This was presented with a very whimsical tone and I enjoyed it for that but also. it's such a specific side effect that I can't not analyze it
Like, on principle it makes perfect sense. Give an already fast and energetic character who talks to himself all the time a boost to his abilities, and he becomes twice as chatty to compensate.
But his external monologue has never taken the form of a conversation between two people before, and in a show that's all about having alternate versions of the same character, that's worth taking note of. Especially since this started after he was given energy from the Paradox Prism, the thing that presumably made all of those alternate versions to begin with.
(And even more especially since the show already played around with the idea of there being two Sonics only a few episodes ago with the existence of Chaos Sonic)
So, the other oddity regarding this whole thing is how one side is consistently just. uncharacteristically mean and deadpan towards the other?? I showed one example earlier, but there's two more, and that accounts for almost every instance of Sonic talking to himself in this form
Sonic's never really talked to anyone like this before, not even himself. It almost comes across like an emulation of Shadow more than anything else, which is just. so bizarre?? Especially when Shadow's literally right next to him in the last scene, and thus he has no need to substitute his presence.
In fact, he seems to catch himself and stops doing the self-banter thing entirely as soon as Shadow acknowledges him doing it
And he looks surprised when Shadow speaks, too, like he already forgot that other people can hear him. It really comes off like he's in his own little world, and again, this is a show about multiple worlds, so it's pretty fitting.
I'm not letting Shadow's phrasing off the hook, either - "a Sonic," hm? As if there's more than one?
Even Sonic gets confused about how many of him there are, which has quite the loaded implication for how short of a moment it is; something that could describe everything about this form, honestly.
It all gives me this impression that we're not quite done with this concept of there being multiple Sonics, or at least not done with this form being used in general. There's a lot of potential in what they've already set up for it, and I'd love to see it explored further.
Plus, this one frame of Sonic after he first gets it still gives me the impression that there's something... off about it
And I want to know what that something is
Skybound is kind of a hit-or-miss season overall, but I do have to give it props for absolutely ripping into Jay's characterization like this. Like. They actually went there.
A lot of times it's a popular headcanon/fanon for the comic relief to be using their humor to hide their pain, but apparently in Ninjago it's just straight up canon. So do with that information what you will
We have some info about the new chapter! The info comes from @chiharuyo_ on twitter (check them out!) who's been to the exhibition! So apparently it starts off here with the meeting between tenjiku, bd and toman. They talk about fighting
Kakucho and Izana then talk, they say something about Shinichiro being Izana's brother and Mikey. Before it switches to Taiju calling out something to Mitsuya, Mitsuya replies and walks off. It then shows flashbacks of the Shiba siblings, little Hakkai standing up for Yuzuha.
We then get the Koko and Inui talk that's already been translated where Koko asks about Akane and we see the flashback of someone saving Inui while Koko saves Akane.
It then moves on to Baji, Kazutora and Chifuyu talking which has also already been translated where Chifuyu says he's going to fight by Baji's side, Kazutora gets jealous ajd asks if Chifuyu was a founder of toman too, then shows him the founders pic.
Then Takemichi and Kisaki talk, there's a flashback of them as kids where they're both beaten up on the ground.
According to google translate that text in the middle says "do you love Hina?" Then it skips to tomans meeting where Mikey is giving a speech and everyone's hyped up and cheering.
And then finally we get to these images we've seen before of everyone getting ready to fight.
But apparently we don't get to see the fighting???? We've just have to wait for the translations and the actual panels to come out now.
Bowing comes natural to show off kind of characters, they are awesome, they are cocky, they are amazing and they know it.
But even if bowing it’s natural instinct or a character trait, there are different ways to bow, and you must admit, this is an specific kind of bow.
Sonic really did spent great part of his formative years around Eggman.
This is sort of going off my recent artwork but I really wanted to take a moment to talk about Jay's adaptability. Specifically weapons. With the other ninjas, they seem to stick to one thing. Kai seems to always stick to a sword, Zane a long distance weapon, Cole an impact-based weapon, and Nya a spear-type weapon. (Lloyd still has the same sword he's had since season 11.) And while Jay does stick to chained weapons, he shows a lot of comfort with continously changing weapons in situations of need.
Personally, I think it's to make up for his element. Lightning is an incredibly powerful element that is likely very difficult to control. He probably doesn't WANT to use it much outside of his usual shocks and power outages. Unlike Lloyd, he doesnt need that much power because he's usually not fighting The Big Bad.
So he makes up for it with variety. With hand to hand combat, agility, speed, adaptability of weapons.
I mean, just look at all of them.
(And dont get me STARTED on how insane it is that he reguarly uses kusarigamas. That's RIDICULOUSLY DIFFICULT TO MASTER. I think this guy needs a ton of respect just for using chained weapons.)
But the coolest thing, to me at least, is that it looks like he specifically trained in the other ninjas weapons. (Maybe the others did too? But i dont really see it as much with them.)
This scene in crystallized is what got me.
Cole literally just threw his weapon to Jay, trusting him to know how to use it. And Jay kicks butt.
I wonder if a little 15 yo Jay trained in the training yard for hours, frustratedly hacking at something with a katana, then training with a hammer, switching to a spear, then to a bostaff, then to sai, and just keeps going and going until he's comfortable with all of them. He cant be the weak man on the team. If his power isnt going to cut it, then he needs to master weapons. Master combat. He wont be the weak link. He refuses to.
Anyways sharkanalysis is back
like mother like son 🌼

Jay: "Is it okay if we hug him every time he feels like that? Like, we've all been on the self-loathing train here and some of us still haven't gotten off, so we get it."
Kai: "Yes... the feeling of guilt and contempt is not pretty by any means, I agree with Jay. Master, would you like us to hug you or at least be close to you when we feel you need it?"
