Danyal and Damian find out that Ra's intends to have them fight to death for the title of heir so they decide to have a duel during a mission and fake the loosers death. This way the stronger one gets to have the title, just like how Ra's wanted, but they wouldn't have to kill eachother. They don't want to disobey their grandfather, but surely this would have the same result without unneeded tragedy.
Damian wins so he claims that he killed Danny for being weak. They promised to never try to contact eachother so the league would not find out. They wouldn't know eachothers situations from the outside after all. They couldn't risk it. After years Danny knows that Damian is Robin in Gotham but doesn't know if hes out of the league or not. Damian has no idea where Danny is and never told the batfam.
Then some magican tries to kill Robin by summoning his dead brother to exact revenge. Damian is sure that the summoning will not work because Danny should be alive and well, only to be devastated to see the ghost of his brother appear from the summoning circle.
Additional thoughts. They have their own code made up of sign, gestures, and body language they can use to communicate hidden meanings behind their words or just completely different things. They have mastered the art of having a private conversation while to outsiders it looks like they're verbally ripping eachother to shreds. I can see them using this to figure out how to deal with the situation while keeping up the ruse. Maybe the bats come in and deal with the mage while Damian and Danny are "arguing" and "antagonizing" each other. While in reality Damian is convincing Danny that the bats can be trusted and Danny is debating if the risk of revealing everything is worth it, and if its already too late not to. And when they agree on dropping the act the bats get whiplash from the arguing turning into a tight hug in a second.
      [Master List]
 Danny liked to believe he was a good person, with a good heart, but even he knew heâd decided to do this more out of boredom than anything else. There were a lot of places and people he could help with his powers and wealth but there were only two reasons heâd agreed to help Lady Gotham. The first being; sheâd asked. Who was he to turn down a city spirit whoâd come to ask his help? What reason could he have for turning her down? Well, he was busy with his kingly duties, but that was exactly why he had to do it. He was bored.
           Having graduated with his bachelorâs in the previous semester and the realms being completely calm and peaceful for the first time in a few thousand years, heâd grown bored. Heâd honestly been considering finally dealing with the GIW on a more official basis (though he wasnât sure he would be able to without overturning the Anti-Ecto Acts) but had ruled it out. Heâd banned ghosts from Amity Park years ago and had discovered the GIW wasnât doing too well for itself anymore.
           SoâŚ.
           Heâd agreed.
           Of course Lady Gotham had been entirely ambiguous with her request and thus heâd decided to take certain liberties in the way he chose to help. If he was being honest he thought his ideas were much more helpful than what she may have been expecting. Heâd hung up his metaphorical cape and retired Phantom shortly after high school. As king, he was still Phantom, but he didnât plan on ever flying around as a vigilante again.
           He wouldnât have agreed to help if it meant heâd have to pick up his old mantle again.
           Teen hero Phantom had died on a dissection table and there was no amount of Ectoplasm strong enough to bring him back.
           Only a bit of research told Danny all he needed to know about Gotham and how he could best help. The birds and bats had rogues covered, they didnât need Phantom anyways. But the thing that led to so many people becoming goons? To dealing drugs? To taking up crime? That was something neither the birds nor the bats were handling.
           So using an infinitesimal amount of his disgustingly vast wealth, Danny bought a decent sized building in the middle of the Bowery, bought and apartment building nearby, and packed his things. Moving wasnât difficult considering his handle on opening portals to the infinite realms and the fact that he was currently living in his keep.
           Jazz had been⌠confused. She thought he was throwing away his freedom, shunning her hopes that heâd go for his PhD, but after heâd explained what he was doing she was more than happy to help in any way she could. After all, she was interning as a psychologist at Arkham Asylum while finishing her PhD at Gotham U. Anything that got her little brother to spend more time with her was a win in her books.
           Getting the building ready for Dannyâs plan was the most time-consuming part, but nothing he couldnât handle. He took all the necessary precautions, had the building inspected and fumigated, installed heating and air conditioning, replaced the worn-out plumbing, and had Tucker create the best security system known to man- or ghost. He did all the same in the apartment building heâd bought (he also lowered the rent a fair bit without telling any of the current tenants).
           Once the building wasnât literally collapsing, he had the carpeted floors replaced (there was no saving the blood crusted carpets) with hard wood floors and colorful area rugs. At this point people had begun to notice all of the work going into the building, they didnât ask questions though, that would be very Gothamite of them. Danny had spent every waking moment working on the building, hadnât stepped outside more than a handful of times, and certainly hadnât met any of the neighbors.
           That was kind of the opposite of his intentions.
           So heâd looked around for soup kitchens in the area, found one that served dinner at a time that fit in his schedule, and started volunteering. A few days after contacting them about volunteering he got a call that he was cleared to start whenever, and he agreed to come the next evening.
           He arrived a bit earlier than theyâd suggested but the woman in charge didnât seem to mind too much.
           âIâm Molly, youâre early.â A woman much taller than Danny with broad shoulders and biceps thicker than his head, crossed her arms and cocked an eyebrow. âI assume you want to work?â
           He nodded, dumbstruck.
           âGood. This way.â He followed her without a second thought. He found himself in a large kitchen filled with the sounds of chatter, chopping, and music. A couple of the volunteers were singing to the music while cooking. It was overall, really pleasant. âYou know how to chop vegetables?â Molly asked.
           He felt⌠condescended a bit but brushed it off. âYeah I can chop.â
           âGood, Les! Youâve got a new chopping buddy. Lanky, take a break.â Molly shouted orders to the rest of the staff while Danny took over chopping from Lanky, apparently.
           A young woman -he assumed she was Les?- handed him the knife Lanky had been holding and pointed to a large sack of potatoes. âChop all of those, then put them into the pot to your right.â She brushed a strand of light brown hair behind her ear and continued chopping carrots.
           The two chopped in relative silence, the sounds of the kitchen washing over them, until he finished the sack of potatoes heâd been working on. Danny was a lot slower than Les but she had more carrots than he had potatoes, so he finished first. âDone.â
           She looked up, finished what she was doing, and wiped her hands on her apron. âGood. Can you finish these carrots while I move the potatoes and see what else we need done?â He got to work on the carrots while Les ran around making sure everything was running smoothly. By the time she returned he had finished the carrots as well.
