Separatists and Western Media

This came about because I saw an ask @communistkenobi got that I wanted to expand upon and it got away from me.

The Separatist movement is an interesting aspect of Star Wars that is often commented on in ways that conflate the multifaceted reasons behind the movement. It also plays into a trope of popular western media that is used to demonize any group with opposing politics stronger than a wet napkin.

Sigma interacting with his co-workers in talon (with his pills):

Sombra

Sigma: Unh? Oh Hello my friend! I haven't notice you there.

Sombra: Oh! Yes! I finaly made it work.

Sigma: I'm afraid i don't follow. What did you made work?

Sombra: It's a old device from the old times on Dorado. I found on a junkward with only It's hopes and dreams to keep it alive. It's a camouflage exo-skeleton that went missing after that accident of transportation to the moon.

Sigma: That was indeed a terrible incident. It's a queit a riddle of how in the many odds that could've happened.

Sombra: For the brigth side, i gain this little one. Look: It's filled with nano bots, they are soo tricky to control though, too many and too complex even with my current technology; imagine back then when i didn't had none of this! Needed like ten years just to hack 100 of them and on the stage that i found it i was already thinking that it was imposible to make it work. But oh man! Más vale manã que fuerza.

Sigma: Outstanding! And that's one marvel of engineering that Horizon was caring, and as you said: Complicated. I unfortunately had little to no contact with this kind of technology, i only saw when It's was being refined, years away from the current time. Seeing it on this stage shows how your handwork really improved after your studies.

Sombra: Learned with the best.

Sigma: Well, thank you but to be frank you're queit the prodigy yourself. I do not believe a admirer of the systematics of relativity is queit, eh, sharp to thought the control ofd sub atomic non-organic devices.

Sombra: It's true though. Without you, i wouldn't be capable of understand none of that right now, it took years just understand their basic composition. I own you alot, viejito.

Sigma: I appreciated.

Moira

Sigma: Could I go outside today, doctor?

Moira: I'm afraid i can't do that, you're under supervision after that surgery that we passed.

Sigma: Yes, yes, immune system weakend cannot be teased with a little clue of fresh air. But.... By the time that is passed here i don't feel stronger.

Moira: Your diagnoses said otherwise.

Sigma: I mean in pratice. My abilities seemed to increse and i showed more results while i was outside. Hitting the walls, going back in furth, this isn't a natural display of mines here.

Moira: We understand your struggle doctor, but for now you will be just the very thing that you are not craving right now, for the benefits of your health and the full sucess of the experiment. So we stay right here, yes?

Sigma: . . . I understand.

Doomfist

Doomfist: Doctor De Kuiper? The subject sigma, still... Instable? I see, i hope nothing unchracterist happens here.

Sigma: Hello mister Ogundimu! Never thought i would see you in flesh.

Doomfist: Unh hum... Charmed. (Takes a step back)

Sigma: i'm marveled for seeing you here. The doomfist! The title behind It's as heavy as It's sounds.

Doomfist: You know my title?

Sigma: And who doesn't? A man that in a battle killed his own master. Now, i know It's sounds harsh for but for pete's sake you are queit skilled, the cloath needed to be changed, in a way or another.

Doomfist: How do you know this?...

Sigma: Many events happens in many universes, universes that comes with mutiple choices of certain characters, and yours my friend, the universe singed your history and It's happens to be true in this variation. It happens time to time, i can't tell why!

Doomfist: Sure... It was good to see you, doctor de Kuiper. (Goes away)

Sombra: Got em'! Best actor ever.

Sigma: He looked very frigthen.

Sombra: That's what he get's for thinking he is high and mighty.

Sigma: You sure are happy with this.

Sombra: Yep! Oh man his face was priceless.

Sigma: Well, this could've got worst. But guess you handle pretty well.

Reaper

Reaper: Get off the way, doctor.

Sigma: How can one desmaterilize and still be asking for space?

Reaper: The very one is thinking in fill you with bullets. So, Get. Back.

Sigma: If a cologne of protozoa makes It's way for the mind of a fish. This means the fish is now passing for a evolutive process or devoluteve process?

