Hey!! To Celebrate My Birthday Month And Autumn In General, I Thought It Would Be Nice To Post A Challenge!

hey!! to celebrate my birthday month and autumn in general, i thought it would be nice to post a challenge! i always wanted to do my own one. anyone can join, you don’t have to do every day and it’s okay to switch days if the challenge is inconvenient that day. don’t forget to use #nostalgicautumn so i can find your posts. I would appreciate a reblog so as many people as possible can join! so here it is:

let’s get it! set some goals: what do you hope to achieve this october? include some autumn activities.

create an autumn playlist to keep u company this month! (on spotify and post the link, or just write down the songs on here)

what’s your favorite drink for autumn and why? post a recipe if it’s something fancy.

light a candle for today’s study session & post a pic.

write a short love letter to yourself and put it into your jacket pocket to be your lucky charm. if it’s not too personal, post it on here to. otherwise just recap how it was writing to yourself: was it easy or did you struggle a bit?

how do you say “autumn” in your native language / the language you’re learning? plus points if you google the origin.

read this poem. what did you think of it?

give your notes / your bujo some autumn vibes: doodles, autumn colors, … be creative & post a pic.

what’s your favorite quote?

fav study snack this autumn?

today’s to-do: reading! get yourself cozy and enjoy your book.

are you affected by bad weather? what do you do to make yourself feel better?

what’s your morning routine? is there’re something you could do to make it more enjoyable?

night routine?

record yourself explaining your study material and take a walk outside. did this method work for you / will you try it again?

my hands always get super dry when it gets cold outside. so today’s task is easy: use some handcream! any recs?

watch a documentary or a short educational video on youtube. it can be about anything! some ideas: environment, space, crime, famous people (buzzfeed unsolved counts too ;))

what’s your favorite thing about autumn?

stretch when taking a study break today. what stretches did you do? how did it feel?

do you get nervous for exams? what do you do to deal with nervousness?

post a pic of your study space.

collect some leaves, get some fresh air and take some pics. don’t forget to press the leaves!

document your day with some pics. what are you most proud of for getting done today?

describe your ideal autumn day.

how do you study?

get something done today you have been procrastinating on for weeks. it doesn’t have to be study-related and it’s okay if you only spend 5 mins on it! something is always better than nothing.

have you ever had any magical or paranormal experiences?

time to journal! make yourself some tea and let your thoughts out.

give someone a compliment today. what was it?

what was this month’s biggest accomplishment?

time to take a break & enjoy halloween! what are your plans?

difference between a report & a research paper

sources used: my history teacher & “Tips for Writing Analytic Research Papers.” (1998): n. pag. Harvard Kennedy School Shorenstein Center, 19 May 2009. Web. 29 May 2015.

• report

- organized regurgitation of facts gathered from research

- thesis statement is a general statement summarizing what your whole report is about

- thesis statement is NOT opinion or argument to be proven

- topic sentences of body paragraphs summarize what facts you’ll describe in that paragraph

- research + writing facts = report

• research paper

- organized analysis of facts gathered from research

- thesis statement identifies the overall argument or academic opinion that you will prove in your paper

- thesis statement must be (academic) opinion and argumentation

- research + writing facts + analysis = research paper

• so what is analysis? how do i do it?

analysis is basically breaking apart the facts you have found in your research and demonstrating critical thinking about those facts. make your analysis explicit - your reader should not have to infer or guess what your analysis is. it looks like:

• dissecting or breaking down larger events or concepts to explore the smaller parts [“dr. king’s plan comprised of three specific political and social actions” - then the author explains the parts]

• cause/effect [author describes situation that outrages dr. king - “this outrage motivated dr. king to deliver his speech”]

• identification or explanation of significance [“this speech is iconic in american history because…”]

• comparison of ideas from different sources, or differing opinions; examination of counterarguments [“critics of dr. king said…” “historians disagree…” “others have said…”]

• connection to broader ideas and themes in the relevant discipline [“king’s actions exemplify the overall trend in social activism towards nonviolent action to achieve change”]