           âGood,â There was approval in her voice, and he fought off a blush. âDinner is starting soon. Weâve plenty of people working on the food, you up for serving?â He nodded, wiping his hands on his own apron before following her away from the kitchen.
           âWash up here.â She gestured to a sink beside the door leading to the eating area. While he washed his hands she explained what heâd be doing. âYouâre just serving one dish, so itâs not complicated. One ladle-full per tray, no seconds, there wonât be leftovers as it is. Be kind and respectful, we have people if anybody gets rowdy so donât try to be a hero.â It was a strange warning but⌠well, it was Gotham.
           He nodded obediently and followed her to the pot of stew that was already made which heâd be serving from tonight.
           âService starts in ten minutes; weâve already got quite a line. Someone will come to relieve you for a break in two hours. Dinner last four hours- I assume youâre here for the whole night?â He nodded again. âGood, youâll get a twenty-minute break to eat and rest before going back to give someone else their break, understand?â
           It was a relatively easy job- though he tried not to think too deeply about some of the people he served. You canât save everybody, Danny. Jazzâs voice echoed in his mind as he watched two young boys get food, refusing to make eye contact with any of the volunteers. The older boy muttered a quiet âthanksâ before dragging the younger boy away and finding a spot in the corner away from everybody else.
           He tried to put them out of his mind as he continued to serve the everybody else. He couldnât. Danny found himself glancing towards the corner every few minutes to watch out for the boys, something about them reminded him of Jazz and himself- though he wasnât sure why. Other than the overprotective older sibling thing, there wasnât much to compare. Still, he felt a sort of⌠pull towards the boys.
           It wasnât ectoplasmic, they just⌠clearly they needed help- two kids wouldnât be in a soup kitchen if they didnât but- You canât save everybody, Danny. And youâll kill yourself fully trying to. Jazz was right, like usual- of course heâd never tell her that but-
           â-nny? Hello?â Someone tapped his shoulder, his head whipped to the side, startling the newcomer. âSorry man, just trying to send you on your break. You good?â
           Danny nodded, setting down the ladle and moving aside for the other man. He needed to clear his mind.
~~~
            He painted the walls. Pale colors that complimented the even more colorful posters he hung over top and went nicely with the rugs. He considered tuning it down a bit when it came to the furniture, but what was the point? Colors were fun- kids liked colors, right? So the plastic tables and chairs were yellow and red and green and blue and purple and any other color you could think of.
           And once the furniture was moved in he was able to buy toys. Toy boxes were filled with various brand new and colorful toys, shelves were packed with unread books in perfect condition, and crayon boxes with coloring books were laid neatly on each table. The cabinets were stocked with Sam-approved snacks, the first aid kit was over-stocked, and the closet was filled with a wide range of clothing for kids who might not have hats, gloves, coats, or anything else they might need. He'd buy more when he finally had kids to buy for.
           Lady Gotham hadnât said a word about his plan, but sheâd nodded resolutely, thanked him, and went on her way, and that was enough encouragement to continue.
           On one of the last days of constructions, Danny received a visitor.
           âSo this is where youâve been, eh babypop?â
           Looking up from the paperwork Danny had been poring over, he smirked. âI guess I missed living in a haunted town.â
           She rolled her eyes and sauntered closer. âSo youâve- what? Traded your throne for a plastic rainbow chair?â
           âI didnât trade anything. Lady Gotham asked for help, and I had time. Itâs not like Iâll be here forever. Just until Gotham is faring a bit better. Maybe Iâll find someone I trust to give this place to sometime down the line.â
           Ember leaned her hip against his desk and crossed her arms. âAnd youâre doing this alone?â
           He shrugged. âJazz is in school and interning at Arkham, Samâs in San Francisco with Val and Tucker, and who knows where Dani is.â He frowned at something on the paperwork before shrugging again and writing something down.
           âThat wasnât what I meant, kid.â
           âIâve gotten really good at the whole duplication thing recently so, yeah, I was going to do this alone. Who else would help me? I mean, maybe Iâll hire some help down the line, but Iâve got to be established first.â Danny knew full well that his current plan would have him exhausting himself on a daily basis. Working long days, by himself, while duplicating himself enough to take care of an unknown number of kids would drain him.
           A hand grabbed his pen away before he could keep working on his paperwork and he looked up to try and snatch it back. Ember was leaning into his space, holding the pen away from him. âI was offering to help, Babypop. Actually, Iâve talked to a few people who are offering to help.â
           Frowning, Danny searched the desk for another pen. âYou do realize this isnât like the Infinite Realms, right? You canât duel a kid, you canât mind control children, you arenât allowed to fuck shit up here.â
           âWow, is that all you think Iâm capable of?â The hurt in her voice was feigned but he wondered if there was a tiny bit of truth behind it.
           âThatâs not what I meant, Ember. I- just- who wants to help?â
           She smirked.
           That was how Danny found himself surrounded by ghosts, going over rules and expectations if they wanted to help. Lunch Lady, Ember, Dora, and a few others he didnât know as well, listened as he laid down the law. The safety of the kids came before all else. It came before their own safety, it came before Dannyâs identity, it came before everything. If they were going to do this, they would be doing it the right way.
           âThere is also the matter of the birds and the bats.â Danny sighed, leaning against his desk and facing his friends? Subjects? Fellow ghosts.
           Ember scoffed. âI donât need that talk from you, babypop.â
           âNo no- not the birds and the bees. The birds and the bats. Gotham vigilantes.â The ghosts nodded in understanding. âThey are not to be messed with, understood? The Anti-Ecto Acts are still very much in play, and I cannot tell you what side the birds and bats will be on but presumably, the governments. Batman founded the Justice League so not only does he work for the government, but they failed Amity multiple times, I do not trust them.
