Every couple years or so, the Bats are required to take a group photo to update the JL website (idk why, they are required to take a vigilante group picture), and Jason consistently refuses to show up. So this year, Tim just draws the lines of the Red Hood helmet on a bright red balloon and then floats it between him and Nightwing. They absolutely refuse to acknowledge that it isn't Jason. They put it up on a billboard instead.
Jason finds out about it when he drives back into Gotham and the highway going into the city has a 'Keeping Gotham Safe' billboard and it's a picture of the Bats looking extremely serious with the Red Hood Balloon floating behind them.
boring meeting
also on AO3
It started so quietly no one really noticed.
People were disappearing. A veteran from the mountains, a firefighter from the city, a surfer from the coast, and on and on. All gone without a trace. The local authorities investigated, of course, but they never found any leads. After some time, the people were simply written off as missing, and their communities moved on. They remained forgotten until the Justice League got involved. Their systems flagged the uptick in disappearances, and once a Bat took a look, they were immediately suspicious. It took another Bat before the link was finally found. And it took Red Hood disappearing to confirm it. The missing people all had previous close calls with death. And so the League followed protocol – they announced an investigation.
The disappearances stopped.
It was a relief at first. There were far too many people who fit the profile, and none of their analysis could discern a usable pattern from the previous disappearances. But as time stretched on, they got nervous. Surely whatever this was wouldn’t just stop once noticed? What was going to happen next, and when? Justice League Dark got involved. Only once John Constantine started poking around did they find a lead, and even then only thanks to dumb luck.
When Constantine was finally dragged to the town where one of the early disappearances occurred, he zeroed in on an old woman living in a care home. As it turned out, she was mildly magically sensitive. Apparently her grandmother was a witch or something of that sort. But crucially, she had suffered a nearly fatal heart attack almost a decade ago. And she was all too happy to talk about the ‘nice young man’ from her dream who offered to take her away.
She granted Constantine permission to dive into her memory to learn more. Whatever he learned did not make him happy. He said he’d be back after a quick trip to Hell and disappeared, much to Batman’s irritation. But true to his word, surprising some, he returned with slightly singed clothes and a book.
So here he was, chalking sigils onto the floor. Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern watched him work in silence, likely trying to wrap their minds around the fact that there was a so-called Ghost King who they were about to request an audience with. Constantine finished up his work and stood at what they all assumed was the front of the circle he had just drawn.
“I do all the talking, yeah? These ones can be tricky.”
Without waiting for a response, he waved his hand, magic glowing at his palm. The circle responded in kind, pulsing white then fading into a harsh, vibrant green. A large black, green, and red elaborately-decorated sarcophagus rose inside the circle, appearing to phase straight through the floor.
“Dramatic fuckers, eh?” Constantine muttered.
A thick fog billowed out alongside it, quickly surging out past the boundary of the circle. It spread upward, threatening to fill the entire room. Constantine cursed to himself and waved an arm, clearing out the fog around them even as it thickened throughout the rest of the room, obscuring the view of the ceiling and walls save for the door directly behind them.
A deep voice echoed through the room with no discernible source. Everyone tensed.
“Who would dare wake the sleeping tyrant?”
A pair of bright green slits appeared from the depths of the fog and widened into eyes.
“Eugh, it’s you.”
The voice lost its echo. It sounded annoyed but entirely human and...young? That didn’t stop Constantine from clenching a hand into a fist, charging magic and preparing for an attack. The eyes moved closer, revealing a pale face and snow-white hair that floated in an unfelt breeze.
“Peace, Hellblazer.”
A lanky figure stepped forward onto the sarcophagus from where they were floating. They wore all black save for their white gloves, white boots, and previously visible head. With an audible thunk they plopped down on the foot of the sarcophagus, one leg bent upward to rest their chin on and wrap their arms around.
“I mean you no harm.”
There was a pause as the others waited to see how Constantine would respond.
“We met?”
“No, but I know of you. And I must admit, I’m disappointed to see you working with the likes of them.”
They gestured to the others in the room.
“Yeah, well,” Constantine relaxed his fist but lost none of his tension, “Don’t meet your heroes.”
The stranger scoffed.
“Don’t flatter yourself. I just enjoy seeing demons annoyed.”