• connection to experiences, examples in other geographic areas, time periods or disciplines [“this behavior is explained by psychologists as…” “the american civil rights movement was inspired by actions in…” “another leader who inspired people in similar ways was nelson mandela in south africa”]

TIPS FOR A PRODUCTIVE STUDY DAY:

Find a good place to study: somewhere light, quiet, busy, spacious, cosy, alone, with friends …whatever works for you. Take time to learn what kind of environment you work best in. Try and put your technology aside. If you’re always on your phone, turn it off and put it in your bag, if you’re finding the internet distracting, download “Pomodoro” (an app which blocks sites like facebook, twitter etc for a set period of time).

Figure out when you’re most productive: if it’s in the morning, get up earlier and spend a few hours solidly working, if it’s in evening, make sure you set some time aside to focus. For me, I work best between 8am-1pm, then I normally take a few hours off, and if I have a lot to do I’ll head back to the library between 4-8pm. Finding the time when your mind is at its most alert can have a huge impact on your studies and will mean you avoid spending hours being unproductive.

Decide what you’re going to do before you start: if you have lots of different things to do, decide which one you’re going to focus on before you sit down. This will prevent you from panicking and trying to do everything at once, which will only make you feel stressed and unproductive.

Set realistic goals: don’t try and be overambitious with what you want to achieve that day. If you set yourself unrealistic goals, you’ll only finish the day feeling like you’ve failed. Set yourself a number of small, manageable tasks to work through, then if you are able to do more it will make you feel a lot more productive.

Start with the hard stuff: tackle the big problems first. Things will feel easier in the first few hours of studying when your mind is most awake, so it’s important to start with the trickier things first. This way, when you hit a wall you can work through a few of the smaller, easier tasks and still feel like you’re getting stuff done.

Remember to keep refuelling: get plenty of sleep, drink lots of water, bring snacks, treat yourself to a nice lunch, take frequent breaks, walk around and go outside if you can. If you are planning to spend a long time studying it’s important to keep your energy levels up.

Plan something for the end of the day: even if it’s just going to the gym, making a nice meal, or going for a drink with your friends, give yourself something to look forward to at the end of a long day studying.

Remember why you’re doing this: is it to get into university or just because you’re passionate about your subject? By linking something difficult to something you care about, it makes it easier to stay focused and keep going.

Not every day can be productive: if things aren’t happening that day keep trying for a while and if you’re still feeling stuck do something else. There’s no point sitting at your desk for hours when you’re just not able to get things done. Go and do something you enjoy and try and get out of the house, and just try again tomorrow. A few days off here and there is not going to ruin your degree, and taking time to do something for yourself is likely to make you more productive in the long run.

University Tips:

Keep a calendar and stay on top of your schedule!

Make a timetable of your classes/seminars

Check emails often

Don’t skip lectures!

Sit in the front row. This will make you focus and help your lecturers remember you - which is actually more important than people think

Build a good relationship with your lecturers AND peers

Visit your professors’ office hours regularly and have catch ups

Go to the library to study! You’ll be more distracted trying to study at home/in your room. If you have to study in your room- turn your phone off

It’s okay to not want to party like everyone else :)

Write down your notes in lectures and type them up after

Join a society/club! This will make sure you have a great work-social life balance, and give you the opportunity to learn something new at least once a week

Colour code notes

It’s just as important not to overwork yourself as it is not to procrastinate (too much)

Keep your desk clean and organised!

Try to get a good night’s sleep the night before lectures and have a good breakfast in the morning. You will be more focused for it

Keep a journal of your experiences and ambitions

Go to counseling services. UK Universities will have counselling services that can tackle anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. Your well-being is as important as your grades

Your degree doesn’t define you. You still have time to explore your options. You don’t have to know what you want to be right now. University is about developing yourself as it is finding a career.

Don’t burn bridges with your friends/loved ones at home. They will be there for you should you need to go home

Live on or near campus. This will save money and give you a sense of belonging

Eat well!