Reaper: What?

Sigma: Has a ant ever thought that the universe that it got It's actually just another particle on the grand scheme of things?

Reaper: Have you lost your goddamn mind?

Sigma: purpose has purpose?

Reaper: (grunts) just get away from me. (He dissapers.)

Sigma: Finally peace. (Smiles.)

Widowmaker

Sigma: (singing)

Widowmaker: Could you please shut up?

Sigma: Oh! Why? It's beautiful day today.

Widowmaker: We wipped out a battalion of soldiers.

Sigma: Oh... So you still knows what compasion is?

Widowmaker: Nothing beyond a distraction.

Sigma: So Gerard was in the wrong since the start?

Widowmaker: What did you say? Did sombra made you say this?

Sigma: No, i just heard about it. Did you miss him?

Widowmaker: It's none of your bussines.

Sigma: If you do, Doctor O'Deorain could've failed on her experiment, if you don't that means she is good on her work, and i will trust her. Which is it?

Widowmaker: ... Don't cross my line of sight again, doctor.

Sigma: I know my answer now.

i will never forgive popular UT fanon for using chara as a scapegoat in the genocide run and making "sans recognizes them and attacks them on sight regardless of what run they're in" headcanons so pervasive.

mostly because "restless spirit of a long dead child who's obsessed with the concept of cosmic retribution and facing consequences for your actions" + "guy whose job is just that but he treats it on par with his hot dog sidegig" is potentially one of the most hysterical dynamics you could come up with

What Bugs Me About This Tweet Is That He Didn’t Die To Save The Wizarding World. Harry Did That. Snape

what bugs me about this tweet is that he didn’t die to save the wizarding world. harry did that. snape died because a snake bit him. i fail to see how his death was a sacrifice. but oh no, he was so “brave,” bullying children all those years. some people try to defend that with “oh he was trying to protect harry and this and that and bla bla bla” but harry was not the only one he bullied. he made hermione cry! he tried to poison neville’s toad! sorry joanne, snape is a devil. thank you for listening to my ted talk.

on catholicism and severus & tobias snape

if you're going to expect a very well-thought out essay about this, please let me stop you right there. it likely won't be :)) but this was prompted by comments of people on my hc of catholic!snape and a (long) conversation with @dementedlollipop on discord that just spurred so many Thoughts.

going under a cut coz i don't know how long this will be.

so. i have made several allusions via drawings and stuff that one of my (main) hcs is that snape and tobias are catholic. i don't think i explained properly before why it makes so much sense; i tend to just spazz, but i'll really try to be articulate this time.

first, the background:

i grew up catholic, but the culture i was raised in was also catholic, so it permeated the value system i and everyone else around me knew. people put a high value on respect, filial piety, obedience, family, etc. all the stuff you watched on Derry Girls. that's exactly how it is to grow up in catholic culture, at least where i'm from. american catholic culture is slightly different because it's placed in a very secular context so it has a lot of caveats. it's very different if you grow up culturally catholic, and in a country that still largely runs on religious practices.

how this relates to the snapes:

i always find it interesting to figure out why characters act the way they do, especially if there's very little said in canon about them. tobias was one of the characters i was so interested in, because i found his situation so unique.

he's a muggle, as we know, and it was alluded to that he had neglected and/or abused his son and/or wife. yet, as far as we can tell, he also didn't leave them. it was likely that by the time severus met lily he already knew both eileen and severus were magical. why did he stay with them, if he disliked magic? surely it would have been easier if he had just left and started over elsewhere?

it's not just tobias, but also severus; how he acted, his thought processes, why he did what he did. it all felt very familiar to me, and it all routed back to traditional catholic values, and the way that i know how you just can't shake them off, no matter how hard you push against the faith itself.

the things that feed the hc (and which also leads to more hcs):

- severus was born in 1960, which means tobias was born in the first half of the 20th century, sometime between the 20s and 40s. (i like to peg it as the late 20s, because i also like to hc him being a ww2 vet, not only because it fits the context but also like father, like son -- severus is also a soldier);