           âFirst and foremost; Batman. Heâs the leader of the birds and bats as far as I can tell. Heâs been around for over twenty years, the worldâs greatest detective, and keeps up with heroes like superman, avoid at all costs. His sidekick is Robin, a kid in green, red, and yellow, he has swords, and we all know that despite his age, he is probably pretty dangerous.â
           âOkay we get it; you beat all of us while you were a scrawny fourteen-year-old.â Ember scoffed.
           âEveryone else is listening quietly, Em.â He glared pointedly. âAnyway, next is Nightwing- heâs technically Bludhavenâs vigilante but he helps around Gotham on the regular. Wears black and blue, my understanding is heâs generally pretty friendly, but I donât want to take any chances. Then thereâs Red Robin, heâs said to be a tech genius and considering Tuckerâs obsessed with him, Iâd say thatâs probably true. Despite that, heâs not chump, Iâve seen some videos, he can fight, and he fights dirty. He wears black and red.
           âRed Hood wears the bat emblem, but he works mostly on his own in Crime Alley. He wears a red helmet- I know, he should be wearing a hood, but whatever. Hood is the only one that Iâve heard a good deal about, Iâve heard whispers of him in the realms, spirits who are grateful to him for avenging them like to call him the avenger of the dead. I have a great deal of respect for him. That being said; Red Hood kills, he is the only vigilante in Gotham that carries guns- not dangerous to you, but still, avoid him at all costs.â
           âI donât see the importance of such a warning, we cannot die.â Dora frowned.
            Danny nodded in agreement. âNo, youâre right, you probably donât need to be all that concerned. However, if they find out about us and what we are, thereâs no telling if theyâll get their hands on ghost tech from my- from the Fentons.â Ember gave him a sympathetic look at his slip. âI donât want them learning anything about us or the Realms for all of our safety.
           âSignal is the daytime hero, he wears bright yellow and my understanding is heâs also super friendly. I found a video of him teaching street kids how to do a backflip. Iâve also seen him punch goons into next week so again, dangerous. Spoiler wears purple, sheâs a badass any way you look at it. Sheâs quippy, flippy, and intense. More intense though is black bat, who wears all black and doesnât speak.â He took a deep breath and made sure heâd said everything already. âI think thatâs everyone. Questions?â
      The daycare was almost entirely finished, Danny had been spending more time there than at his apartment, and heâd had Tucker craft fake identities for everybody who wanted to help out. With how stressful things had been Danny felt the need for an extra-large, extra caffeinated, heart attack inducing coffee. There was one coffee shop he loved in the Upper East Side that knew him well. Heâd come by for a coffee every morning since moving to Gotham five weeks ago and the baristaâs had quickly began recognizing the man who got a black coffee with seven shots of espresso and a disgusting amount of syrup. He imagined not many people got that kind of drink. (He hoped).
           Jesse smiled when Danny approached the counter and began typing his order from memory. âHowâs the construction going, Danny?â They asked.
           Offering his own tired smile, Danny nodded. âConstructionâs done, just finishing up some stuff on the inside and paperwork.â
           âThatâs great!â Jesse accepted Dannyâs card, swiping it through their register. âMy uncle lives in the Bowery and he has a little girl. The daycare could really help a lot of people.â Their voice was warm and slightly sad at the same time. âI hope it works out.â
           Taking his card back and their words as a dismissal, Danny gave a nod and moved towards the hand-off plane to wait for his drink. He checked his phone; Jazz had been blowing it up with more ideas for his egregious wealth could benefit the people of Gotham. Sheâd mentioned a lot of ideas that were⌠well they werenât bad per se, but Danny already had a lot on his plate with the Daycare opening in just under a week.
           He wrote each suggestion down in his notes app anyways. A lot of them were things Gotham already had; food banks, homeless shelters, etc. but some of them were more interesting. A mechanic who fixed up cars for free, a tutoring program for kids who werenât in school but wanted to go back, classes on how to combat different kinds of gasses and poisons (specifically fear gas, Poison Ivyâs different toxins, and Joker Venom), first aid programs, and a whole lot more. Danny hoped to implement a lot of Jazzâs ideas at some point, but for now, he was just one guy.
            One guy who barely saved himself.
           Jesse handed Danny his drink and waved as they turned to help another customer. Moving towards the exit, Danny narrowly avoided crashing into a bigger man who clearly didnât have special awareness but in turn crashed into a much smaller man.
           âOh shit!â Dannyâs drink spilled all along his front and onto his shoes and he cringed at the painful heat coming into contact with his sensitive scars. âIâm really sorry.â He sighed, looking over the other man to see he hadnât actually spilled any of his drink on the other man. Thank Ancients.
           The other man, who was only slightly shorter than Danny, was pressing napkins into Dannyâs shirt. âDonât worry about it. Are you okay? That looked really hot.â
           Danny nodded, taking the napkins from the other man and wiping away what he could without rubbing his scars. âYeah⌠it was. Iâm just glad I didnât spill it on you.â He froze. âI didnât, right?â
           The other man shook his head. âIâm fine, thanks. Let me buy you another one- it was kind of my fault anyways.â
           âWe both know I crashed into you.â Danny raised an eyebrow. He didnât need anyone to buy his coffee, he was disgustingly wealthy, if anything, he should be buying the stranger his coffee as an apology for crashing into him.
           âWhatever, let me buy your coffee as an apology anyways.â Danny shrugged, following the man up to the counter. He was going to buy a replacement anyways; he might as well let this stranger buy it for him.
           Jesse raised an eyebrow at the duo. âOh god. I was hoping you two would never meet.â
           Danny and the man looked at each other strangely before looking back at Jesse. âWhy?â They asked in unison.
           âTwo large hot coffees with seven shots of espresso and fifteen pumps of vanilla?â They raised their eyebrow, looking between the two men judgmentally.
           Danny turned to the stranger, who in turn did the same, both looked at each other before promptly bursting into laughter. âOh my Ancients, you too, huh?â Danny pretended to wipe away a tear as the other man ran a hand through his hair.
           âA man of taste.â
           Jesse swiped the manâs card. âIâll have them in a minute, Tim, Danny.â They nodded to each of the men dismissively and they took their cue.
