This is J.R.R. Tolkienย readingโand singing!โexcerpts from The Hobbit andย The Lord of the Rings,ย and it is exactly as amazing as it sounds. George Sayer, a friend of Tolkienโs, helped make the recordings while Tolkien was visiting himย in August 1952, two years before The Lord of the Rings was published. (It doesnโt have that information under the youtube videos, but I was able to find out the context from Tolkien Gateway and the Tolkien Library.)ย These areย so wonderfulย and Iโm so glad they exist! Itโs absolutely delightful to hear the Professor reading his own stories. You have not lived until you have heard Tolkienโs Gollum impression, or his Treebeard voice, or him speaking in Elvishโฆnot to mention reading The Ride of the Rohirrim!ย Yes, he actually recorded that and it is literally the best thing ever. Itโs amazing to listen to him reciting the Song of Beren andย Lรบthien (just like Strider told it to the hobbits!), and everything else, and Iโm so, so, so glad that these recordings were made. This is a treasure trove!ย I want more people to know about this!ย

Finally, this is George Sayerโs note on the recordings, which I transcribed fromย this radio broadcastย because I thought others would like to read it.ย
