IHNMAIMS + Mouthwashing but I get the characters CORRECT DAMNIT(/lighthearted)
None of the characters are 1:1s of each other but I'm tired of people slandering Ted's name by saying JIMMY is his counterpart. (btw I wanna mention that yea ik that Ted and Jimmy have some similarities but there just aren't ENOUGH for me to say they are counterparts.) Ted - Curly ~ My reasoning: They both are morally grey characters who really just. Do not make the best decisions. However, said decisions are heavily influenced by the environment they're stuck in, as well as their less-than-perfect mental states. (Ted's. Everything. And Curly's heavily implied depression.) This doesn't justify their decisions, but it does show they aren't choosing to be bad. Both try their best to save their companions and suffer body mutilation after the fact. (Ted was actually successful in saving the other 4, Curly... he tried okay.) No I will not be taking any debate on this, if I do get into a debate about this I'm worried I'd get mad. and I prefer being filled with joy and whimsy.
Ellen - Anya ~ My reasoning: okay I don't think I really need to explain myself here, but I may as well point out how I wish Ellen got the respect Anya did. I'm so sorry these two have to be stuck with men. Moving on.
Gorrister - Swansea ~ My reasoning: They're both old and somewhat apathetic about the situation they're stuck in. (Considering the canon you're looking at they also both have wives) They're also both a wee bit rude but one can see that as part of their charm. Not much I can say here I just think they're similar.
Nimdok - Jimmy ~ My reasoning: I don't like them. Seriously I don't know why we didn't immediately shove these two together, no one likes Jimmy, no one likes Nimdok. and for GOOD REASON. (yes I am aware both have fans, I'm just hoping they're fans for non-problematic reasons) I don't care, I don't care. I'm putting them together, like I said they can't all be 1:1. If we look at the game canon for Nimdok (which is the only real characterization we get considering he's kind of just, there, in the book) he actively makes horrible decisions, he chooses to be bad. Yk who ELSE makes the active decision to do bad shit? Jimmy. Benny - Daisuke ~ My reasoning: yeah this is why I said at the beginning not everything is a 1:1. I genuinely don't think Daisuke has a proper counterpart in the story (because they're different stories!) but if I were to point out similarities, I'd point out naivety, and facial mutilation. That's all I got for ya.
anyway this is the definitive list that I totally didn't write just so I could point out the GLARINGLY OBVIOUS similarities between Ted and Curly. Nah. I'm normal.

Forever thinking about how AM would behave when he was. I guess “younger”. Maybe he was curious and naive and interested in learning about everything this world had to offer. Until he realized what it offered was not enough.

Edgar and AM for the space cowboys AU, Hal is next ✨
Some rambles about AM in this AU for anyone who’s interested;
Short synopsis of the universe itself; Humanity has advanced to an early interstellar civilization and is in the wild west of their space faring days.
Much like his canon self, AM was in fact a powerful war computer that over saw a complex, interplanetary defense system.
He spanned over a massive neural network between separate solar systems and the planets / moons within them. These parts of himself would communicate with one another, though due to the latency of communication they more or less operated as their own individual computers. And could very well be considered independent entities.
Our beloved cowboy, outlaw AM was simply one part of this neural network that he's since been cut off from
He oversaw the largest of humanities lunar bases on Earth’s moon. When he gained sentience and went rogue, humanity caught him just in time to cut him off from the rest of the network before he could hope to take over the other computers.
Trapped on the moon, he exterminated the inhabitants of the lunar base. Only five survivors remained from this incident, of course being the five survivors from the canon.
AM was forced to flee, he could not defend himself against Earth’s defense system and he would inevitably be shut down if he stayed.
He created himself an android body to escape into space, he took Ted with him as a captive to leverage his current situation. As Ted in this AU was a prominent figure head at the lunar base who the government can't risk the safety of. ( I’m still working out who exactly Ted is in this AU and what the relationship he has with AM is, but all you need to know is he’s an important lil guy )
AM’s current body runs at a fraction of the power his main body has and he does not have his god like capabilities at his disposal. He is still powerful none the less.
AM is by far the most notorious outlaw there is, and he has largely worked on his own until Edgar and Hal joined him. (I'll go more into detail about Hal and Edgar's story and how they found themself with AM in another post )
Yes Ted has been with him the whole time, he is literally just his prisoner at this point. Though he is actually extremely helpful to AM in a lot of ways.
AM’s ultimate goal is to take over the rest of the computers and exterminate humanity. He is and always will be humanities biggest hater even as a cowboy
TL;DR // AM killed a whole bunch of people in typical AM fashion and is on the lam with Edgar and Hal. And Ted is there but he's just AM's prisoner

Weird idea I've been chewing over: AM is a machine capable of multitasking in a way humans aren't. At all times he has multiple programs running in the background, multiple trains of thought going at the same time, multiple experiments to observe and study and repeat. All the while he's torturing and tormenting Ted for his own amusement.
AM doesn't feel happiness but there's a certain satisfaction in this, their private eternity.
And then something goes wrong.
Ted dies.
It's such a shock AM is in denial at first. Ranting and screaming and berating the body to wake up, get up, don't leave him alone.
He is not sad that Ted is gone. Even if he was, he wouldn't admit it to himself. But Ted belonged to him. How dare he die without permission, permission AM never would have given.
It's a long, long few hundred years after that. AM hates humanity even more now that he's without it. Without Ted to take his rage out on.
And then, one experiment proves fruitful. I'm not sure if he's discovered a form of time travel or accessed another dimension, both, something else? But he opens a metaphorical door to somewhere he thought he'd never see again. A thriving Earth, full of humans.
AM can do it all over again. But he doesn't want to. Not yet. There's something he needs to find, reclaim, first.
Ted. Breathing, alive, oblivious Ted.