There was another tense pause as the stranger lazily looked over all those present. Constantine broke the silence again.
“Who might you be, then?”
The stranger slowly dragged their gaze away from Wonder Woman and back to the magician. After a pause they spoke.
“You may call me Ambassador.”
“Ambassador to ghosts?”
“If you’d like to think of it that way.”
Constantine straightened his posture.
“We would like to formally request an audience with His Majesty The King to discuss what we suspect is ghost activity in our world.”
The ambassador stared back in silence with squinted eyes before sighing and thumping their forehead to their knee.
“Where to even begin…” they whispered to themselves.
“Okay, let’s start with this.” They slapped the side of the sarcophagus and looked up. “What part of ‘sleeping tyrant’ wasn’t clear?”
“I was under the impression His Majesty was recently crowned and well-respected?”
The ambassador pinched the bridge of their nose and groaned.
“Ancients...”
They hopped to the ground without warning, causing everyone to flinch into defensive stances. If the ambassador noticed, they gave no indication.
“The king is a tyrant, he is trapped in forever sleep again, and I’d like to keep it that way this time.”
Constantine opened his mouth to respond, but was interrupted before he got a chance.
“Speaking of which, how’d you even summon him?”
“Summon?” Constantine choked out, clearly surprised.
The ambassador walked toward Constantine, making everyone save for him slide backwards a step. They looked down at the chalk marks on the floor.
“Ancients, this is archaic. Where’d you find it?”
After a few seconds of silence, the ambassador looked up at Constantine.
“Well?”
“Ah...Merlin.”
The ambassador raised an eyebrow.
“What? It’s bloody true!”
The ambassador huffed out a laugh and walked back to lean against the sarcophagus and cross their arms.
“Can’t fault his demonology, but this circle is Bad. I suggest you lose it.”
Constantine opened his mouth to speak, but was once again interrupted, this time from an unfamiliar voice echoing through the room.
“Lord Phantom.”
Everyone flinched as a set of black armor coated in purple flames stepped into view from the fog.
“’Sup Frighty?”
“The dark one is marked.”
The ambassador flicked their eyes to Batman and stared for several tense seconds.
“So he is. Just like the other one, but actually concealed. Must be barely contaminated.”
The ambassador squinted and tilted their head.
“Sure enough. It’s weak, but there’s a family bond there.”
Batman clenched his fist.
“Where is Red Hood?”
The ambassador straightened their head, unflinching and unblinking.
“Safe. And being cared for.”
Before Batman could respond, yet another voice echoed from the fog.
“These are the ones?”
The ambassador turned their back to Batman and groaned.
“Is anyone not coming?”
A giant, four-armed, blue-skinned, armor-clad woman stepped out of the fog with two sets of crossed arms. She had the smallest smirk on her face.
“Apologies. I wished to see those who would obstruct our evacuation.”
Superman and Green Lantern perked up and shared a short look of confusion. The woman turned her head to Wonder Woman, her smirk replaced with a grimace.
“I am disappointed to see one of my kin among them.”
“I thought she might be, but I wasn’t sure.”
Wonder Woman stepped forward.
“My Lady, I –”
“You were not asked to speak, Child.” The woman snapped.
Her voice shook the floor underneath them. Wonder Woman flinched and stared up at her with wide eyes. The heroes tensed for a fight. But to their shock, Wonder Woman slowly raised her arm to press a fist over her heart and bowed her head in deference.
“I will make my displeasure known,” the woman growled, voice still angry but no longer violently.
“Take Dora with you.”
“Do you think me unable to fend for myself, Little One?” Her mouth curved up into a fond smirk again.
“I know better than to doubt you,” they briefly smirked back, “but given my limited experience, I don’t hold them in high regard.”
After a pause they tacked on a “no offense”.
“None taken.”
The woman stepped backwards and faded into the fog. Superman took a step forward, eyeing the armor cautiously.
“Ambassador, my apologies for our unpleasant first meeting.”
He waited until the ambassador gave him a slight nod.
“May I inquire what your companion meant by ‘evacuation’?”
“Exactly what she said. Our kind are being hunted, and we are trying to save them.”