- tobias living through the first half of the 20th century means he would have lived in an england that was still 'religious' in a sense, wherein religion was still a big part of their culture (i mean it technically still is, but i would imagine more people back then were still practicing it actively). he didn't strike me as anglican or protestant tbh because he seemed too traditional, and by that i mean he had a strong sense of duty to his family, strong enough to not break his marriage vows and to stay despite the presence of magic;

- now, magic has always had a weird placement in catholicism. i've never really had issues with religion vs harry potter. we were never banned from it, however i do know that back then, the very concept of magic was something that scared the bejeezus out of the common folk because it was "the devil's work" (and yes, i know this belief is wrong and is rooted in oppression by the church, but this is not what we're discussing rn). the repulsion tobias feels about magic i feel is therefore something that's rooted in religion;

- it was dementedlollipop that pointed this out but severus wearing his mam's blouse can also be read as tobias not even minding this was happening. how could this happen in a hypermasculine society like a lower-class town in 60s england? if tobias had really cared about it (because shame, because what will the neighbors think of you running around looking like that), severus would have worn his da's shirt rather than his mam's, if only to save himself from possible punishment. but he didn't. we know, however, that he was neglected/punished as a child. in this case, the possible reason he would have been was precisely because of magic. now you tell me why an ordinary muggle man in this setting would even care that his child was magical? as poor as they were, he could have exploited their magic and tried to make money from it, but this type of behavior was never mentioned. it just strengthens the hc that tobias was more bothered by something else more fundamental about the magic: that his son was not just different, but different, in all the ways he knew was wrong;

- "he doesn't like anything, much" sounds like a description of a man resigned to his fate, that is, being in a marriage he couldn't get out of (divorce isn't allowed in the catholic church, and annulment is expensive and has many conditions before it can be granted, if it will be granted). the abuse we know that happened could be him retaliating to the situation by lashing out in a horrific manner whenever the final thread snapped;

- catholicism is very big on ethics, and places value in things like fortitude, temperance, piety. this isn't just taught to you via a book; people already behave like it and it's ingrained in your belief systems, so you also learn it by example. suffering is also a big thing in catholic culture. there's virtue in suffering, in subjecting yourself to copious amounts of guilt and making up for it via penance like giving yourself up for a higher cause. i mean, that already is peak severus imo, but it also works for tobias, because where else could severus have learned it? children don't just pick up this stuff on the fly; it's learned from one's parents and backed up by a very solid values system;

- we then have tobias, a born-and-raised catholic, with a wife and child whom he suddenly finds out can do things that have always been taught to him as "satanic", and yet he can't leave them due to his marriage vows, due to his sense of duty that's been drilled into him since time immemorial, and perhaps because he also does love them. it's his family, after all. severus is his only child. a child he had initially thought was blessed, a gift, but is now damned, and it's his fault, as a father. he must have done something in his life to deserve it, but what? why would god even curse him this way? but then god gives his hardest battles to his strongest soldiers, and so he will see it through. this is his burden to bear;

- now we have severus, who's raised on the same values as his father, but tempered by his mother's secret stories of the wizarding world. he would have adored his father, i think, prior to his magic being discovered, because tobias would have doted on him. they would have been avid churchgoers at some point, at least severus and tobias, and he would have been baptized in the local parish. he'd have gone to mass, would have heard it in latin, and would have learned latin enough to know it like a mother tongue. he would have recited prayers and hymns with his father in latin too. this would have given him a leg up in the wizarding world, as far as that language was concerned. it's no wonder he could create spells;

- imagine the heartache that would have occurred the moment tobias realized he was not at all normal. the rejection that would have happened, how tobias would have silently and swiftly cut off all affection, and young severus would have been left to wonder why, until eileen explained to him that his father's world and their world just could not mix, and it's always been the way with muggles (hence the somewhat anti-muggle sentiment he alludes to in canon when with lily). but severus would have also probably secretly thought it was all his fault;