           They took a seat near the hand-off plane and Danny realized heâd never introduced himself properly. âIâm Danny, sorry about almost dropping my coffee on your very expensive looking suit.â
           The man -Tim apparently- waved a hand. âDonât worry about it. Iâm Tim, sorry about making you dump boiling hot coffee all over yourself.â
           âBetter my t shirt and jeans than your Armani suit.â
           âI save the Armani for special occasions.â Tim smirked. âSo what could you possibly be doing that requires a level of caffeine that could kill an elephant?â
           Danny rolled his eyes. âJeez, you sound like my sister. Iâve spent the last five weeks renovating a place in the Bowery and turning it into a daycare. Only a few days before it opens, and Iâve already got a couple of kids signed up, so I imagine Iâll be drinking this every day for the rest of my life. How about yourself? You must have a crazy job to be drinking that much coffee.â
           Tim looked surprised briefly before masking it. âIâve got some business meetings today Iâve been putting off for a while. I usually drink a few coffees a day to get through all the bullshit the board likes to pull.â
           âYou must be pretty high up to be dealing with a board. I know how much those meetings suck. I usually just fake an emergency- of course they start to catch on when you do it every single time- but you know- I donât really care.â He chuckled thinking about the last council meeting in the realms when Frightyâd almost had an aneurysm from Dannyâs antics.
           Timâs head tilted. âWhere do you work?â
           He hadnât anticipated this question which was stupid because he was the one whoâd brought up dealing with his own board, Danny was saved by Jesse. âTim!â They called from the bar. Two identical coffees sat on the hand-off plane and the men moved in unison.
           Drink in hand, Danny turned to Tim. âWell thanks for the coffee, Tim. Iâve gotta get back to the daycare but it was nice meeting you!â He smiled, offering a hand to shake.
           Tim took it, holding his own coffee in his other hand. âYou too, Danny. Iâll see you around?â
           âUnfortunately!â Jesse called from behind the bar.
Amity Parkers moving to Gotham for college. Sam and Paulina pooling their trust funds together to buy an abandoned hotel and fitting it as apartments for everybody. They all train together in the courtyard to keep their skills up and just because it's fun. Suddenly an influx of super competent self-trained (or maybe ghost-trained) young adults.
Everybody having their little niches and suddenly they all have more free time that's not being taken up by ghost attacks so many of them started different YouTube channels with info they found out from the ghostly residents of Amity. Star and Paulina running a history of beauty channel going over makeup, hair styles and fashion, special guest Sam when going over alt fashions. Dash and Kwan running one on the history of sports. Wes and Mikey running a conspiracy theory podcast. Valerie running a martial arts channel. Danny just info-dumping about space and spacecraft in videos that range from 45 minutes to four hours. Tucker running a how-to channel for fixing tech and coding. Sam running a combination true crime and witchy channel. The Trio running a Let's Play channel.
Ghostly things happening in all of the videos and everybody guesting on everybody else's channels leads to everybody thinking it's all an elaborate ARG. Danny just floating through the walls half-asleep with a glowing shaker bottle in the background. Some of them when they're in the middle of a rant seem to forget to take a breath or their eyes or freckles start glowing. On a livestream Paulina snaps at somebody off screen and her eyes are suddenly glowing green. Danielle pops in during a charity livestream that the Trio are running and calls Danny-Daddy, Sam-Mom, and Tucker-Dad and is just floating on the back of the couch. Danny doing a stream to watch a rocket take off and suddenly a robe and crown flash and he disappears in a flash of green and the stream is just dead space until the rocket's about to take off and Danny comes running in and jumps over the back of his chair to watch it and cheer.
âHey. Uh, Johnny?â Danny said awkwardly, âWhat does it mean when one of the older ghosts calls you their favored and why does it freak people out?â
Johnny 13 gave the halfa a bewildered look, âDude. Didnât you listen to Death? At all?â
âDeath?â Danny scrunched his face, âWhat do you mean? I donâtâŚâ
âWait.â Johnny straightened, âYouâve talked with Death, right? She explained-?â
Danny shook his head, confused, âWas I supposed to?â
âWhen you first died, sheâs supposed to appear. She gives a whole spiel and then transfers a bunch of information.â Johnny frowned, âShe did it for Plasmius, so itâs not a halfa thing.â
âOh.â Danny looked down, âWhat if⌠What if someone died and came back a few times very quickly? Would that⌠Would that cause any problems?â
Johnny stilled, horrified, âOk. Look, do you want to talk about your death? Because Iâm not asking if you donât, but...â
âI guessâŚâ Danny said, âSo you know that my parents made the portal, right?â
âYeah.â Johnny said.
âTheyâd been trying to do it for a long time. Plasmius actually worked with them for a while back when they were in college. Itâs why all of their tech is similar in design.â Danny explained, âThey built the thing, plugged it in, turned it on⌠and nothing.â
âBut it works now.â Johnny frowned.
âYeah. It does.â Danny nodded, âBut remember my friends? Sam and Tucker?â
âThe edgy emo and the computer geek?â
âAs Samâs friend, I am obligated to inform you that she is goth not emo⌠but yes, those two.â Danny smiled sadly, âMy mom and dad were upset. They left the house and Jazz was working her shift at a library. The whole house was empty and I was⌠you know. A normal teenager home alone.â
Johnny snorted at that, âAh yes. A completely normal teenager
âYeah, yeah. The point is, the first thing I did after being left home alone was call my friends over.â Danny rolled his eyes, âTold them what happened and⌠It was Sam who suggested we go down there first â sheâs always been into ghost and occult stuff â and look around. Tucker was down, because it was tech even if we didnât think most of the tech would work. He wasnât going to pass up the opportunity to mess around with it. Jazz had given me some lectures on lab safety â my parents donât usually follow it themselves â and I had a bad feeling so I put on the Hazmat suit.â
âThatâs not a superhero costume you came up with?â Johnny asked, eyes widening.
