Today the Department of Phenomenal Papercraft explores the work of Istanbul-based paper artist Nermin Er, who creates layered, backlit dioramas with a wonderful and sometimes whimsical narrative feel. Er also works with animation, which may explain why so many of her pieces feel like glimpses of a bigger story just waiting to be put into motion. Her delicate circular designs depicting cityscapes and dreamy forest scenes remind us of the work of Hari & Deepti (previously featured here).

Epigenomics Starts To Make Its Mark

Epigenomics starts to make its mark

Analysis of chemical patterns on DNA shows promise for explaining disease, but few results have yet been replicated.

Obesity may be written not only in the genes, but also on top of them. One of the largest studies so far to probe the human epigenome — the collective name for the patterns of chemical groups that adorn DNA sequences and influence their activity — has found some tags that are linked to differences in body mass index (BMI).

The Midnight Planétarium by Van Cleef & Arpels

The movement of each planet is true to its genuine length of orbit: it will take Saturn over 29 years to make a complete circuit of the dial, Jupiter will take almost 12 years, Mars 687 days, Earth 365 days, Venus 224 days and Mercury 88 days.

May 1, 1851, was the most exciting day in London, ever. It marked the launch of the “Great Exhibition” in the brand-new Crystal Palace—13,000 exhibits under one glass roof.

From May to October, six million visitors attended this head-spinning mega-show of technological and design wares from around the world, all housed in a massive hall created from the shockingly modern material of glass. Queen Victoria presided over the opening with Prince Albert, writing in her diary that it was “one of the greatest and most glorious days of our lives.”
