THE TRAGEDY OF HAYAKAWA AKI (insp by this post)
I'm going so crazy about Aqua making Ai's signature pose. Everyone always compares him to his dad and Ruby to Ai but I'm much more interested in the other way around.
Ruby currently seems to have the same hatred for the entertainment industry that Kamiki does (I assume, if he's targeting famous actresses). I could be embarrassingly wrong, but Aqua's stance on the industry is that it's corrupt but he can destroy it, whereas Ruby/Kamiki's is "I'm part of a corrupt system and I've become corrupt too). I wonder what Ai thought of it?
Back to Aqua and Ai, the manga keeps implying that one of the objectives of the movie is to fulfill Ai's true wish (which is, I'm guessing to be loved for herself, secrets and all? No clue though). Aqua, in a sense, is acting as Ai's vessel now, looking beyond revenge and working towards accomplishing something that would actually make her happy. Revenge is still a priority though.

depression creature
no thoughts, head empty, just mysterious small town au
grian is a journalist who got into some trouble after digging too deep into a missing persons’ case; pearl invites him over to stay in her small town since he needs the peace and quiet. he thinks itll just be a simple vacation, but finds the town and its inhabitants to be far more than they seem.
I just gotta say, Denji really is just built different than other horny anime protagonists. No matter how many times he assures himself (and the audience) that he wants sex and pleasure, he pretty much never asks for those things outright from anyone.
Power finds out about his goal and makes the bargain of her own free will, and ultimately Denji learns that transactional intimacy is an unfulfilling trap.
Himeno offers the tongue kiss as a reward, which Denji accepts, but doesn’t ask for. She then sexually assaults him, and Denji ultimately rebukes her advances, where other protagonists might not have.
Reze is also the one seducing and pressuring Denji into taking things farther, but Denji is NEVER the one pushing her forward, simply happily following her lead.
Even with Makima post Gun Devil arc, Denji doesn’t even ask for his original wish (having sex with her). This time it might be more due to the recent trauma he’s feeling and his wish to be numb and happy, rather than fulfilled in his own goals, but either way he DOESN’T ask!
And now, with Asa, he could have asked for a kiss or a grope, but he didn’t. He asked for a second date. A chance to grow closer and learn more about this person.
Regardless of Makima’s generally untrustworthiness and manipulative nature, I think one of the biggest lessons for Denji (and the teenagers reading this story) is her first lesson on intimacy. Everything sexual feels better when there is trust, desire, and understanding from both sides. This is ultimately why Denji’s “relationships” keep failing - there is little to no honesty from his partners, so no trust or understanding can really come from them.
Also, as exemplified in his relationship with Power, Denji discovers that there can be intimacy that is distinct from lust. He can be naked in the bath with her, but not feel turned on at all, because he isn’t just a horny stereotype, he recognizes the humanity of women and how to be close with them without just lusting after their bodies.
Idk, I feel like this is a little all over the place but damn, I love the care with which Denji has been crafted - idiosyncrasies and all. It’s what makes him so human, and so compelling.

Last bit of art for now bc I worked hard.
Can’t stop thinking about how clever this is:
How Fujimoto is illustrating the emotional distance between Asa and Denji physically, by putting space between them, then heightening that with the speech bubble?!
Asa’s posturing is creating a wall. She's more concerned with spitting out these facts rather than getting to know Denji, or showing any vulnerability herself. She’s leaving no space for them to say anything else or to understand each other.
Even the facts themselves reinforce this distance, serving as an allegory for the situation. Indirectly, they reference Asa and Denji’s traits and secrets.
How anemones can go a long time without food or proper care? Denji grew up hungry, without anyone to look out for him.
How anemones actually house anemonefish? How they survive alongside each other in a symbiotic relationship? Couldn’t be that both Asa and Denji also have symbiotic relationships with the devils living inside of them!
How there are lots of types of starfish but not all of them are star-shaped? There are lots of devils/fiends and they don’t all look like what we might expect. Asa and Denji similarly don’t know that the other is a fiend by appearance.
How starfish can eat practically anything? Uhhh. Denji. No further explanation.
How they’ll rip off their own arm to survive a predator? Asa is currently sacrificing her own morals to turn Denji into a weapon and escape Yoru. (This could also be possible foreshadowing where Asa will sacrifice herself/her physical body to save her morals instead — idk only time will tell). And let’s not forget how Denji sold his body parts to pay off his dad’s debt. Also the ripping out of his heart.