College Chats: Staying True to Yourself

If you’re going to college or university in the fall, you might be thinking this is your chance to reinvent yourself. However, I found during that time I learned to understand myself and be comfortable with who I am! You will go through changes and grow, but more importantly you’ll figure out who you honestly are at the core!

College Chats: Staying True To Yourself

The first week is an ice cream swirl of emotions, you’ll have the joy of adult freedom and you’ll be overwhelmed by adult responsibilities. You’ll also be meeting a lot of new people during orientation week and figuring out where you belong. The best advice for that week: be friendly but cautious of who you trust. Whether it’s a relationship or friendship, a person needs to earn your respect before you disclose intimate information. Especially during frosh week, everyone can seem like your new best friend. However, after the high of that week goes away, you’ll get to know who makes a good friend and who’s only good for a party.

College Chats: Staying True To Yourself

Another reason to be honest about yourself, people easily can tell when someone’s being fake. For example, you might think being cynical and sarcastic all the time will make people think you’re cool. But if that’s not you, most will not respond to a persona you put on. Those that do, are probably not genuine people themselves. You’ve got to discover what feels natural to your personality and not force yourself to be a completely different person.

College Chats: Staying True To Yourself

Another way to stay true to yourself  is if the decisions you’re making are for you! If you’re scared of losing friends or a relationship by not always doing what others want you to, you need to let go of those people! Your happiness can only be fulfilled by you and should never depend on those around you!

College Chats: Staying True To Yourself

Being honest about yourself, also means recognizing when you do need to make improvements! No matter the personal issue, you need to create small steps you can commit to in order to make a big change! Don’t be afraid to ask for help and those that care about you will support you wanting to grow!

College Chats: Staying True To Yourself

Speaking of support, an easy way to tell if a relationship is good for you is how the other person makes you feel about yourself. If a friend or significant other encourages you to want to be better and still like yourself at the same time, it’s a healthy relationship! We all deserve to relax and take a break once in awhile, but you don’t want to surround yourself with people that don’t encourage you to achieve your goals!

College Chats: Staying True To Yourself

I hope this gives you some refreshed perspective on yourself and please check out the blogs I used gifs from! :)

Hey Rising College Seniors (or Anyone Needing To Write A Thesis-length Work)! Last Year, I Tackled Not

Hey rising college seniors (or anyone needing to write a thesis-length work)! Last year, I tackled not one but TWO theses, one of which was honors-length and over 100 pages long. One was for Art History and the other for International Studies, so if you come from a discipline from outside of the humanities, it might look a little different for you. Here is my advice for making your thesis a little bit less scary to navigate.

1) Focus on a topic before developing an argument.

I don’t know about y’all, but whenever I write a research paper, my argument drastically changes from the conception of the paper to its final draft. It’s not necessary to have your argument nailed down right away. My Art History thesis loosely started at “20th century art and politics” in September, but by November it had gone through 2 or 3 different iterations before becoming “everyone forgets that Jackson Pollock was a communist”. Often choosing your argument before doing your research boxes you into a place from which it is difficult to grow.

2) Try to avoid falling into a research hole.

I’m a jSTOR hoe. I love clicking through library search results and scholarly articles and collecting anything that seems relevant to my topic. This always leads me into hours of sifting through articles that are ultimately unhelpful and a waste of time and brain energy. Start with four or five sources. Read, analyze, regroup. Take notes, and when you are done with those sources, move on to more relevant information. Don’t forget to look up the citations of your most relevant sources. This is a treasure trove!

3) If you need to collect data, do it early.

Nothing is worse than being unable to move forward with your research analysis because you still have to collect more data. If you need to conduct interviews or produce survey data, make sure that you prioritize the research required to generate these things and get them approved and out early. I couldn’t analyze my results until a month before my IS thesis was due, and it made my last month of college rather hellish.

4) Have an accountability partner.

Try to find any friends or classmates who are also thesis-ing and band together. Host library write-ins or start a group chat if you prefer to work alone. You can also turn your thesis into a social activity! My friends and I would spend our Friday nights drinking and talking through our arguments and exchanging feedback in a casual social setting. That might not be what it looks like for you, but regardless of what you do, it’s great to have someone who will hold you accountable and work alongside you.