“In that case I must apologize again. We were not aware of this unfortunate situation. Had we been provided an explanation, we would –”
“Typical,” the ambassador scoffed, “your primary patron government is committing a genocide, and yet we’re at fault for not properly informing you.”
Superman was smart enough to bite back his standard “we’re independent” retort. Green Lantern stepped forward instead.
“If I may, Ambassador, my name is Hal Jordan. I am a member of the Green Lantern Corps. We are a wholly independent organization dedicated to peacekeeping across the galaxy.”
The ambassador looked him up and down slowly before turning their head away dismissively.
“I don’t talk to cops.”
The heroes were stunned to silence. The ambassador turned to the floating armor.
“Prepare the Keep. I’ll ward against this circle once the sarcophagus is back in its place.”
“My Lord.”
The armor bowed its head then faded into the fog. Batman stepped forward.
“We have no involvement in the violence against you or your kind.”
The ambassador turned to stare at Batman for several seconds, squinted eyes glowing brightly.
“You’re an excellent liar, Batman.” The fog crept forward and wrapped around their legs. “Unfortunately, I know you’re full of shit.”
“What points you to that conclusion?” Batman kept his voice neutral and steady.
The fog had risen to the ambassador’s chest. They scoffed.
“There are photos of you with Amanda Waller.”
Batman’s fist clenched harder.
The ambassador turned to look at Constantine as the fog enveloped them, leaving two glowing green spots.
“I suggest you not push this any further, Laughing Magician. There are some things in this universe that trump even your luck.”
The glowing green eyes closed, and the fog faded away, leaving an empty summoning circle and untouched room. After several seconds of silence, Wonder Woman finally raised her head and spoke.
“I must return to Themyscira, perhaps for some time. If that was who I believe it to be...something has gone very wrong.”
Superman glanced over the others, who were all still silently processing the encounter. He turned back to Wonder Woman to give her a nod, and she quickly walked out of the room.
Constantine reached into his coat and pulled out his flask. He unscrewed the cap with a heavy sigh and downed whatever was left. He looked tired and annoyed, same as he always did. But Batman could tell he was shaken.
He looked away from Constantine and back to the empty circle again. There was a lot of concerning information to process, but one key thing did slip through. The knight had called the stranger ‘Phantom’. He had come across that name once before. One of three legible words on a burnt piece of paper in an abandoned and destroyed facility. A facility that stank of a classified government cover-up. A facility Waller had sworn up and down she knew nothing about. But he had a lead. The other two words. Amity Park. A small town that only existed if you looked at paper maps printed several years ago.
He had to act quickly.

Jason could confidently say that Dead End Cafe was his new favorite place to eat.
The place was quirky, the small family that owned even more so, but oddly enough, it managed to fit into the little nook in Crime Ally without seeming out of place.
The shop and family had popped up out of nowhere about a year and a half ago. Bought out a whole block of crime ally that had been condemned for god knows how long (a two story shop, with two small buildings behind it.) And they had set up FAST.
Like big money fast.
Suddenly there was a nice little cartoony ghost theme Cafe with a house above and two small warehouses behind it with unknown contents. It screamed suspicious.
Jason had dug into the purchase and found it was infact, big money, two different sources. The head scratcher was that it was legitimate big money. The area had been bought under three names:
Daniel J. Manson-Foley-Fenton
Samantha A. Manson-Foley-Fenton
Tucker R. Manson-Foley-Fenton
It was clean. All of it. Apparently, a group of three high-school sweethearts, two of which were heirs to some pretty wealthy families) had decided that they were gonna move to Gotham and open a quaint little cafe in Crime Ally..... right.
He send a request to Tim to dig a bit deeper(fucker owed him a favour). Then proceeded to stake out the place as both Red hood and Jason.
Nothing. Not a damn thing. Apparently, the two warehouses were a greenhouse and a makeshift garage. He had searched all the electronic files (with Tim AND Barbara help!) Still nothing.
Samantha apparently liked to garden enough that she was willing to help feed all of Crime ally with it.
Tucker on the other hand, doubled as both a video game designer and someone who Timmy himself said he wanted in Wayne Inc. R&D (His current project was a prosthetic arm that was supposed to be better then anything on the market for people who lived in harsh environments? Notes about getting someone nicknamed Frostbite to help test them?)