- now this: even if he had rejected his father and the muggle faith he had been raised on just before going to hogwarts in order to make something new of himself, it wouldn't have worked. ironically, the wizarding world has living embodiments of the concepts he had learned at his father's knee and in the church, the same things he would have been trying to avoid and forget: the concept of souls was proven with ghosts, and eventually, horcruxes; voldemort dying and resurrecting proved power over death. the afterlife was also proven by harry's testimony from the graveyard when voldy got resurrected. voldemort himself, with his giant snake, would have also been like the living proof of satan and sin;

- i think severus would have been terrified at the realization that oh shit this stuff could actually true, and it would have pushed him towards religion, not away from it, if only to study it more. i mean i can only imagine him having a ton of theology books in his study just to read up on the subject matter. it would have also made the concept of him losing his soul upon killing dumbledore very very real and all the more terrifying, because then the sayings of him being doomed for all eternity may actually come true;

- (thou shall not kill. thou shall not kill. thou shall not kill)

- like his father before him though, he would have accepted his fate like a good soldier, and would have accepted the suffering that came with it. he also probably felt deep, deep guilt all throughout, because tobias had been right. he was exactly what his father had always been frightened of: damned in this life, and now the next. and it was all his fault.

Jeeves, of course, is a gentleman’s gentleman, not a butler, but if the call comes, he can buttle with the best of them. It’s in the blood. His Uncle Charlie is a butler, and no doubt he has picked up many a hint on technique from him. He came in a little later to remove the debris, and I asked him if he had had a good time at Brinkley. ‘Extremely pleasant, thank you, sir.’ ‘More than I had in your absence. I felt like a child of tender years deprived of its Nannie. If you don’t mind me calling you a Nannie.’ ‘Not at all, sir.’ Though, as a matter of fact, I was giving myself a slight edge, putting it that way. My Aunt Agatha, the one who eats broken bottles and turns into a werewolf at the time of the full moon, generally refers to Jeeves as my keeper. ‘Yes, I missed you sorely, and had no heart for whooping it up with the lads at the Drones.’

part 1/part2/part3/part4/ part5 the end!

hehe really this comic it started out of nothing.. i kept going and i just couldn’t stop.. and is mostly improvisation so that’s why is kinda weird with the pacing and what is the focus of the story; which is just Sans and Alphys being friends. (yeah it was not meant to be Salphys but if you wanna take it that way i don’t really mind lol)..

also there it might be some nonsense because i didn’t know exactly what to write in some panels like science stuff or whatever and also bad english here and there … XD so, sorry about that…but i hope you liked it ^_^ and thanks for reading it!

reason no. 264 why sans is smart af

Yoooooo okay I realized something. So we know that shopkeepers can’t be attacked. It isn’t a game function; it’s literally not possible.

When you threaten Gerson, you get:

image
image

Shopkeepers/NPCs that sell items are invulnerable to attack due to an in-universe rule that you can’t initiate a fight with anyone who is actively selling something. I say actively because technically you have the option to sell items all the time at different shops (although not every shopkeeper will agree to buy), but monsters will still attack you and bosses can still pull you into a fight. If you’re smart, like Gerson, you can use this weird mechanic to keep yourself safe and alive. You can avoid hostile encounters, and thus damage/death, by becoming a peddler.

And who do we know in this game that a) has dangerously low HP, b) keeps a tight lid on powers that could otherwise be used to protect themselves, and c) is constantly found selling things?

image

Sans is literally keeping himself alive by selling random stuff.

people often claim that oh, papyrus is too naive, that’s why he got killed in the no mercy route, etc, but like

if we only take record of the people who’ve completed the no mercy route, then of course 100% of the time he’s dead. but i’ve seen countless people get to papyrus’s non-fight and abort their NM run because either they couldn’t reject his genuine offer to help them become a better person, or they killed him and got so guilty that they reset.

a LOT of people found themselves unable to bear his kindness. it’s not insignificant, i think. sticking to his morals and offering a killer the chance to redeem themself really did end a no mercy path before the world was destroyed, at least a few times.

This might be a weird idea but

What if Sans’s telescope prank wasn’t only a prank, but also a test?