5) Format your citations and works cited right away.

While it is super tempting to footnote sentences with links to articles while writing, leaving all of your citations for the very end makes life harder. Format your citations frequently to give yourself a mental “break” and keep them in a separate word doc.

6) I don’t know if this actually needs to be said, but keep all of your work backed up.

For the love of all things that are good do not leave your work saved exclusively do a desktop. I like to use Google Drive to manage all things (I even upload journal articles so that I can organize them in folders and access them anywhere from any device), especially because it autosaves constantly. Use whichever platform works best for you, but please, please, please back up your work to some sort of cloud.

Hopefully some of these are a helpful place to get started. Good luck!

Random Studying 101

Remove all distractions. When I was in 9th-10th grade, I let my sister hide my phone and I also said to her that don’t give it to me until the specific time. Now, I hide it in my cabinet or under my pillow. Hide it so that it will be gone in your sight.

Music. Don’t play music that is distracting and with lyrics. Make sure they make you concentrate and focus on the task. (Use earphones or headphones!)

Motivate yourself. Sometimes, no one will motivate you so you have to motivate yourself. Find quotes, videos and things that will motivate you enough to study.

Study beverage. This is really important to me. I always study while drinking something. Tea, hot chocolate or coffee. I don’t know but they help me focus.

Study in places with natural light.

If you can’t focus in your room, study in the library. Sometimes, my siblings are noisy and I can’t really understand my lessons anymore, I will go to school early. ( I have afternoon class.) So, I will go to school two hours before class.

Don’t wait until the day before or cram because you will not remember anything. When you cram, your brain can’t encode the information to your long-term memory. Because of that, you will not remember anything in the morning.

If you believe that you can’t keep up in the lesson, make sure that before the lesson you advance study. I always do this especially in math because I need tons of practice before I get it.

Organize your time and follow it. Don’t just make a time plan, you need to implement it in your day.

Sentence Practice - July '19

Welcome back, everyone! It’s been a busy week and just yesterday I had my first ever Korean Food in a restaurant and I fell into a food coma instead of writing this post. So I’m a tad late, but here we are!

We spoke about a lot of things so far and last was the tenses with speech levels, so today instead of adding to the pile of overwhelming knowledge I’ll be doing some practice sentences. As always I may make mistakes but that is okay. We are here to learn not only a language but also to realize that it is okay to make mistakes and that they are needed to learn! So are you ready?

Good. Let’s go! 가자!

1. Yesterday I went to a Korean Restaurant.

Yesterday - 어제

to go - 가다 - Past tense 가았어요 -> 갔어요

Korean 한국

Restaurant 음식점

-> 어제 저는 한국 음식점에 갔어요

2. In August I will visit my parents. (In August I will go to my parents)

August - 팔월

to go - 가다 (I use to go instead of literal ‘visit’ here) - Future tense 가겠어요

My - 우리 / 저의 (제)

Parents - 부모님

-> 저는 팔월에 제 부모님에 가겠어요

3. The weather is cold today.

Today - 오늘

Weather - 날씨

Cold - 추워

-> 오늘 날씨가 추워요

4. I like the flowers in front of our house.

Flowers - 꽃

House - 집

Our - 우리

In front - 앞

To like - 좋아하다

-> 저는 꽃을 우리 집 앞에 좋아해요

5. We live in this apartment.

We - 우리

To live - 살다 - Present tense 살아요

This - 이

Apartment - 아파트

-> 우리는 이 아파트에 살아요

6. My big sister went to physical therapy.

My - 우리 / 저의 (제)

Big sister (from girl’s view) - 언니

To go - 가다  - Past tense 가았어요 (merges into 갔어요)

Physical therapy - 물리 치료

-> 제 언니는 물리 치료에 갔어요

7. We will go to the hospital tomorrow.

We - 우리

to go - 가다 - Future tense 가겠어요

Hospital - 병원

Tomorrow - 내일

-> 내일 우리는 병원에 가겠어요

That’s it for now. If you found any mistakes, please let me know - how else would I learn, right?