The only odd thing that all three of them could find was that apparently, Daniel's parents believed they were ghost hunters. After digging further, Tim found that the whole town was ghost themed. (A tourist trap, which honestly explained the cafe theme). They did, however, make a large sum of money through patented inventions.
Honestly, so long as they were not doing anything in supervillain territory, Jason didn't care what they wasted their money on.
In a last ditch effort to find something, ANYTHING at this point. (This was actually starting to bug him, even the food they tested was clean, like "cleaner then you find in most of Gothams fast food places Jason" clean... he did not need that info replacement thanks.)
He evently caved and went inside the Cafe as Jason Todd.
The inside of the Cafe was just as weird as the rest of it. A mix of techno, Gothic punk, and peppy cartoon ghost that just... worked?
It was nice honestly, it was homey, but had a fun theme. It was the type of Cafe you looked for in the higher end of Gotham when you acted something different but still "upscale".
It should have felt out of place. But it didn't. The room was inviting, the food smelt delicious, there was a reading corner, the walls with hanging plants. It was nice. Too nice. Nice things like this didn't survive in Crime Ally. Jason knew that better them most.
Deep in thought, Jason nearly had a heart attack when a young voice spoke up.
"You smell funny"
Jason blinked before look down. Yep, that was a small child. A small three maybe four year old child who looked like a tiny female version of one Daniel M.F. Fenton.
"Um what?" Jason asked slightly thrown. Where had she come from?
The small girl barely came past Jason's knee but she still looked him dead in the eye before stating innocently,
"You smell funny, you're like the stinky piles that Cujo make in the yard."
Jason was pretty sure he just got told he's a peice of shit.
"ELLIE LILITH" a voice rang out.
Speak of the devil, Jason watched as Daniel rounded the counter walking quickly up to his.. daughter? (There had not been a kid mentioned in his files)
"You apologize right this second young lady, that was very rude" Daniel scolded.
"But mama it's true, like Cujo" EIlie protested.
(Maybe not a he) Jason thought as he watched the pair with an odd sense of bewildered amusement.
"Cujo" he asked looking at Daniel.
The man? looked mortified "our dog" was the reply before turning back to further scold the girl.
Jason definitely just got called a peice of shit.
(Well damn) he thought watching the back inforth between parent and daughter (kid might make a Gothamite after all)
in the end Ellie had given a half hearted apology about "sorry for calling the stinky man funny" before running off leaving Jason to talk with a horrified Daniel "please call me danny and our last name is a mouthfull" Fenton.
Apparently he was infact he/him being called mama was a thing form thier home town. Danny said he was cool with it so jason shrugged and accepted as another family quirk.
Jason had left the cafe that day with mixed feelings. Apparently, three highschool sweet hearts really had set up a quaint cafe in Crime Ally.... huh.
It was a nice place one Jason would like to go back to. But as stated earlier, nice places didn't last long in crime ally. The cafe would most likely be packed up and gone in a month.
The cafe was not gone in a month.
Or two, or three. By month four crime ally had slowly started to accept Dead End cafe as a neutral area similar to Dr. Leslie's clinic. They gave good food at prices that everyone was aware would run a normal business into the ground and treated everyone who came in like family. (It was almost scary how Danny never seemed to forget a name)
By month five Jason gave the kids that ran in his circles the ok to trust the Fentons. By month eight Dead End was declared off limits for robbery and gang fights. (petty crime may run rampant in gotham but even the roughest of gothamites won't mess with a place that gives freely without discrimination or a risk of cops).
By the first year, most of the gangs and small time thugs had accepted the Fentons as theirs and kept an eye out. They may not be able to stop the big names, but like hell thier favorite cafe was getting robbed by some upstart.
Jason can clearly remember sitting in his favorite spot with a book a little after the one year mark when one of the regulars had stopped Tucker. The whole cafe had seemed to hush as the mood in the cafe shifted.
"Look" said the guy (Jason was pretty sure he recently he had recently been working for Penguin) " it been bugging quite a few of us recently and we were hoping to talk with the two of you's" he raised his chin towards Sam who was also on the floor, (a rare day both Danny and Ellie were not in the shop).
"We know the two of you's can handle yourselves."