Normally, the kind of prank where you trick someone into getting a mark on their face is a stealth one. The embarrassment is through them not realising the mark and going on with their lives until someone else decides to tell them, or they look in a mirror eventually. They also realise they were the ones who participated, unknowingly, in getting a silly mark.

This Might Be A Weird Idea But

In this scenario, everyone basically yells SANS and tries to call him on it, resulting in him joking about a refund. But there’s no way Frisk would know about the eye blotch. The normal run of the joke would be for Frisk to obliviously carry on until they find a mirror somewhere. Instead, most people confront Sans immediately.

Maybe he was testing to see if we, the player, really were there. Frisk could’ve turned on him and called him on the prank… despite having no way to know they’ve got a pink eye. That’s what WE know. We outed our existence to Sans.

Wait sans canonically has an accent??

Wait Sans Canonically Has An Accent??

He does! Now, it’s a pretty subtle thing because UTDR characters usually have very little in the way of phonetic accents (like, the knight chess piece NPC from Deltarune has a southern accent but you can mostly only tell it because they don’t say their final ‘g’s and call Kris “horsie”) but if you pay attention to his speech, you’ll be able to pinpoint some little hints Sans has a few speech habits going on. For one, he tends to shorten the word “you” to “ya” and other similar forms of it:

Wait Sans Canonically Has An Accent??
Wait Sans Canonically Has An Accent??
Wait Sans Canonically Has An Accent??

He also refers to the player character as variations of “buddy” and “pal” a lot.

Wait Sans Canonically Has An Accent??
Wait Sans Canonically Has An Accent??
Wait Sans Canonically Has An Accent??

But what gives it away as being (what I, with my limited knowledge of American accents think it is, at least!) a cartoon Brooklyn accent is his usage of “capiche” and “forgeddaboudit”, heh.

The most striking thing about Papyrus (aside from his limitless positivity) is the fact that it is literally impossible to die in a fight against him. Even Toriel, who starts purposefully missing you once your health gets low enough, can accidentally kill you, but Papyrus? It is literally impossible. Papyrus has incredible control over his power! Wow, what a great and impressive skeleton. And, even though he could probably deal some legit damage to you on the murder run, his only action is to spare you, because he’s heckin worried about this little emotionless murder child.

A lot of people like swap aus where Sans is the one that dies and Papyrus is forced to shed his naivete and face you going all-out, which makes sense, but also, Papyrus is just so. Papyrus. I feel like if Papyrus had to be the final murder-run boss, it’d be more like, “After losing Sans, the world seems like a different place. I can’t imagine what you must’ve gone through for you to see the world the way you do.”

He only has one attack, but it’s a really long one and powerful one (kind of like Sans’ before his ‘special attack’), plus he talks during it, which would be pretty distracting. whenever he gets your hp down to 1, combat automatically stops and you’re ejected back into the judgement room. if you try to talk to him without healing, he’ll just say you’re too hurt - a gust of wind could knock you over! after you heal at the conveniently placed save point and go back to fight him, he has stuff to say about how you don’t have to be alone, you don’t have to do this, you might think there isn’t any good in you and it’s too late to change, but there is and it isn’t! After a few of those, he’ll talk about Undyne and Sans, and they always tried to help him, even when they thought he wouldn’t notice. He’s got a ton of stories about that. After he says his piece there’s an option to either fight or don’t fight, and every time you pick fight he looks disappointed, but he goes all out. He’s always able to be spared.

if you survive his attack, he goes down in one hit. his last words would probably be an apology, even though he tried really hard he still couldn’t show you a better path

one of sans’ unspoken, but actually rather prominent flaws is overprotectiveness, and I think it shines through exceptionally well in the king papyrus ending.