Also if you have any requests outside of the grammar posts that I am doing please let me know. I’d like to know what’s useful and what is not. I might to some small themed posts here and there with vocabularies and such, just to give our brains time to process the grammar with some vocabulary and sentences. Let me know if you think that would be useful!

I don’t know what the next post will be about yet, but it’ll come soon! Until then, stay awesome!

파이팅!

a fools guide to not wanting to die anymore

by me, a fool who doesnt wanna die anymore

never make a suicide joke again. yes this includes “i wanna die” as a figure of speech. swear off of it. actually make an effort to change how you think about things.

find something to compliment someone for at least 4 times a day. notice the little things about the world that make you happy, and use that to make other people happy.

talk to people. initiate conversation as often as you possibly can. keep your mind busy and you wont have to worry anymore

picture the bad intrusive thoughts in youe head as an edgy 13 year old and tell them to go be emo somewhere else

if someone makes you feel bad most of the time, stop talking to them. making yourself hang out with people who drain you is self harm. stop it.

Writing An Essay In College Is Very Different From Writing An Essay In High School. Personally, I Write

writing an essay in college is very different from writing an essay in high school. personally, i write more research/history papers than literary essays (the liberal arts life and curse), so this is going to be a post on how a general research-y essay that has a thesis and arguments.

intro

don’t open with a quote and don’t be overly broad.

avoid generalizations

your intro should address the topic of your essay (ex. the significance of gardens in renaissance society), and then narrow down to what you want to talk about in regards to your topic (ex. the political influence of the Medici gardens during the renaissance)

thesis! it should include the argument you want to make about the narrowed down topic, and three (or however many your class requires) reasons to support it. I like to think of it as W = X + Y + Z.

your thesis explains who, what and why in a concise manner.

body

topic sentences should not be a word for word copy of your thesis.

the order of arguments in your thesis is the order of your paragraphs

depending on the length of your essay, there should be at least two justifications to your argument.

so, just as the intro has a formula, X = A + B, and so forth.

A and B should be backed up with some sources/quotes. don’t forget that if you are quoting from class notes to put either the prof’s last name, or (class notes)

be sure to have clear and concise arguments, don’t be flowery

USE WORDS THAT ARE ACCURATE. thesaurus is great but if you use a word that sounds cool but doesn’t capture the meaning you want to convey then don’t use it, because it may just change the meaning of your argument

quote whatever isn’t yours. it is completely fine if 90% of your sentences are quotes. its weird to get used to, but don’t worry about it.

conclusion

the worst part in my opinion.

synthesize don’t summarize. show how your arguments relate back to the thesis.

try not to copy paste your thesis into the conclusion, word it so that the readers understands that through XYZ, you were able to conclude and support argument W (referring back to the thesis formula)

do not add any new information, do not add quotes.

your final sentence should tie up the essay in a pretty bow, but try to avoid clichés

protips

when writing the body paragraphs, your ‘weakest’ paragraph should be in the middle, strongest as your last, and the second best as your first.

if you’re stumped on the intro, skip it. write out the body first, then the intro and you’ll be able to concisely word your thesis

think of your essay as an infomercial. your intro is the loud and clear HERES MY PRODUCT, the body is blasting information on why the product is so cool, and the conclusion is the final push for the viewer to buy that product. make your teacher want to agree with your thesis!

use a mix of paraphrase and quotes!

don’t forget your works cited lmao (the MLA Handbook is a gr8 tool, also OWL Purdue)

prime time for essay writing is in the morning or at night, but make sure you edit it meticulously

EDIT ON PAPER NOT ON YOUR SCREEN

Here Are 5 Of The Big Things I’ve Learned Over The Past Two Years And Also Recently During Exams! I

here are 5 of the big things i’ve learned over the past two years and also recently during exams! i feel like i’ve come so far as a student in terms of studying, work ethic and self-discipline, so i wanted to share all the important tips i learned and will definitely re-use in the coming years :)