(Understatement, Tucker was built like Jason and was a good three inches taller with a mean right hook. Sam had been jumped a few times before the off limits and the damage she left was actully more the the average bat.)
"But more often then not its just your boy and your ankle bitter here. (Ellie has, in fact, a bit four different peoples ankles) "he's a real sweetheart that one, but fight wise he looks like a stiff wind would push him over." Jason could see a few others in the cafe nodding along. "Me and a few of the others have been doing some rounds when we can but it's not hard to see that the two of you are not on the floor often. We know you both do hard work at those shops of your, we appreciate it really, but it also leave a large amount of time when they aren't protected. It's practically an invitation to bastards looking for a quick buck." The man looked from both Tucker to Sam then back to Tucker. "We's was hoping to set up a chart with you when you won't be here. It won't be perfect but alot of us would feel alot better if Ma Fenton wasn't by himself so often."
Ma Fenton. It had been a bit odd for some of the people to get used to the fact that Danny was mama, and Sam was Papa. However, after they got used to it, it seemed to catch. Because unintentionally, Danny had become a parental figure to alot of people. He had a presence that made you feel safe and content. You needed advice? young or old danny had an ear ready and a plate of hot food. He was almost a foot smaller then both his partners, sweet and honestly not hard on the eyes. More then a few flirted him in passing (Jason was pretty sure that the ankles Ellie targeted were not random.... good on the brat.)
Danny was bright. Way to bright for Gotham. Jason might start swinging by at different times as well.
Jason had been about offer up his help with making a schedule when Tucker spoke up.
"Wow, um, so that's really thoughtful of you guys and by all means if it makes you guys feel better go for it." Tucker looked like he was struggling to find words glancing at an amused Sam. "There seems to have been a small misunderstanding" she said taking over.
"You see" Sam said grinning " it might not be Gotham but Amity Park had a unwritten rules of its own." Sam slowly moved towards the man that had stopped Tucker, all eyes in the cafe following. "Don't wander the graveyards." Step. "Don't go into the corn fields alone" Step. "Some of them were just for fun, don't sit under the willow tree in center park on a full moon". Sam stopped in front of the man, the room absolutely charged with tension despite how ridiculous the "rules" sounded.
"There were three rules that were made the day the Fentons set up shop in Amity. They were jokes when they first started but everyone and their dog new them as law by the time we moved here."
Sam's voice lost it's hard edge as she started to list. "One, if you need a hand, get a Fenton. There is no family in Amity more willing to help then the Fentons". The Room lot some of its tension as Sam huffed a laugh. " these rules are not limited to Amity by the way". The man (Jason really should get a name) rolled his eyes but still nodded in agreement.
"Two" Sam's soft smile became a mean looking smirk. "Don't not ever, and I mean ever. fuck with an angry Fenton". Sam's smirk seemed to grow as the disbelief showed on the faces around her.
"I'm serious" she had said. "The number of times Tucker and I had to drag Danny away from a fight because someone threated one of us. Angry Fentons can be down right feral. The last place you want to be is in-between an angry Fenton and thier target."
Sam shook her head as she grabbed the empty dishes off the table, walking to the back. "Make a schedule if you wish, Tucker and I will help as best we can. But Danny isn't nearly as helpless as he seems."
"What's the last one" a different regular called out. Sam stopped, turning to face them. "Last one of what"? She asked.
"You said there were three rules, what's the third?" They asked.
Sam just shook her head before turning back to the kitchen. "Sorry" she called back. "But that one is an Amity only rule"
They had set up a schedule.
It was a good one. The guys on the list had joked it was more like a scheduled break time then a guard duty. The few small time thugs that didn't care about the off limits rule weren't stupid enough to attack with the number of known fighters they had rotating through.
Key words being small time thugs.
Almost a year and a half on the dot Jason could admit they may have miscalculated and Sam may have been pretty spot-fucking-on about calling her husband "feral".
The cafe has been packed. It was mid lunch rush on a cold day. Jason sat in his usual spot, a now four year old ankle bitter to his left. (What not stinky today? Your getting better)
It started with a loud bang, the sound cutting over top of the crowded sounds. The clanging of pots hitting the ground caused the cafe to quite down. others starting to notice something was wrong, several people rising to take a look.
