A serious alternative to the dollar is still a long way off, but the latest shenanigans on Capitol Hill have given the search for them renewed momentum
All great empires – from the Greek, to the Roman, the Spanish and the British - have at their heart a dominant means of exchange which is very much part of their political and social hegemony. Once upon a time, it was Roman coinage which was the world’s pre-eminent currency. In more recent times it was the British pound. Today, it’s the US dollar to which international investors flock as a safe haven for their money. Highly liquid and apparently reliable – until recently at least – nothing else comes even remotely close to the greenback’s dominant position in the international monetary system.

Renault on Tuesday launched the second phase of its giant low-cost car factory in Morocco, whose opening last year sparked anger in France, amid opposition to the so-called “delocalisation” of manufacturing.
The second stream at the plant outside Tangiers, which will produce the Dacia Sandero model, will allow the French carmaker to double output at what it says is the biggest factory of its kind in Africa. Production is due to reach 340,000 vehicles in 2014.

Now that the long overdue (and predicted) contagion from the cash market has hit repo, things are going from bad to horrifying. Following overnight news that HK is hiking haircuts on Bill collateral, and with increasingly more counterparties now segregating what collateral is eligible, if not shutting down the bill market outright, suddenly the universe of eligible repo market securities has imploded. It also means the overnight repo rate, as we said on Monday would happen, is exploding. Moments ago ICAP reported, via SMRA, that the general collateral overnight rate has nearly doubled from 0.15% to 0.27% and rising.

We talked about Lazard (not to be confused with Lazard Capital Markets) a couple weeks ago after they released a Levelized Cost of Energy Analysis. If you did not read that article Lazard is a global financial advisory firm founded in 1848. They operate all over the world and specializes in giving advice on mergers and acquisitions, strategic matter as well as restructuring and capital structure. Goldman Sachs on Monday upgraded Lazard to "Conviction Buy" from "Neutral." They also raised their price target to $45 from the previous $37. In a statement Goldman Sachs analyst Alexander Blostein said, “We believe the Street underestimates LAZ’s margin improvement opportunity in 2014 given strengthening revenue backdrop in both the Advisory and Asset Mgmt. businesses, and cost cut realization... “With modest revenue growth assumptions, we believe LAZ should achieve its 25% operating margin target, leaving us about 10% above consensus for the next two years. Furthermore, in our view, the firm’s significant cash flow generation (13% FCF yield) creates opportunities for corporate debt reduction starting in 2015, as well as dividend growth over time. Longer-term, we believe LAZ provides the most upside potential to an improving global M&A cycle mainly due to its European presence – currently the largest drag on M&A volumes.” For more information on Lazard's successes, the New York Times released an article here

SanDisk Corp (NASDAQ:SNDK) is a leading flash storage technology company that is coming under some selling pressure during today’s trading session. SNDK stock is trading lower by 0.95 cents to $61.34 a share. Day traders should watch for important intra-day support around the $60.45 level. Not a day goes by without a story in the MSM by some industry shill like Daniel Yergen about the imminent energy independence of the Great American Empire. Shale oil and gas will revolutionize the American energy prospects. We have hundreds of years of oil and gas under our feet. We will be a net exporter in the next few years. A glorious future awaits. Politicians tout the billions of barrels to be extracted from Bakken, Eagle Ford and the hundreds of untapped shale formations across the country. Wall Street puts out glowing investment analysis papers promoting the latest IPO. There’s just one little problem. It’s all hype.

With everyone’s attention turning to the debt ceiling X-Date of October 17 (or sooner now that the Pentagon is once again spending money like a drunken sailor following the recall of 400,000 workers or half of the total number fuloughed), some are wondering why is the stock market not reacting more violently. The generic response that has formed is that despite all the feamongering by Obama and the Treasury, even crossing the X-Date will hardly result in the apocalyptic outcome that so many predict as the Treasury can “prioritze payments”, i.e., paying some bills and not others, which as we explained before, means paying down debt obligations first, and everything else - whose non-payment does not constitute an event of default under US debt - last. In other words, if the US were to merely live within its means, it should have no problem remaining current on its interest expense even if that means slashing most other government programs.

Stock markets are now trading at new all time highs. Last week, the Federal Reserve announced that they would not cut their current $85 billion a month QE-3 program. In other words, the central bank to the United States wants to keep interest rates extremely low in order to boost the U.S. economy. They also continue to buy mortgage backed securities and U.S. treasuries to keep the recent housing boom intact. Some members of the Federal Reserve such as Richard Fisher have strongly opposed the action by the Federal Reserve, but that does not seem to change the fact that the central bank’s balance sheet is now around $4 trillion. That is a lot of money printing over the past five years and it is still growing. Next, there is the United States debt ceiling debate between President Obama and the U.S. Congress that is heating up. The U.S. debt has climbed to $16.95 trillion. Many individuals will blame President Obama for the large increase in debt, but in all fairness every U.S. president has raised the debt ceiling. The only thing that could bring down the current U.S. debt would be economic growth, but unfortunately when a country grows at 2.0 percent a year it is very difficult to bring down the U.S. debt in a meaningful way. The number of people in the United States receiving benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly known as food stamps) is now just over 47 million. Then there is the money spent on wars and other conflicts, some experts say that the Iraq war cost over $3 trillion alone. Is all of this spending by the United States government ever going to stop? How can a country in so much debt continue to spend money it does not have? At this time, that does not seem to matter. The stock markets remains at or near all time highs. The markets do not seem to be worried about the weak U.S. economy, the debt, the people on public assistance, or the wars. When the stock market starts to panic that will be the time to worry that the problems are becoming to big too handle. Remember, the warning signs that told us that the housing and credit bubble was about to burst started to show up late 2005 when the housing stocks topped out, but the Dow Jones Industrial Average did not top out until October 2007. At that time, the central bankers were telling us that there were no problems on the horizon, but we all know now that the great recession was already underway despite the calming words from Ben Bernanke and the central bankers. Right now we are looking at the great disconnect, but everyone should just trade until the market tells us otherwise.

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) is having a fantastic day. The stock hit a new all time high of $49.66. However, the charts tell the future and the future is not green for Facebook. Instead, it is cluttered with down days and a pull back to the $45.65 and $42.45 levels. So why when the world is so bullish on Facebook is the top in? The answer is somewhat simple. First, with the world so bullish on Facebook or on any stock, one must be wary as a reversal is likely. A great example of this was Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL). When the stock was at $700 a share, analysts were upgrading like crazy and the whole world was talking about it. This has now happened with Facebook. Today, happens to coincide with an analyst upgrade as well. Go figure, an analyst upgrades the stock now when it is up 100% in the last few months. Definitely similar to Apple at $700 per share. When looking at the stock chart of Facebook, the first thing that jumps out to me is the symmetry. The price hovered around $25.00 a share for a long period. After earnings it shot up to a high of $49.66. This is a 100% move in the stock. In addition, notice the selling that has come in off the highs today. Major distribution from institutions. Last, notice the tail on the chart today. As the stock declines, it forms what could be a topping tail on the daily chart. Should a topping tail form, it will solidify a major top in the stock for a pull back to the mentioned levels of $45.65 and $42.45. Normally, I do not mention valuation but even that is way beyond stretched. The bottom line sits at an overbought Facebook chart that has too many amateur bulls long and reversal signals everywhere. Cheers to a great shorting opportunity. Gareth Soloway InTheMoneyStocks.com
