Johnny Depp has joked about shooting Black people, killing animals, that being a celebrity dealing with paparazzi was like being raped; has called women numerous misogynistic slurs; called the mother of his children the c-word and extortionist; claimed to be Native American to promote the Lone Ranger and isn't actually Native American; said he'd buy Wounded Knee and didn't; attempted to piss on his own star on the Hollywood walk of fame and joked to his staff about leaving shit for Amber to find/clean up/blame on their dog? he made Marilyn Manson a godfather to his kids, went Nazi paraphernalia shopping with him and told him he wanted to re-enact a sadisistic movie about kidnapping teenagers as like their man cave; underpaid his staff; gotten into bar fights; assaulted crew members; paid off his ex-wife who he left a phone message saying the n-word too many times to count; dated Winona Ryder when she was practically under-age; shot his friends ashes out of an air canon; "joked" about drowning, burning, and raping his ex-wife's corpse; fantasized about her body being in the back of a car trunk; admitted to chopping off his own finger; admitted to kicking Amber on an airplane after being rocked out of his mind and body on drugs; snickered/taunted the lawyers/made jokes about having Tourette's/made jokes about abuse/rolled his eyes/drew during the trial where he was claiming to be the victim....
Meanwhile, Amber has maintained Johnny was a great person when he was sober and a monster when he was out of control on drugs, said Johnny sexually assault her, said Johnny insulted her, said Johnny isolated her, said Johnny hit her, said Johnny often told her the only way out of their marriage was death; told friends and family about what was going on; took pictures of said abuse; has audio recordings; has text messages; and had the audacity to leave the person capable of everything above to come out and say she was a public figure representing sexual violence and domestic abuse.....
and so many of ya'll really feel Johnny is in the right. OKAY.
My dad and I once had a disagreement over him using the adage "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger."
I said, "That's just not true. Sometimes what doesn't kill you leaves you brittle and injured or traumatized."
He stopped and thought about that for a while. He came back later, and said, "It's like wood glue."
He pointed to my bookshelf, which he helped me salvage a while ago. He said, "Do you remember how I explained that, once we used the wood glue on them, the shelves would actually be stronger than they were before they broke?"
I did.
"But before we used the wood glue, those shelves were broken. They couldn't hold up shit. If you had put books on them, they would have collapsed. And that wood glue had to set awhile. If we put anything on them too early, they would have collapsed just the same as if we'd never fixed them at all. You've got to give these things time to set."
It sounded like a pretty good metaphor to me, but one thing I did pick up on was that whatever broke those shelves, that's not the thing that made them stronger. That just broke them. It was being fixed that made them stronger. It was the glue.
So my dad and I agreed, what doesn't kill you doesn't actually make you stronger, but healing does. And if you feel like healing hasn't made you stronger than you were before, you're probably not done healing. You've got to give these things time to set.