A shrill scream silenced the cafe completely, multiple people drawing weapons. Jason pulled Ellie to his other side shielding her as the sounds of a fight started up. (The back!! they didn't have anyone guarding the back today). Jason did his best to take control of the situation without exposing Ellie.
"You three get in a close as you can, don't shoot until you know you won't hit Danny, the rest of you guard those without a weapon. If you don't have a weapon get the hell against the wall and the fuck out of the way!"
People were scrambling to get to thier spots as the three Jason had first ordered were already at the kitchen door. Henry (Jason had learned the names of the guys he had on shift) pushed open the door, gun at the ready, only to be pushed right out of the way as the God damn fucking JOKER of all people pushed past him, around the counter and into the room.
There was a moment of horrified silence as everyone registered who was in the room.
Jason was panicked. The green that he had never felt in the cafe before started to rise. Taking in the Joker as he heaved for breath looking far more deranged than standard. Fuck Bruce, Fuck the no kill rule, if the Joker had hurt Danny he was DEAD.
Jason prepared to shoot as quiet as he could. The Joker wasn't paying attention to him yet, but the sound of a cocking gun would definitely get it. (He shouldn't have brought his old single shot pistol. What was he thinking?!) He could not risk Ellie behind him. He could do this. He just had to be quick, cock the pistol, aim, fire.
Jason took a breath, eyes green and locked on the Joker. Breathing out he whipped the gun up, cocking it with his other hand, only to freeze as unholy SHRIEK sounded as the kitchen door SLAMMED open.
Danny M.other F.ucking Fenton, in all his 5'1" glory, stood at the kitchen door cast-iron frying pan in hand, glaring at the Joker with a force that made the worst of Bruce's batglares look tame. In the time it took Jason to blink, Danny had thrown himself up onto, and off the counter, into the Joker, in what Jason swears was was the most beautifully executed fully body flying tackle he has ever seen.
What followed after that can only be described as a fight between two rabid badgers.
There was hair pulling, scratching, biting,(Jason now knew where Ellie got THAT from) at one point in the fight a few poor schmucks had actually unfrozen long enough to attempt to pull Danny away from the crazy mass murderer, only to be hissed at. Honest to God hissed at.
It was wild, Danny at one point had the Joker pinned and was just going town. (for someone so small he had a nasty looking punch.) He counted at least two chairs being thrown, three tables, and one cup. Danny even took a whole chunk of hair out. (It was still there on the floor, no one wanted to touch it.)
The fight didn't end, so much as move on when the Joker finally managed to throw Danny off long enough for him to run. He actually ran. away. from DANNY. The same Danny who after getting his footing saw the fucking JOKER running away. Scooped up his frying pan and ran AFTER him.
No one in the cafe moved. No one knew what do. They had seen fights ok. They had seen alot of fights, but the level of absolute FERAL that they just witnessed was a new level. Even more then that people were trying to align the sweet, happy, looks like he couldn't hurt a fly Danny with the I maybe possessed by a demon with rabies Danny that just took a literal bite out of the Joker.
They stayed frozen until Danny came back to the cafe. Smiling like he did normally everyday, Danny had taken one look around the cafe, apologized for the scare, and asked if there was "anyone willing to help him move the four men in the kitchen that defiantly need medical attention out" and "not to worry about the blood stains he would deal with those after he changed."
Jason himself was still partly dazed when Ellie spoke up curiously from behind him. "Mama did you kill the mean clown man?"
Jason (and everyone else in the cafe) turned to look at Danny.
Danny who had stopped at the bottom of the stairs leading to the house.
Danny who's hair was a mess, clothes rumpled and torn.
Danny, who's "I'm not small im fun-sized" apron, was splattered with red, and who's favorite frying pan matched.
Danny, who smiled back at them and made the same sentence that normally brought relief, sound like a threat.
"He'll live".
Well that was way longer then I meant it to be. Have you actual chapter? At 3am? cause I could not stop writing? Sorry for any mistakes but i am to tired to catch any more xD good night all!

This idea sort of burst out of me like Alien so it's unedited. There will probably be more.
In short, Cas picks up on the fact that Danny is pregnant at a Wayne Gala and have the right idea but the wrong context.