One Of Sans’ Unspoken, But Actually Rather Prominent Flaws Is Overprotectiveness, And I Think It Shines

sans deliberately lies to papyrus about the death of his friends in an attempt to protect papyrus’s innocence.  The problem here?  Well one is that Papyrus isn’t innocent.  He’s a grown adult, a king now, in fact.  He needs to know the seriousness of the situation if he’s ever going to rule properly.  But beyond that,

not telling papyrus that his friends are dead isn’t just irresponsible, it’s downright cruel.  We already know that papyrus had very few friends to begin with, and now?  He probably thinks the one friend he did have has abandoned him.  And while I doubt sans consciously intended this, the fact remains that sans’s overprotectiveness has hurt his brother, in a way that sans doesn’t seem aware of (probably because papyrus purposefully hides this from him, as shown when he waits for sans to leave before he says this).  Sans lies to his brother in an attempt to protect his positive outlook, but in the process of doing it he’s effectively forcing papyrus to internalize his sadness for the sake of what he perceives is best.  He does not allow papyrus to judge for himself what is best for papyrus, because he’s so scared of ruining that positive outlook he relies so heavily on.

and this is not the only instance of sans hiding information in order to “protect” the people he cares about

One Of Sans’ Unspoken, But Actually Rather Prominent Flaws Is Overprotectiveness, And I Think It Shines

while maybe this one’s more understandable, it’s still wrong.  Eventually toriel is going to find out what happened, keeping the information from her does nothing except prolong both sans and toriel’s suffering.  But sans doesn’t think about this, because in his mind, he’s protecting her.  He equates keeping loved ones safe with keeping them in the dark about anything that could hurt their feelings.  Which is… not healthy for relationships at all.

Everyone seems to focus on how sans’s lies hurt sans, but it’s also important to acknowledge that his lies hurt the people around him.  It’s why pacifist endings are more important to sans than he even realizes in-game; a chance at the surface means a chance to recover, a chance to recover means sans stops relying on the (not so) blissful ignorance of others in order to deal with his own issues.  It means his relationships begin to be built on trust, rather than lies and internalized emotions.  And I think that’s better for everyone.

Ive Been Thinking A Lot About Papyrus Lately N How The Fandom Looks At Sans And Papyrus’s Relationship

ive been thinking a lot about papyrus lately n how the fandom looks at sans and papyrus’s relationship and like.. i know most people would just take this line as a joke, why wouldn’t they, pap is trying to feed a fucking rock, but like… i think some of it rings true. papyrus is a big naive sweetheart, sure, and sans is always looking out for him, sure, but ppl tend to take that to this extreme where they see it as like “papyrus is too silly and childish to take care of himself and sans has to be the big protective older brother even if pap doesn’t rly notice”.

but…. papyrus actually does rly well for himself. look at him. he’s living a life most young adults could only dream of. he’s got a clean room, a nice house, a good work ethic for a job he’s very passionate about, a positive outlook on life, high self esteem, and even a racecar bed. who doesn’t want a racecar bed? i don’t even like racecars and i’d kill for a racecar bed. like, yeah, he’s kind of got an unusual way of doing things and doesn’t always pick the smartest option, but apart from the occasional possessed murderchild coming after him with a knife, he can take care of himself just fine.

and…. sans knows that too. sans doesn’t try to intervene with every little thing papyrus does, even when he messes up. he mostly just cheers him on from the sidelines and tries to make him happy in all the little ways he can. and sans is a lot stronger and more knowledgeable than he lets on, yes, but in contrast to his brother he does a really shit job of living a healthy lifestyle. he’s messy, lazy, he slacks off at work and overeats and has generally completely given up on being happy. and im saying this as a severely depressed person myself, i get it. i love sans for those qualities because i relate. i just think people give him too much credit, and papyrus not enough.

people talk about how papyrus is the thing that matters most to sans, and he puts most of his remaining energy into making him happy, which is true, sans loves his brother more than anything. but papyrus isn’t something he needs to protect. if anything, i think sans actually envies him sometimes, for being so unwaveringly confident and soft-hearted in such a bleak world. they take care of each other, balance each other out. they’d probably be a lot worse off without each other, but papyrus isn’t a fragile baby and sans isn’t his babysitter. and it matters to me (again, as someone who Relates) to be able to see sans as somebody who’s pretty bad at existing in general, and for people to be able to recognize that positivity isn’t inherently childish… them’s my two cents
