It’s quiet here, and across the street from his shopfront is a little patch of grass and a little Japanese maple tree. Shiro lives in the studio apartment over the shop, and so he always has a view of that tree, day and night—he watches it change from vibrant green to deepest red as the seasons change and thinks of home.”

After losing his arm in the Air Force, Shiro buys a flower shop. Keith’s tattoo shop moves in next door, and Shiro comes back out of the shell he’s built around himself, little by little.

(Well that’s a lie, there’s foreshadowed angst but only if yoU SPOT IT, ME AND MY TRICKS HAHAH!)

There are also no season 5 spoilers in here, only season one episode one, lol. You are all safe to read!

warnings: oh god uh…female pronouns used… mentions of death what else is new… foreshadowed angst if you can spot it, but like honestly it’s 90% fluff

Shiro let the car roll to a stop in front of the park, his anxiety finally overtaking him, hands locked on the steering wheel, starting to shake. His day had gone to shit in threes; he’d been distracted during a flight simulator, forgotten to fill out vital mission reports, and finally, was uncharacteristically late to a Kerberos briefing, which had the general miffed and hostile through the entire thing. He was stressed beyond measure; he was really starting to wonder if this mission was a good idea for him. Shiro swore his hair was turning grey.

He didn’t know how long he had been sitting in his car when a tiny knock was heard at the window. He slid his eyes over, only to feel a reluctant smile worm across his face when he saw five-year-old Lilly smiling toothily at him from the window. You were holding her up, smiling softly at him, eyes already knowing he had a bad day. That’s what best friends were for. His heart leaped in his chest when he saw you, pattering happily. Like usual, he just squashed the feeling down and saved it to ruminate over later.

He’d known you for years; from that fateful day your fathers had introduced you, you with a scowl on your face as he held out his hand to shake. You’d hated him initially- his t-ball team had just beaten yours and you were unhappy about the fact- but once you’d discover your mutual interests aligned you’d been bound at the hip. Through years of school, you’d stood by him when he graduated top of his class at the Garrison; he was at your college graduation.

He’d been at your wedding as well, as much as it killed him to see you so beautiful and handed off to another person. But Shiro had made sure they were a top-notch human before he even considered giving his blessing, and even as he watched you walk down that rose petal strewn aisle, looking radiant and ecstatic, he knew you were happier than ever. That made patching the hole in his chest easier.