Masterpost
------
Danny was barely holding it together and really he had been for a long time. It had sort of been fun and games at first when he became a hero. Sure his accident had hurt like hell but he'd sort of repressed that and for real? Lunch Lady? Box Ghost? Even Skulker was sort of a joke and he hasn't actually felt threatened. Sneaking around behind his parents backs and sneaking out with his friends had been fun. It had all felt like a game at first, and then somewhere in there things had gotten very real.
He'd known he couldn't count on his family to protect him but they couldn't even see Vlad was a threat. And he felt like he had lost the last of his innocence when he saw the clone Vlad had made of him melt. He hasn't been in time, he had panicked and he had only managed to save a couple by taking them into his own body to shield their still forming cores. Ellie and... should Danny name the other one or would he name himself when he was ready?
He kept touching his stomach over where he could feel the little balls of his mirror children hovering just below his own core. He was so tired all the time as they relied on his energy, he was eating more then ever and he knew his family was worried. He didn't think he could hide this and he couldn't predict when they would emerge. What if they did in front of his parents? They definitely wouldn't react well. And Vlad kept trying to use this against Danny. Promising to look after him and the babies if he was really insisting on carrying them, as if Danny could rip those tiny 'lives' out of himself now.
And no matter how many times he tried to tell his parents that Vlad was bad news, that he creeped Danny out and made him feel unsafe they wouldn't listen! Dad didn't even hear him and mom made sympathetic noises and then told him to bear with it for Jack's sake because he didn't have many friends.
So of course when Vlad had asked if 'Daniel' could accompany him to a gala in Gotham his father had agreed! Even his mother had agreed when Vlad promised it would be educational and safe! And here Danny was, hanging on by a fucking thread in a suit that felt uncomfortably tight around his middle, having just escaped being paraded around as Vlad heir like a particularly expensive watch. He was behind the snack table having piled a plate as high as he could and scarfing it down before Vlad could find him again and scold him for being rude. He hadn't noticed yet that a family of dark haired socialites kept giving him worried looks. A young woman with dark eyes signing frantically to a man with blue eyes and a dimpled frown.
It was the man who slid up carefully next to Danny trying not to startle since he seemed to have genuine food aggression.
"Yeesh kid you seem like you're starving! All those fancy Hors d'oeuvres are fun but not very cooling and I feel like I'd be a poor host if I didn't offer you something more filling! If you'll come me to the kitchen I'm sure our family butler would be happy to whip something up for you?" The man said with an inviting some that did nothing to sooth the way Danny's hackles raised instinctively.
He was about to say no on reflex when he spotted Vlad heading towards them with an expression like a thunder cloud. Danny's back went ridged and the other man followed his gaze with a frown. "You know what ya that sounds great let's go now!" Danny said dropping his half full plate on a nearby tray and dragged the stranger away with him as Vlad shouted after him.
"Daniel come back this instant! Unhand mister Wayne! Daniel this is unacceptable!"
'Mr. Wayne' took over leading them and spirited Danny through a back door as a bubbly blonde intercepted Vlad and a small woman slid in behind them like a shadow.
"So, Danial I assume?" The man asked, amusement crinkling around his eyes as Danny grimaced.
"Mr. Wayne I assume?" Danny returned, unaware of the way one arm was protectively wrapped around his stomach, but the girl noticed. It was Dicks turn to grimace.
"Okay ya, I go by Dick. What about you?"
"Danny," he said not reacting to the name, he'd heard far stranger. "And what about you?" He asked Cas, startling Dick a little because she was doing her 'shadow thing' and not many people would have noticed her.
"That's Cas, she has a hard time talking sometimes," Dick explained as Cas materialized and gave Danny a reassuring smile and wave.
The teen harrumphed but he did follow them down to the kitchen where Alfred was drinking a cup of tea, staying well clear of the foolishness upstairs. "Ah, hello young masters," Alfred he said, glancing between the three with a raised brow. Though the two who knew him could see the way his expression softened when Danny shrunk in on himself. "What can I do for you?"
"Hey Alfred do we have any leftovers from dinner or something filling we can whip up fast? Danny here is too hungry for just the fancy font for upstairs." Dick asked cheerfully.
Alfred raised his eyebrows again and looked at Cas who was standing behind Danny. Glancing at Danny to make sure he wasn't looking she grimaced then touched her stomach and mimed holding an infant.
