Someone I know not well enough to voice my opinion on the subject said something like why didn’t God make potatoes a low-calorie food so I am here to say: God made them like that because their nutrition density IS what makes them healthy. By God I mean Andean agricultural technicians. Potato is healthy BECAUSE potato holds calories and vitamins. Do not malign potato

A New Concept For Low-cost Batteries

A new concept for low-cost batteries

Made from inexpensive, abundant materials, an aluminum-sulfur battery could provide low-cost backup storage for renewable energy sources.

As the world builds out ever larger installations of wind and solar power systems, the need is growing fast for economical, large-scale backup systems to provide power when the sun is down and the air is calm. Today’s lithium-ion batteries are still too expensive for most such applications, and other options such as pumped hydro require specific topography that’s not always available.

Now, researchers at MIT and elsewhere have developed a new kind of battery, made entirely from abundant and inexpensive materials, that could help to fill that gap.

The new battery architecture, which uses aluminum and sulfur as its two electrode materials, with a molten salt electrolyte in between, is described today in the journal Nature, in a paper by MIT Professor Donald Sadoway, along with 15 others at MIT and in China, Canada, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

ā€œI wanted to invent something that was better, much better, than lithium-ion batteries for small-scale stationary storage, and ultimately for automotive [uses],ā€ explains Sadoway, who is the John F. Elliott Professor Emeritus of Materials Chemistry.

What Is A Semiconductor? An Electrical Engineer Explains How These Critical Electronic Components Are

What is a semiconductor? An electrical engineer explains how these critical electronic components are made

Semiconductors are a critical part of almost every modern electronic device, and the vast majority of semiconductors are made in Tawain. Increasing concerns over the reliance on Taiwain for semiconductors—especially given the tenuous relationship between Taiwan and China—led the U.S. Congress to pass the CHIPS and Science act in late July 2022. The act provides more than US$50 billion in subsidies to boost U.S. semiconductor production and has been widely covered in the news. Trevor Thornton, an electrical engineer who studies semiconductors, explains what these devices are and how they are made.

1. What is a semiconductor?

Generally speaking, the term semiconductor refers to a material—like silicon—that can conduct electricity much better than an insulator such as glass, but not as well as metals like copper or aluminum. But when people are talking about semiconductors today, they are usually referring to semiconductor chips.

Here’s another one from my archives. It’s the town under a rock,Ā Setenil de las Bodegas, Spain, where around 3,000 inhabitants are living quite literally, under a rock.

Here’s Another One From My Archives. It’s The Town Under A Rock,Ā Setenil De Las Bodegas, Spain,

The small white washed town has a unique setting along a narrow river gorge eroded by the Rio Trejo river, with many of the houses being built into and under the walls of the gorge itself.

Here’s Another One From My Archives. It’s The Town Under A Rock,Ā Setenil De Las Bodegas, Spain,

There was a practical reason for living here.Ā  The natural caves are ideal living quarters because they didn’t need to build whole houses to keep out the heat and cold- the cave did that. All they had to build were the faƧades.Ā

The bars, restaurants and food shops are ranked as the best in the region.

The town used to be used to be large store rooms for local produce, b/c of the cool environment in the rock.Ā

Even though a lot of the town is under the rock, a lot of it still gets the sun. It’s like going in and out of tunnels.

So apparently i had to find out by accident today that stickbug eggs look like tiny pots and they hatch out by opening the lids and crawling out

a picture of a Stick insect next to an open stick insect egg, which resembles an open pot or basket with a perfectly round hole in the top, the circular "lid" laying next to it [END ID]
an image of a variety of stick insect eggs arranged side by side. there are 26 eggs shown in total many of which resemble abstract pottery with lids, some of which even have little knobs on top that look like lid handles. they seem to somewhat resemble seeds as well of varying different textures and patterns [END ID]