1: the best way to find your preferred study method is through trial and error

if you are given the chance of taking an end of unit/topic test that doesn’t count towards your final grade, use it to test out revision techniques and find out which one is best for you! throughout all of year 10 i tried different things forevery test i had from simply notes to mind maps to flashcards and to summary sheets in the attempt to find the perfect study method for me. doing this early on in your course where smaller tests don’t really matter is the perfect opportunity for taking risks; this is why it’s called trial and error. some techniques won’t work for you, and you might get a bad grade, but that is how you learn! then, when you get exams that really matter, you’ll know exactly what to do to achieve that dream grade. (although, i understand that in some countries every test counts to your final grade- a work around for this would be to give yourself a mock test deadline if you really want to find out which study method suits you best)

2: self-discipline (rather than motivation) takes time and practice

motivation is temporary; self-discipline is long-lasting. there are a million articles on how to boost motivation, but if you want to develop a consistent work ethic it’s really important to have self-discipline. of course, this can be really hard to achieve; but establishing your goals and sticking to them is crucial. start a study schedule with a corresponding self-care routine (this can be anything from skincare to stretching to journaling) as well as some leisure time and try to stick to it! don’t beat yourself up if you find it hard at the beginning; just remind yourself of your goals, be clear on what you want in the future, and start again. over time it’ll get easier to get up, work hard, and eventually achieve your goals 🤓(also try my study tracker if you need help planning/overviewing your week )

3: active recall is crucial!

i’ve watched many people (myself included) put endless hours in studying and come out with lower grades than they were expecting- while it isn’t always the case, what i’ve noticed is that reading the textbook and making notes from it will help you understand the topic and make you feel like you know everything, but when it comes to recalling specific info it doesn’t really work. although there are some people who can just read the textbook and all the detail is easily deposited into their brain (ugh), for most people an active recall technique is needed. if you hate flashcards, don’t worry! there are plenty of different methods like blurting, teaching others, repeating things out loud until you can say it without looking, solving questions/worksheets etcetera. over time, your brain gets better and better at memorizing and learning that hopefully by the time your exams roll around you’ll be able to recall everything you need 😊

4: create study resources as you are going through your course

this is probably slightly obvious, but so many times during this exam season i’ve kicked myself for not making sets of flashcards or mind maps sooner. instead of making these things and taking huge chunks of time doing passive revision, i could be practicing them and memorizing instead! one of the best things to do during your course when you have free time is to sit down, open the specification/syllabus/textbook and make study resources that you’ll be able to confidently use during exam season. ideally, you could make them after finishing each topic/unit in class, with as much specific information that you think is relevant. it is so much faster to condense flashcards, mind maps or summary sheets when exams come around rather than to have to make whole new ones because there wasn’t enough detail/information.

5: if you are given a specification or syllabus, use it!!

my favorite teacher always told us that our specs should be printed out, annotated, highlighted, and worn from so much use; i didn’t really heed his advice until right before exams, but it was probably the best advice i ever received for the sciences. your specification/syllabus literally tells you everything that might be in the exam, so use it! print them out at 85% so that you have enough margin space to scribble; i used a traffic light method where i highlighted things i knew well in green, things that i needed to revise a bit further in orange and stuff that i really don’t understand and needed to study in red. if you’re struggling to grasp the content within your subject or feel like you’ve got gaps in your knowledge, this method literally points out your strengths and weaknesses for you!

rare feelings

being completely immersed into a book as if you’re watching a movie

being able to study for a long time without being distracted

wandering upon a scent that reminds you of a distant memory from your childhood that you haven’t smelled for years and years

the freedom of letting yourself do something badly (like art or learning) and knowing you’re progressing every day

being completely happy despite the bad things because you remember every little good thing and kind person in your life

stargazing in a remote landscape and feeling existentially precious and insignificant at the same time

waking up early enough to see the darkness turn to sunrise

finding someone who is radiant in every way

being consistent with a goal you’ve been working on for the longest time and seeing the finished result

knowing that one chapter of your life has ended and a better one is beginning