Alfred's expression turned stormy for just a moment then smoothed. "Of course we do, Why don't you make our guest comfortable and I'll see what I can do. Do you have any allergies young man?" Alfred asked and Danny shook his head mutely.
"You're the best Alfie!" Dick said, hovering a hand over Danny's shoulder rather then actually touching him as he leas him towards the comfortable breakfast nook.
The boy seemed tight lipped and gaunt, his eyes flicking around them as if he expected a threat to pop up at any time. Dick slipped into the booth across from him. Trying to think of the best way to ask this kid how... why, and who hurt him.
Cas has stayed in the kitchen, but not for long. She came to them with a tray of mugs moments later and slipped into the booth next to Danny. Gently she took his hands and pressed the warm mug unto them. He blinked and focused of it, as if on autopilot he lifted it to his lips, Cas keeping a hand on his elbow to steady him as he drank.
The warm comforting drink, and hand on his arm, presence by his side as Cas slid imperceptibly closet and closer till she was pressed against Danny's shoulder, felt like they were taking him apart from the inside. Thawing out the cold numbness he shielded himself behind. Half way through his tea he glanced up, at the worried blue eyes so like Jazz, so worried and warm.
He put down the mug suddenly as a sob shook his body. Cas wrapped her arms around him and pulled him close, cooing comforting wordless little sounds as she let him bury his face into her chest and just sob heaving, exhausting outbursts of repressed emotion.
"Are the babies okay?" She asked and he froze, his breath catching in his throat. She clicked her tongue and rocked him gently. "Okay, okay, not in trouble," she promised.
"They- I don't know, they were so weak, I’m trying, but I don't know if I can keep them alive." Danny sobbed lifting his hands to cover his face.
"The stress can't be helping," Dick pointed out, climbing across the table like it was nothing to sit next to them and rub Danny's back. Danny gave a little hiccupping hysterical laugh. "Do you have support, or like, do you know your options?" He asked awkwardly.
"I'm not getting rid of my babies! I don't care if the man who made them is an obsessive creep who drugged me! I love them they're MINE!" The feral protectiveness seemed to startle Dick even as Cas continued to make soothing sounds.
"Your choice, only yours," she promised. "Have help?"
Danny sniffled and shook his head. "Safe?" Another shake of the head.
"The man who... did this?" Dick asked as delicately as he could. Another hysterical laugh.
"I've tried! I've tried to tell my parents he's a creep, he's dangerous but they don't listen! My dad thinks he hung the fucking stars, mom says he's harmless. They don't believe me! I-I can't tell them about the babies. They'd make me get rid of them or worse! I can't." Danny sobbed and Cas soothed.
"Okay, okay, you don't have to." She promised. "You stay with us, you and babies safe, never have to see him again."
"Ya right. Wait, your serious? What" Danny asked, pulling back and looking at her with wide bloodshot eyes.
"She's very serious young master," Alfred said as he approached making Danny jump. there was a hard set to the old man's jaw and steal in his eyes that left no room for questions as he set a plate of eggs, sausage, and fruit in front of Danny. "Master Bruce has a foster license and is a mandatory reporter. I'm sure once he hears even a fraction of this he will insist you stay. I will prepare a room for you. Am I to assume the man who's shouting demanding your return upstairs is the source of this distress?"
Danny swallowed and nodded, Alfred nodded back and paused to rest a gloved hand gently on Danny's hair before walking away briskly.
"Eat," Cas said, nudging him gently to let go of her. "As much as you want. Still hungry? We raid Tim's secret cereal stash."
"Gasp! You know where it is? You've been holding out on me?!" Dick demanded with exaggerated betrayal and as the two started to banter Danny ate. He was glad of the distraction, of not having the attention on him as he devoured the healthy, and nutritious meal the butler had made for him. It had been a while since he'd had a good home cooked meal, it made his core feel warm and he could feel the two little echoes as his hummed.
The babies were happy too, he didn't believe these people could keep him safe from Vlad really, but this was nice. Maybe he would let them try, get a few more good meals, a respite, and maybe... maybe his parents would finally notice that something was wrong and actually stand up for him?
That was probably wishful thinking but he could hope right? there was no harm in that.
