Cultural feminism is arguably the worst strand of feminism, but unfortunately it's everywhere.

In Whipping Girl, I describe it as being
invested in oppositional sexism but flipping traditional sexism, such that women are now deemed inherently "good" and "pure," and men inherently "oppressive" and "dangerous."

Cultural feminism forms the backbone of "gender critical"/TERF ideology, but it also informs mainstream feminism, for instance, in the idea that there would be no violence or other societal ills if female politicians ran the government, or if every company had a female CEO, and so on. It's extremely anti-intersectional. And it's obviously bullshit, as many women commit acts of violence and act oppressively toward other marginalize groups.

But it's popular because it's simple and it paints cis women as victims who are entirely free of any culpability.

- Julia Serano

This is so important for every trans person & ally to learn. I remember when I first made this blog, I accidentally reblogged a TERF post every once in a while and didn't realize it at all until ppl started making me aware. In hindsight, the issue wasn't that I wasn't well-informed about terf dogwhistles or that I didn't have enough of them blocked, although that was a big part of it, it was because I wasn't taking all forms of sexism equally seriously. If you on some level believe that women are purer & safer & better people than men, that male sexuality is scary & predatory or that one can be "tainted" by masculinity, you're going to be an easier target for TERFs.

It's so important that we as trans & queer people approach this "cultural feminism" as Serano calls it with zero tolerance. Only that way we can keep our spaces safe & welcoming for everyone & give TERFs no chance.

The only way out of this, as far as I can see, is for us as a trans community to explicitly (and loudly) reject cultural feminism—both its essentialism and its zero-sum conceptualization of gender-based oppression. If we did this, then we could all openly discuss our experiences with oppositional and traditional sexism (and the intersection thereof) without other trans people presuming that we’re implying that they have not been impacted by these forces—or worse, that they must be one of our “oppressors.”

I love visiting people who have some kind of pet reptile because they're always like "would you like to hold the reptile" and I'm like "of course I would" and then the rest of the conversation happens with me just holding a random reptile and the reptile Has No Feelings about the situation. They always just sit there, probably vaguely wishing to return to their heat lamp but clearly exuding an energy of This Might As Well Happen. and then I put it back in its enclosure and go home and the reptile very clearly has no strong feelings about the situation.

you can always tell how little people actually care about art based on how much they hate modern/contemporary art

Kind of a hot take but i dont think we can solve the issue of marginalized people being treated like children without asking ourselves why we treat children like subhuman objects incapable of thinking and undeserving of autonomy

had a minor crisis when 12ft.io went down yesterday and thankfully it's back now but this seems like a good opportunity to compile a list of similar paywall-evading tools in case 12ft ever gets canned for real:

12ft.io: the legend himself. definitely my favorite of the bunch by virtue of being the easiest to use (and the easiest url to remember), but it's configured to disable paywall evasion for a handful of popular sites like the new york times, so you'll have to go elsewhere for those.

printfriendly: works great; never had any issues with removing paywalls, even on domains that don't work with 12ft.io. since this site is literally designed to make sites print-friendly, it might simplify the overall formatting of the page you're trying to access, which can be a good or bad thing. my only real issue is that the "element zapper" (which lets you remove content blocks from the print-friendly preview) is a little sensitive if you're browsing on a touchscreen device, which means you might accidentally delete a paragraph when you're just trying to scroll. but if that happens you can reload the page and it'll revert everything back to its original state.

fifteen feet: basically a 12ft clone, minus 12ft's restrictions. haven't used it much since I only discovered it yesterday in the wake of 12ft's 451 error but it seems to do the trick.

archive.today: an archival tool very similar to the wayback machine, but it also works as a de facto paywall removal tool. (the wayback machine seems to remove paywalls as well, but archive.today has better UX imo and is way faster to use.)

and an honorable mention for sci-hub: only works for scientific/academic journals, not random news articles, but the other sites listed above only work for random news articles and not academic publications so you gotta have this one in your toolbelt for full coverage. pubmed is your oyster.
