I got held up with schoolwork I procrastinated and wasn’t able to finish anything for my meow meows birthday (i am a horrible vile person, evil even), but here’s a WIP for the spirit…

I LOVE SANJI!!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel like Shonen Manga should have the rival character double as a love interest.

A lot of this discourse made me realize that the problem has been that the rival character should be female more. Like Shonen Jump editorial will encourage male leads to be promoted as the face of the series but why not let the rival/lancer be a girl?

I mean, that's how a lot of shows and movies I saw growing up did it.

Like it often does come down to either blindspot on the part of the author (male or female, sexism rots all of our brains) or editorial too concerned with demographics like a girl becoming less appealing when they take the battle damage the boys will often get.

Even so, the Love Interest in and of itself often shows the hand of the author when they’re not allowed to be too much outside of that. But when they’re packaged with another archetype like rival or nemesis or best friend, they’re more of a likelihood that the audience will be able to see how our protagonist would fall for them.

Especially with rival characters where there’s a clash of ideologies along with the protagonist learning that there will always be somebody to surpass and the rival learning that their dogmatic stance doesn’t got to be the end-all-be-all.

If the hero guy needs a clean heterosexual romance to appease editorial, making the rival the girl they’re gonna be set up with or the best friend would make it all the more smoother.

Basically, what I’m saying is that if Sasuke was a girl, then NaruSasu would be guarunteed an endgame.

Buuuuuuut this often clashes with certain unconscious or not biases that male authors and readers have about female character in action based storytelling. MistereFusion did an excellent breakdown on Videl’s tournament battle, how it was written and how it’s been received.

Namely how there’s an unfortunate mentality that’s the girls are either to be ejected quickly with a knockout lest their “physical qualities” are compromised or they are brutalized to show that they’re outta their depth and to create an air of seriousness all of a sudden.

How be y’all my name is Jaxson. I love me some SDS (though I honestly like Nakaba’s other series Kongoh Bancho a bit better but thats just imo) and i also love art and specifically drawing. I mainly do SDS fanart but I do fanart of other series like FMAB, RWBY, Marvel, Violet Evergarden, BtVS, Battlestar Galactica, etc.

The fantastic SmolMeliRoll is a part of the Zine as both an artist and a writer! We are incredibly excited to have @smolmeliroll producing two original pieces for the Zine. Her artwork features her unique style and painting style that is both playful and interesting. Meanwhile, her stories are always unexpected and warm. The following is an example from the fic I Would I Would I Would (under the pen-name DepressoxEspresso):

“All I’m saying,” Ban hicc’ed, his words finally clear enough to be made out, the ale already working towards turning his mind to straight mush, “Is I would love to see the cap’n drunk for once in my life.”

The group paused their muttering, interest peaked. Of all the years they had known Meliodas, none of them had ever seen the man even come close to buzzed – let alone lose his wits in intoxication. Of all the rarities the sin of wrath had, being drunk was at the top of the list - followed closely by losing his temper (ironic considering his namesake) - missing an opportunity to grope Elizabeth, and missing out on a chance to promote his bar.

“Never going to happen.” King slurred, a tankard hovering just under his lips, his cheeks visibly red from the substance within it.

“Come on King,” Ban stood up, wobbling dangerously on his unsteady legs, “It’s unfair that every time we do this he has to miss out on the fun!”

Arthur moved to catch Ban just as he stumbled over his own feet, righting the towering sin and gently easing the man down to a much safer sitting position. “I’m sure Master Meliodas has plenty of fun regardless of his intoxication level.” Arthur noted as Ban pulled down on the young king’s shirt, nearly causing him to lose his balance.

“Nonsense. There are but four earthly pleasures us men can partake in.” Ban drawled out, his words slurring together as he gave his drunken philosophy. “Women, sex, money, and losing your wits to some good ass booze.”

Arthur blushed at Ban’s vulgarity, gaping for something - anything - to say in response –and instead resorting to chugging down the nearest stein and avoiding the topic entirely.          

“I for one,” Merlin chimed in, her liquor barely touched, “think it is a splendid idea. Great for educational purposes.”

“See!” Ban pointed towards the mage, his face lighting up, “Someone who knows not to miss out on a good thing!”

“An interesting prospect,” Gowther’s monotone voice a stark difference against the slurred and unsteady tones of the other sins. “How do you propose we go about it?”

On cue, all heads turned towards Elizabeth, who had been perfectly content with silently sipping away at her own drink, listening to the banter without getting involved.

Heya! I’m Annie! I’m super excited to be apart of this zine! I’ve been drawing digitally for about 9 years now and writing for about the same time, but this is the first time I’ll be contributing to a project like this. We have lots of great artists and writers contributing to this zine and I look forward to everyone seeing it!