âNo, um. Itâs a hazmat suit. The only way I changed my form was the insignia and even then that was Samâs idea.â
âOh.â
âYeah, but umâŚ.â Danny paused, âWe wound up standing outside the portal. It wasnât working or anything, but there was a big spooky metal hole in the wall. You know, the kind of thing youâd expect in sci-fi movies. Sam dared me to go in and I was nervous. That bad feeling just intensified, but again â fourteen. I wasnât being smart about it. So⌠I went into it. I kept going and it was dark. I was turning back when I tripped and I flailed. Accidentally hit some button that was on the side and it turned on.â
Johnny took a sharp breath.
âAnd um. Did you know that the portal takes a lot of electricity to start up?â Danny joked weakly, âTook three blocks worth. Um, lots of ectoplasm, too â from both the zone and the artificial stuff my parents use.â He shuffled, âSo um, turns out both those things can revive and kill people. So I just kind of â died and revived a lot until it turned on and basically spat me out into the lab.
âThatâs - KidâŚâ
âSo um, maybe since I was dying and reviving so much death didnât have a chance to fill me in? Honestly, would have like the heads up.â Danny said sheepishly, âI didnât even understand what had happened until ghosts started coming through the portal.â
âSeriously?â
Danny shrugged, âI mean, I kind of suspected. I was falling through floors. It was hard to ignore, but I didnât know - My parents are good inventors, but not the best scientists and it made things hard to figure out.â
âWhat? You bought that whole non-sentient BS?â
âNo.â Danny shook his head, âI just didnât buy any of it â and I mean none of it. I wanted nothing to do with the whole thing. The whole town thought my parents were crazy, they were always in the lab working, and I only ever saw them briefly once or twice a day. Donât get me wrong. Theyâre still my parents and I love them, but⌠they have two big priorities. Their work and their kids. Their work is just⌠a higher priority to them.â
âOh.â Johnny cringed, âOh. KidâŚâ
âSo yeah. Life sucks. Death sucks⌠but I really need to know what to do and why Ember is freaking out over me being called âfavored oneâ.â
âUh, right.â Johnny paused, âWell, itâs like old ghost language. Um. Basically, itâs like being called a really, really close friend or adopted family. Kind of like⌠âhey, this is my person that I love and protectâ. Itâs platonic unless they specify otherwise.â
âHuh, okay.â Danny blinked, âThat makes sense, but why would Ember freak out?â
âWell⌠who called you that?â
âOh! Clockwork and Pandora call me that when I visit.â
Johnny blanched, âWhat?â
âAnd now youâre freaking out, too.â
âYouâve been just- Kid! Are you just casually talking to them?â
âUm, yeah? They said it was okay?â
âDo you know nothing about the hierarchy of the- Wait. No. You didnât get to talk to Death. Of course you donât-â Johnny sighed â covering his eyes, âOkay, so do you know what the ancients are?â
âI thought that was just a saying.â
âNo, itâs not-â Johnny pinched the bridge of his nose, âThe Ancients are the most powerful spirits in the Zone. Theyâre ghosts, but they resemble ideals more than they do a person most of the time. Practically gods. The ancients are Undergrowth, Frostbite, Nocturne, Pandora, Clockwork, Vortex, and Pariah Dark. Thing is⌠where most ghosts plateau at a certain power level the ancients can just keep growing in power. Clockwork is one of the strongest â so strong, the Observants bound him to their will.â
âYeah, I heard about that, but heâs really nice, you know.â Danny smiled, âAnd he makes really good cookies really fast.â
Johnny stared at Danny for a long moment, âDanny. Do you not hear yourself right now? Heâs basically the god of time.â
âYeah, but if he didnât want me to visit, I wouldnât be able to find him.â Danny shrugged, âSo he told me if I can see the clocktower, Iâm welcome to come in.â
âKidâŚâ
âBesides. Iâm friends with half of those guys and theyâre cool.â
âWha- How many ancients do you know?â
âUm⌠All the ones you just listed? Iâm friends with Frostbite, Pandora, and Clockwork. I fought Undergrowth, Vortex and Nocturne before, but Nocturne likes me now. Um, Undergrowth doesnât like me, though. Loves Sam, though⌠Um, obviously I know who Pariah Dark is after the whole thing in Amity-â
Johnny stilled, âWait a minute⌠Kid. I need you to answer me honestly here⌠Did Pariah ever mention a challenge when you fought him?â
âWell, um. I guess? He was all formal speak, though, soâŚâ
âKid.â Johnny said very slowly, âDid he ever issue a challenge or accept a challenge from you?â
â⌠Um. He did say that he accepted my challenge or something, but wasnât that just fight-talk orâŚâ
âI think I get it now.â Johnny sighed, facepalming, âJust⌠maybe donât tell people about this and consider asking one of the ancients allies you have about what Pariah accepting your challenge means for you.â
âFor me? What-â
âJust⌠give it some thought.â Johnny paused, âAnd- Well, I can talk to Ember for you, yeah?â
âThanks.â
â
Danny curled up on a sofa as Pandora embraced him with three arms and ran her fourth hand through his hair.
