It really is nice how obviously fond Elphaba is of Glinda right off the bat in the movie, with What Is This Feeling showcasing how much Elphaba enjoys their little feud. For the first time in her life, someone's judging her for her, rather than her skin or her magic. Glinda doesn't give a shit that she's green, she's mad that Elphaba's taste in clothes and decor clash so severely with her own! She doesn't care that Elphaba could accidentally kill her if she got too angry, she's too busy being upset that Elphaba keeps minorly inconveniencing her! How refreshing that would be, to meet the most annoying person in the world and discover that her own narcissism has caused her to be the only person who sees you for who you really are. Of course Elphaba would take the hat seriously as a gift -- has anyone other than Dulciebear ever gifted her anything? Of course she would gamble her own self-confidence at the Ozdust -- at worst, Glinda's ego is so massive that she would never allow her mortal enemy to be the butt of someone else's joke. And in the best case, well, Glinda recognizes how important she is to the one person that she knows has no one. The only one who gets her, the only one who has ever understood her, standoffish and rude the way a stray cat is before it finally follows you indoors.

It's a real shame this story couldn't be anything other than a tragedy, huh?

leroux described raoul de chagny as being as pure as a virgin, remarkably shy, a poet who liked lofty music and listening to stories about fairies dancing in the moonlight, who had blushed when christine kissed his cheek,,, so like… why are half you still taking love never dies raoul as canon??? don’t listen to andrew llyod webber - raoul is soft and gentle and full of love

the actual reason I consume mediocre media is because I have bad taste. the deeper secret pretentious reason is because I think there’s something very revealing about bad media that you don’t get with good media. when you watch a poorly executed plot point unfold, you see the machinery behind it. you see the gap between what’s actually on screen and the true goal the author is striving for. if it’s particularly awful, you can even measure just how poorly mismatched the author’s skills are with the story they’re trying to tell you. watching a poorly executed narrative play out feels like you’re discovering something, because you see all the wiring and guts underneath that better authors hide from you, in the same way that movies hide boom mics and books make you forget you’re turning the pages. if a story is good and executed well you just see the story. but I want to see the guts and wires!

love never dies is atrocious in a multitude of ways but i still love the idea of post-canon Erik and Raoul trying to figure out how to raise Gustave together in some sort of tragicomedy sitcom-type setup

the funniest part about Love Never Dies is the implications it has for the canon of the ALW Phantom of the Opera. because what do you mean Raoul turned into an alcoholic gambler, lost all of his money, found out Gustave wasn't his son, watched Meg shoot Christine, and STILL had the funds and energy to go back to the Paris Opera House to purchase that silly monkey like 12 years later.

why would you torture yourself like that

god Raoul just…loves Christine so much. Literally all he wants is for her to be happy and alive. Genuinely tragic that most of his Final Lair lines are hidden underneath the Erik/Christine harmonized argument, because he's out here saying lines like "for pity's sake, Christine say no! Don't throw your life away for my sake!" and "Why make her lie to you to save me?!” and "Christine, forgive me! Please forgive me! I did it all for you and all for nothing!” while being strangled to death.

Like...do you all realize that he was asking her to let him die so she could be free? He was literally willing to be tortured/killed by an obsessive stalker so that Christine could be free and happy. It's the only REAL personal desire he shows in the whole musical besides asking for her love: for Christine to be alive, healthy, and happy.

And his Big Duet with Christine backs this up! In "All I Ask of You," Christine tells Raoul that "all [she wants] is freedom/a world with no more night," implicitly rejecting Mr. "Music of the Night" and the terror he brings. And Raoul, because he loves her, swears to give that to Christine as best as he's able. The only things he asks of her in the entire song is to love him ("love me, that's all I ask of you" // "Then say you'll share with me one love, one lifetime") and let him allow her to feel safe and free ("let me be your shelter" // "let me be your freedom"). The entirety of "All I Ask of You" is just….*chef's kiss* honestly.

But of course words are cheap. All the sweet nothings in the world wouldn't prove his worth as a suitor if he wasn't willing to walk the walk. But he is. Raoul spends the rest of the musical proving what he told Christine in that song: that he really is the genuinely sweet, loyal, and protective man who would go to the ends of the earth for her, including being willing to sacrifice his own life so she can have both her freedom and a life without being trapped by the "night" (Erik).

Kind of crazy that so many people genuinely want Christine to end up with the man who groomed her, stalked her, harrassed and manipulated her, kidnapped her on two separate occasions, killed two of her coworkers, was going to force her to marry him against her will, tried to kill her fiancé while guilt-tripping her into thinking it would be her own fault (“buy his freedom with your love! Refuse me and you send your lover to his death!”), tried to kill her (with the chandelier), and generally made her life a living hell for at least a year instead. Lol. Hard pass.

foreshadowing done well makes me go feral like there’s NOTHING better than getting to the end a book or an important storyline moment and realising that the author laced information so intricately into their writing that weren’t noticeable upon first read but when you read back sections they’re light giant red flags like wow writing is amazing

I can't find my post but anyways re what I said about how jean valjean's relationship with his own body is for the most part never really explicitly touched on but there's huge amounts to be extrapolated from it, I think it's really interesting how physical & related to the body the descriptions we see him give are when he's thinking about confessing & then confessing to marius at the end of the book. obviously there's the more literal one:

text reading " At the moment when he turned round, he perceived that Marius was watching his walk. Then he said, with an inexpressible intonation:
'I drag my leg a little. Now you understand why!'"

where the physical state of his leg proves that he was in the galleys and is sort of a physical manifestation of his status as a convict, but there's also, e.g.:

text reading "Should he take those innocent hands into his tragic hands, with a smile? Should he place upon the peaceful fender of the Gillenormand drawing-room those feet of his, which dragged behind them the disgraceful shadow of the law?"
text reading "'How horrible!' should have touched you with my elbow, which you have a right to dislike, I should have filched your clasps of the hand! There would have existed in your house a division of respect between venerable white locks and tainted white locks;"
text reading "it is hideous to approach those who are healthy, and to touch them in the dark with one's ulcer."

I just think it's really interesting that his feeling of his own taintedness is so physical that it's externalised into his body like this in his descriptions -- particularly when it comes to touching other people