How they strip starfish down to eat them in the Kumamoto prefecture? Asa has to get to know Denji beyond surface level to create a good weapon out of him (which she’s currently avoiding doing now). Also also, to put it mildly, Denji's stripping down of the Control devil.
Alternatively, we could also say that the speech bubble is bridging the space, but with nothing but pretense.
Anyway. More than excited to see where this all goes. I can’t freaking handle it 😭!!
old sketchbook cats!
yumyulack truly is the funniest character concept on that show.
He is an alien bounty hunter. He is 15. He killed a whole bar full of neonazis. He gets night terrors and has to sleep in his parents bed. He shrinks people and imprison them for his own amusement, he is still bullied every day at school. He went to hell and bullied every demon there, called satan a big bitch. One of his dads calls him yummybear
No one is doing it like him
designed two posters for The Mandela Catalogue, really happy how they came out.
Since its that time of year again, I’ve been thinking about Over the Garden Wall, and I think one of my favorite things about it is that, other than the fact that they’re lost in some strange woods, their problems are so normal. Like, in so many shows the problems are things like “both of my parents are dead and their last wish was for me to do this really emotionally taxing life long quest” or whatever, but Wirts biggest problem is that he cant tell a girl that he likes her, and that his mom somewhat recently remarried, and his half brother is kind of annoying in that little kid way. They’re just such normal problems, and it feels like its one of the few heroes journey sort of tales where the main character is just some kid. Hes not some chosen one, hes not the most popular kid at school, but hes obviously not outcast because pretty much everyone who sees him in the Halloween episode greets him in a friendly way and try to include him. He’s just a normal kid, but he still has these unique little traits that make him interesting, like that he plays clarinet, and writes poetry, and is kind of a pushover but is also really passive aggressive when he wants to be. Its just such a good show, and every time I rewatch it I find another little thing that I love about it.
The fact that Bill Cipher left such an impression on us that we compare every villain to him is amazing sometimes.
Whenever we're introduced to a new villain, we immediately compare their power, motive, and personality to Bill.
Because Bill was fucking revolutionary. A purely psychotic, two-dimensional, manipulative, demon who could possess people, go into their dreams, rearrange their physical appearance, alter the fabric of space, time, and matter, and just straight up murder someone with the snap of his fingers.
In a kid's show.
He threatened to throw the body of a 12-year-old boy he was possessing off a water tower, threatened to kill that same 12-year-old along with their sibling "just for the heck of it", destroyed his own dimension, said the words "I've got some children I need to turn into corpses", thinks pain is hilarious, and so much more.
Bill Cipher, everyone.
unrequited love for siblings is the saddest thing you could ever portray on its own but over the garden wall said what if the kid is like the sweetest most kindhearted five year old you could imagine and he loves his brooding wistful bitch of an older brother sooo so much and enough to offer up his life in exchange for his brothers when his older brother saw him this whole time as just an annoying step sibling at best and a nuisance at worst and you cant be too mad cause hes also a kid and then when he finally figures it all out it saves them both, the decision to leave lethargy and the rot of melancholy behind and take the love he already has as proof the world is worth it after all and aaa a a. aaaaaa. aaaaaaa. aaa. what a sweet story. what a lovely thing.
I dont miss vhses or vcrs but I do miss how personal seeing a movie felt back then. Like, physically going to a Blockbuster or a Hollywood Video, wandering the aisles and looking at hundreds of cases and the art that decorated them, the actual choice of weighing it, "do i want to see this, or this?" not knowing if the movie would be there next time you visit. And then going home and having to physically put it in, maybe you have to rewind it cuz whoever had it last is a dick or maybe you're trying to fast forward through trailers until you get to the movie. It made watching a movie at home feel more like an event.
Streaming is like, beyond convenient and so is piracy (yarhar maties), but it largely feels so impersonal, you dont really have to strategize, you dont get that weird judging a movie by its cover affect, and a lot of streaming specific movies are just so bland, it feels like the magic of watching a movie has been stripped away and murdered, now movies just feel like novelty time sinks.
I've really enjoyed going to a smaller not amc not regal movie theater chain because seeing movies like nope, like black phone, like crimes of the future in these places that care about the aesthetic and ambiance really feels like "oh, the magic isn't dead, marvel and Netflix are just ruining it"
And idk the point of this rant. Just thoughts.