âPandora.â Danny said softly, âSome of my friends say you, Frostbite, and Clockwork are ancients.â
âThey are correct.â
âI didnât know what ancients were.â
âI noticed.â Pandora laughed a bit, âBut youâre a sweet child. You helped me get my box back and did not demand my favor. Perhaps it was selfish not to tell you, but I didnât want to distress you. You are a kind and humble soul. Is it such a surprise I wish to continue seeing you?â
âYou thought I would stop if I did?â Danny asked, confused, âI mean, sure my other friends were shaken up by it, but they donât know you. Why would I be afraid when youâre so nice?â
Pandora blinked and then smiled warmly â a little laugh pulling from her throat. Oh, the innocence of such a young spirit, âWhy, indeed? I suppose I didnât give you or myself enough credit, did I?â
Danny shrugged, âI donât have room to judge people for being different anyway. Iâm a halfa. Pretty sure thatâs even rarer than being an Ancient, right?â
âI suppose that is true.â Pandora smiled, âThere are only a few halfas and none are quite like you. There will only ever be one of you.â
âDoes this have something to do with why I never got to meet death?â Danny asked, confused, âThatâs the only thing I can find that seems all that different-â
âIn a way⌠Yes, but there are many more differences. The main one is that you powers have grown beyond Vlad Masters and they continue to do so.â Pandora said, âYou are what we call a âJuna Potencoâ. Most realms will never have heard of such things, but us ancients do not forget and when faced with a gift like yourself⌠well, youâll only see more of us with time.â
âWhat does that mean? Is it bad?â
âNo, no. It is a gift, not a punishment.â Pandora promised, âYou are an inspiring soul, favored one, and it seems the realms themselves have seen that.â
âThat doesnât sound right.â Danny pulled away and sat up as he shook his head, âIâm a halfa, but thatâs what I am. It doesnât say anything about who I am. There isnât anything special about who I am.â
âEveryone else disagrees with that last statement.â Pandora shook her head, âBut I will let you in on the secret.â
âYeah?â
âThese are not due to your half spirit nature, but something truly special.â Pandora cupped his cheek, âDanny, do you truly wish to know? As amazing as this is, I am not sure you will be ready for the truth just yet.â
âIâm - Iâve been debating what colleges to apply for, but⌠I donât know if any of them will take me now with my grades. I still look fourteen â fifteen at the oldest⌠and I still feel fourteen.â Danny looked at Pandora with pleading eyes, âSo if this would impact my future, I think Iâd like to know. Before things get complicated.â
âAre you sure?â
âYes.â
Suddenly, everything froze.
Danny looked up to see Clockwork putting a medallion on Pandora while Frostbite gave him a smile.
âI presume youâre here to assist in informing him?â Pandora asked.
âIndeed.â Frostbite nodded.
âInforming me of what?â Danny asked, confused.
âWhen you went to face Pariah Dark, you stated your intention to fight him.â Clockwork said, âAnd he accepted your challenge. You fought in single combat, removed the Crown of Fire from his head, and then managed to get him into the Sarcophagus of Forever Sleep.â
âVlad-â
âPlasmius might have locked the Sarcophagus, but you have repeatedly bested him and even when he has gotten the best of you, it has not been in single combat. However, Plasmius at one point claimed your fight was a âfun challengeâ. You agreed â officially accepting it as such. When you defeated him, he lost any fragile claim to the throne.â
âClaim to the- Wait. What are you saying?â Danny glanced between them, âWhat? No. No⌠you have to be kidding me. Iâm just me. I was trying to help, not-â
âChild, your soul was always going to be tied to the zone one way or another.â Pandora said, âMortality is already a fragile thing, but someone so surrounded by ectoplasm at a young age all while experiencing the struggles you did with your parents absence⌠it was inevitable that you would be a powerful ghost.â
âBut, then, Great One.â Frostbite continued, âYou stood fully emerged in the space between worlds and thought of protection and forgiveness â mercy. You did not even consider vengeance or desires of your own. Only the wellbeing of others. It is an act of great sacrifice and not one many can complete so fully.â
âTo put it simply, Danny.â Pandora said, âYouâre one of us, Juna Protenco. New and young power that will grow infinitely. Though you are far from ancient, you will be with time.â
âAn ancient to be.â Danny said distantly.
âThe Ancient of Protection, Space, Mercy, and Matter.â Clockwork turned into his newborn form, âThe best candidate for king weâve had in a long time. Though, perhaps I am a bit biased.â
âDoes it have something to do with space-time?â Danny guessed, âBecause Matter, Time, and SpaceâŚâ
âCorrect.â Clockwork smirked, âMatter tells spacetime how to curve, and curved spacetime tells matter how to move. I guide you and you make changes that I will use to guide you again.â
Dannu blinked, âOh. I get it.â
âYou do?â Pandora blinked.
âThatâs domains for you.â Frostbite chuckled and then quickly explained when Danny gave him a confused look, âWe all innately understand our domains and their meanings. My domain is progression, society, and advancement.â
âMine is responsibility, hope, protection, and perseverance.â Pandora revealed.
âIndeed.â Clockwork transformed into the middle aged man again, âBut now that you know of your future, we must prepare.â He put his hand on Dannyâs shoulder, âYour coronation must happen by the time you turn eighteen. As Ghost King, you will need to learn some diplomatic skills. We will teach you while you finish your human schooling.â Clockwork promised, âYou can tell your parents the truth or you can say you are simply leaving for college, but Maddie and Jack Fenton cannot move to the Zone with you. Your sister is welcome. Your friends are welcome, but unfortunatelyâŚâ
âI understand.â Danny lowered his head, âI donât think Iâll tell them just yet. Maybe Iâll leave a note or a video, butâŚâ
Clockworkâs eyes glazed over briefly â clearly checking the timeline.
âThat is a good idea.â Clockwork nodded.
âOkay.â Danny swallowed, âI canât -â
âNo.â Clockwork said, âHonored as these two would be, they have their duties and people. They cannot. I am both bound by the Observants and a little too prone to acts of selfishness. It is too much power for me. No. It must be you.â
âYouâre not selfish. You helped me.â Danny tilted his head, confused.
Clockwork chuckled guiltily as Pandora made a face and Frostbite shifted awkwardly.
âThere is a reason people fear me, Danny.â Clockwork seemed more amused than anything by the sudden awkwardness, âI appreciate your trust in me, but I was not so good or kind in life. I hold domain over regret and retribution as well as time. It is a position I earned after giving and getting both in equal measure. I am not a protective spirit by nature. I am one that seeks justice and sometimes revenge.â
âI donât get it.â Danny frowned, confused.
âSoon, you will.â Clockwork said grimly, âBut for now⌠Trust me when I say all is as it should be.â
âOkay.â Danny said, âI trust you.â
âNow, time in.â Clockwork said. When Danny tried to give him the medallion he shook his head, âNo, hold onto it. I believe it goes without saying, but do not lose it.â
âI know. I wonât.â Danny promised.
âGood, now⌠I believe you have some friends to talk to?â
âEr, right!â Danny said and rushed off.
âHe doesnât know who you are?â Frostbite turned to Clockwork, âAnd you havenât told him?â
â⌠Heâll learn during his studies.â Clockwork admitted begrudgingly, âAnd itâs best that he come to me after he processes the information than during.â
âJust remember, Kronos.â Pandora glared as she handed over her medallion, âOne wrong move-â
âYes, yes, I am very aware of your opinions of me, Keeper of Hope.â Clockwork held a hand to Frostbite, âShall I take you back to your people?â
âEr, yes.â
âGood, then-â
âHey! I was not finished-â
âTIME OUT!â
Pandora sighed as they disappeared, âUgh. He is always such a petty menace. One of these daysâŚâ
Just found out about the Enough Stuff Non-Profit in Illinois and it got me thinking about Crime Alley and about if there was a place like that, theyâd work hard to keep it going.
Now Iâm imagining Danny, ghost king with its coffers, things at relative peace, but not having to actively work. Heâd want to still be able to give back I think even if itâs not actively fighting. What if Danny started an Enough Stuff shop. Everything there is free. Everything is donated. It runs on donations. (The first few months it runs on his savings; ghost money translates thankfully).
Danny lives in the apartment above the store and the store has two floors. Sam moves in next door and runs an apothecary and plant store. She ends up running a vegan bakery and coffee shop too. If you perform or write a poem, you get a free coffee and scone. If she has the chance, sheâll teach you about basic herbal remedies and also some basic first aid because while honey is an antibiotic, it doesnât do shit for something needing stitches. Jazz moves in and opens a free pediatric clinic. Tucker can be found running the business side of the non-profits and pushing Sam to âjust get an EMT certification already, youâre more than qualified, and you know you want to.â Val travels a lot, sheâs an Olympic martial artist, but when she settles someplace to train itâs usually with the trio in their Frankenstein apartment made up of the top two floors of three connected buildings. Between Danny finding he enjoyed training from his years as a hero and Sam wanting to always be in top form thereâs a gym there she can train in and Dannyâs usually free. She helps with whoever needs it when she has free time so she doesnât feel like a mooch for living there only part-time. She ends up saving some kid from a thug and deciding to train him up. This leads to the kid bringing more kids to learn from her. She ends up buying a building on the block and renovating it to be a gym and training facility for her and it gets added to the list of non-profits Tucker is running. (He only leaves his corner office, he insisted, during working hours for lunch or meetings and the occasional lunch meeting).
Tim losing his mind trying to find anything about them. Him constantly hitting firewalls of binary, Egyptian hieroglyphics, Esperanto and some other language he could only describe as auditory Zalgo text. Tim desperately wanting to investigate in person but he promised Jason heâd stay out of it until he asked.
Jason coming back from a long mission with the Outlaws seeing the âcute little trust fund kidâs experimentâ not only flourishing, but growing. He goes to research them only to find theyâre mostly squeaky clean. Thereâs some stuff about disturbance of the peace and minor property damage when a teenager, but that doesnât mean anything for someone setting up in Crime Alley. He watches them for a while, listened to what his guys said about them and the general opinion. He decides theyâre above board, but heâd still watch them.
Then he got shot. More accurately, a shot grazed just under his armpit where there was a gap in his armor. He ended up stumbling out of an alleyway and directly into the pathway of one red headed doctor.
Kinda want to add more Amity Parkerâs at some point. Debating having Paulina run a fashion house in the fashion district because she couldnât convince her dad to let her move to a place known as Crime Alley, and just spend a bunch of time at Dannyâs shop and maybe drop off âfits she made there. Star and Wes running a local radio station. Dash becoming a mechanic (after freaking out about not making it in football). Kwan opens a vet clinic. Eventually the Amity Parkerâs own a full two blocks of housing and businesses.
This idea sort of burst out of me like Alien so it's unedited. There will probably be more.
In short, Cas picks up on the fact that Danny is pregnant at a Wayne Gala and have the right idea but the wrong context.
Masterpost
------
Danny was barely holding it together and really he had been for a long time. It had sort of been fun and games at first when he became a hero. Sure his accident had hurt like hell but he'd sort of repressed that and for real? Lunch Lady? Box Ghost? Even Skulker was sort of a joke and he hasn't actually felt threatened. Sneaking around behind his parents backs and sneaking out with his friends had been fun. It had all felt like a game at first, and then somewhere in there things had gotten very real.
He'd known he couldn't count on his family to protect him but they couldn't even see Vlad was a threat. And he felt like he had lost the last of his innocence when he saw the clone Vlad had made of him melt. He hasn't been in time, he had panicked and he had only managed to save a couple by taking them into his own body to shield their still forming cores. Ellie and... should Danny name the other one or would he name himself when he was ready?
He kept touching his stomach over where he could feel the little balls of his mirror children hovering just below his own core. He was so tired all the time as they relied on his energy, he was eating more then ever and he knew his family was worried. He didn't think he could hide this and he couldn't predict when they would emerge. What if they did in front of his parents? They definitely wouldn't react well. And Vlad kept trying to use this against Danny. Promising to look after him and the babies if he was really insisting on carrying them, as if Danny could rip those tiny 'lives' out of himself now.
And no matter how many times he tried to tell his parents that Vlad was bad news, that he creeped Danny out and made him feel unsafe they wouldn't listen! Dad didn't even hear him and mom made sympathetic noises and then told him to bear with it for Jack's sake because he didn't have many friends.
So of course when Vlad had asked if 'Daniel' could accompany him to a gala in Gotham his father had agreed! Even his mother had agreed when Vlad promised it would be educational and safe! And here Danny was, hanging on by a fucking thread in a suit that felt uncomfortably tight around his middle, having just escaped being paraded around as Vlad heir like a particularly expensive watch. He was behind the snack table having piled a plate as high as he could and scarfing it down before Vlad could find him again and scold him for being rude. He hadn't noticed yet that a family of dark haired socialites kept giving him worried looks. A young woman with dark eyes signing frantically to a man with blue eyes and a dimpled frown.
It was the man who slid up carefully next to Danny trying not to startle since he seemed to have genuine food aggression.
"Yeesh kid you seem like you're starving! All those fancy Hors d'oeuvres are fun but not very cooling and I feel like I'd be a poor host if I didn't offer you something more filling! If you'll come me to the kitchen I'm sure our family butler would be happy to whip something up for you?" The man said with an inviting some that did nothing to sooth the way Danny's hackles raised instinctively.
He was about to say no on reflex when he spotted Vlad heading towards them with an expression like a thunder cloud. Danny's back went ridged and the other man followed his gaze with a frown. "You know what ya that sounds great let's go now!" Danny said dropping his half full plate on a nearby tray and dragged the stranger away with him as Vlad shouted after him.
"Daniel come back this instant! Unhand mister Wayne! Daniel this is unacceptable!"
'Mr. Wayne' took over leading them and spirited Danny through a back door as a bubbly blonde intercepted Vlad and a small woman slid in behind them like a shadow.
"So, Danial I assume?" The man asked, amusement crinkling around his eyes as Danny grimaced.
"Mr. Wayne I assume?" Danny returned, unaware of the way one arm was protectively wrapped around his stomach, but the girl noticed. It was Dicks turn to grimace.
"Okay ya, I go by Dick. What about you?"
"Danny," he said not reacting to the name, he'd heard far stranger. "And what about you?" He asked Cas, startling Dick a little because she was doing her 'shadow thing' and not many people would have noticed her.
"That's Cas, she has a hard time talking sometimes," Dick explained as Cas materialized and gave Danny a reassuring smile and wave.
The teen harrumphed but he did follow them down to the kitchen where Alfred was drinking a cup of tea, staying well clear of the foolishness upstairs. "Ah, hello young masters," Alfred he said, glancing between the three with a raised brow. Though the two who knew him could see the way his expression softened when Danny shrunk in on himself. "What can I do for you?"
"Hey Alfred do we have any leftovers from dinner or something filling we can whip up fast? Danny here is too hungry for just the fancy font for upstairs." Dick asked cheerfully.
Alfred raised his eyebrows again and looked at Cas who was standing behind Danny. Glancing at Danny to make sure he wasn't looking she grimaced then touched her stomach and mimed holding an infant.
Alfred's expression turned stormy for just a moment then smoothed. "Of course we do, Why don't you make our guest comfortable and I'll see what I can do. Do you have any allergies young man?" Alfred asked and Danny shook his head mutely.
"You're the best Alfie!" Dick said, hovering a hand over Danny's shoulder rather then actually touching him as he leas him towards the comfortable breakfast nook.
The boy seemed tight lipped and gaunt, his eyes flicking around them as if he expected a threat to pop up at any time. Dick slipped into the booth across from him. Trying to think of the best way to ask this kid how... why, and who hurt him.
Cas has stayed in the kitchen, but not for long. She came to them with a tray of mugs moments later and slipped into the booth next to Danny. Gently she took his hands and pressed the warm mug unto them. He blinked and focused of it, as if on autopilot he lifted it to his lips, Cas keeping a hand on his elbow to steady him as he drank.
The warm comforting drink, and hand on his arm, presence by his side as Cas slid imperceptibly closet and closer till she was pressed against Danny's shoulder, felt like they were taking him apart from the inside. Thawing out the cold numbness he shielded himself behind. Half way through his tea he glanced up, at the worried blue eyes so like Jazz, so worried and warm.
He put down the mug suddenly as a sob shook his body. Cas wrapped her arms around him and pulled him close, cooing comforting wordless little sounds as she let him bury his face into her chest and just sob heaving, exhausting outbursts of repressed emotion.
"Are the babies okay?" She asked and he froze, his breath catching in his throat. She clicked her tongue and rocked him gently. "Okay, okay, not in trouble," she promised.
"They- I don't know, they were so weak, Iâm trying, but I don't know if I can keep them alive." Danny sobbed lifting his hands to cover his face.
"The stress can't be helping," Dick pointed out, climbing across the table like it was nothing to sit next to them and rub Danny's back. Danny gave a little hiccupping hysterical laugh. "Do you have support, or like, do you know your options?" He asked awkwardly.
"I'm not getting rid of my babies! I don't care if the man who made them is an obsessive creep who drugged me! I love them they're MINE!" The feral protectiveness seemed to startle Dick even as Cas continued to make soothing sounds.
"Your choice, only yours," she promised. "Have help?"
Danny sniffled and shook his head. "Safe?" Another shake of the head.
"The man who... did this?" Dick asked as delicately as he could. Another hysterical laugh.
"I've tried! I've tried to tell my parents he's a creep, he's dangerous but they don't listen! My dad thinks he hung the fucking stars, mom says he's harmless. They don't believe me! I-I can't tell them about the babies. They'd make me get rid of them or worse! I can't." Danny sobbed and Cas soothed.
"Okay, okay, you don't have to." She promised. "You stay with us, you and babies safe, never have to see him again."
"Ya right. Wait, your serious? What" Danny asked, pulling back and looking at her with wide bloodshot eyes.
"She's very serious young master," Alfred said as he approached making Danny jump. there was a hard set to the old man's jaw and steal in his eyes that left no room for questions as he set a plate of eggs, sausage, and fruit in front of Danny. "Master Bruce has a foster license and is a mandatory reporter. I'm sure once he hears even a fraction of this he will insist you stay. I will prepare a room for you. Am I to assume the man who's shouting demanding your return upstairs is the source of this distress?"
Danny swallowed and nodded, Alfred nodded back and paused to rest a gloved hand gently on Danny's hair before walking away briskly.
"Eat," Cas said, nudging him gently to let go of her. "As much as you want. Still hungry? We raid Tim's secret cereal stash."
"Gasp! You know where it is? You've been holding out on me?!" Dick demanded with exaggerated betrayal and as the two started to banter Danny ate. He was glad of the distraction, of not having the attention on him as he devoured the healthy, and nutritious meal the butler had made for him. It had been a while since he'd had a good home cooked meal, it made his core feel warm and he could feel the two little echoes as his hummed.
The babies were happy too, he didn't believe these people could keep him safe from Vlad really, but this was nice. Maybe he would let them try, get a few more good meals, a respite, and maybe... maybe his parents would finally notice that something was wrong and actually stand up for him?
That was probably wishful thinking but he could hope right? there was no harm in that.
