If you use Tumblr on a web browser, you might have noticed us testing a brand new navigation on your dashboard in the last month. Now, after some extensive tweaks, we’ve begun rolling out this new dashboard navigation to everyone using a web browser. Welcome to the new world. It’s very like the old world, just in a different layout.
Why are we doing this? We want it to be as easy as possible for everyone to understand and explore what’s happening on Tumblr—newbies and seasoned travelers alike.
Labels over icons: When adding something new to Tumblr in the past, we’d simply add a new icon to our navigation with little further explanation. Turns out no one likes to press a button when they don’t know what it does. So now, where there’s space, the navigation includes text labels. Since adding these, we’ve noticed more of you venturing to previously unexplored corners of Tumblr. Intrepid!
What’s already been fixed? Thanks to feedback from folks during the testing phase, we’ve been able to make some improvements right out of the gate. Those include returning settings subpages (Account, Dashboard, etc.) to the right of the settings page instead of having them in an expandable item in the navigation on the left; fixing some issues with messaging windows on smaller screens; and streamlining the Account section to make it easier to get to your blogs.
What’s next? We’re looking into making a collapsible version of this navigation and improving the use of screen space for those of you with enormous screens. We’re also working on improving access to your account and sideblogs.
That’s all for now, folks. For questions and suggestions, contact Support using the “Feedback” category. Please select the “Report a bug or crash” category on the support form for technical issues. And keep an eye out for more updates here on @changes.
@Fanfic writers:
My friend send me this link, is a series on a profile on Ao3 (tumblr) that has different tutorials to insert things to fanfics via html code, I thought I would share bc it’s really cool
Lists of tutorials:
How to make images fit in mobile browsers
This is a tutorial/live example on how to make large images fit on mobile browsers but remain normal size on desktop browsers.
How to mimic letters, fliers, and stationery without using images
This is a tutorial/live example on how to mimic the look of letters, fliers, and stationery (as well as other forms of written media) without using images. For all your epistolary fic needs.
How to make a “choose your own adventure” Fic
This is a tutorial/live example on how to create a "Choose Your Own Adventure" fic. While this has been explained before (see here), this particular tutorial shows you how to use a work skin to hide the next parts from the reader until they click through to get to them.
How to make linked footnotes on Ao3
This is a live example of how an author can create linked footnotes in their work with only a little bit of HTML and no workskins required. This is best viewed by clicking "Entire Work". While I've included the actual coding in bold and italic once you click "Hide Creator's Style", there's a more detailed explanation here.
How to change text on Ao3 when the cursor is hovering over it (or clicked on mobile)
This a tutorial/live example on how to have text change or appear once a cursor is hovering over it. Helpful for pop-up spoilers, language translations, quick author's notes, etc.
How to mimic author’s notes and Kudos/Comment buttons
Anonymous on tumblr: do you have a skin that would mimic the author’s notes and review/kudos buttons section from the end of a fic? the desired effect being that the fic could go on after the “end” of the fic, so after the author’s notes and review/kudos buttons
Here's a tutorial/live example to do just that, with some of the buttons actually functioning. I'll explain more inside!
How to wrap text around images
This is a tutorial/live example on how to align images to the left or right of the screen and have text wrap around them.
How to mimic email windows
This is a tutorial/live example on how to mimic email windows on AO3 without the need to use images.
How to make ios text messages on Ao3
This is a tutorial/live example on how to mimic iOS text messages on AO3 without the need to use images. There's also a chapter on how to have emojis displayed on AO3 as well.
How to make Customized page deviders
Bored with the default page dividers? This is a tutorial/live example on how customize your page dividers with no images needed (though I do show you how you could use images if you wanted to do such a thing).
How to make invisible text (That can be highlighted)
This is a live example how to make invisible text that can only be seen by highlighting the text. Tutorial is included in text, and you can always leave comments about questions you may have.
MOBILE USERS: Sadly, this probably won't work for you, since highlighting in a mobile browser is different than web. I've tried correcting this, but have yet to find a solution.
How to make a rounded playlist
Original coding and design is from layouttest. I make no claims for it, just tweaked it so it will work on AO3.
How to create notebook lined paper on Ao3
This is a live example of my AO3 skin that allows the author to recreate the look of lined notebook paper in their work. To learn more about it, you can find the tutorial here.
Sticky notes on Ao3 without using images
This is a live example of my AO3 skin that allows the author to recreate the look of sticky notes (aka Post-Its) in their fic. To learn more about it, you can find the tutorial here.
How to make deadpool’s thinking thinking boxes on Ao3
This is a live example of my AO3 skin that allows the author to recreate the look of Deadpool's thinking boxes in their fic. To learn more about it, you can find the tutorial here.
How to make newspaper articles on Ao3
This is a live example of my AO3 skin that allows the author to recreate the look of a newspaper article in their work. To learn more about it, you can find the tutorial here.
For anyone who hasn't seen them before, Hidden Search Operators are handy tricks you can use when you're either searching or filtering AO3.
summary: string is a generic way of explaining that you can search AO3 for a specific word that appears in a summary. You can do this from the search bar in the header, from the Any Field box at the top of the Advanced Search form, or from the Search Within Results box at the bottom of the filter menu.
Examples:
summary: Bruce
summary: "Bruce Banner"
summary: Bruce OR summary: Banner OR summary: Hulk
You need to put quotation marks around your search term if it is more than one word. The quotes make sure that the site searches for those two words together.
The other two operators listed work best in the Search Within Results box.
expected_number_of_chapters: 1 will return results where every fic has only 1 chapter currently posted.
You can use expected_number_of_chapters: -1 if you want results where every fic has more than 1 chapter currently posted.
otp:true will return results where there is only 1 relationship tag on the fic. If you want results where there are 2+ relationship tags (and no fics with only 1 relationship tag) then you can use otp:false
There’s some fluff, some smut, some angst, and some funny prompts all mashed up from a bunch of prompt lists I’ve found. Absolutely none of these prompts came from me, I just threw a bunch of ones I liked together.
“Come over here and make me.”
“Wait a minute. Are you jealous?”
“I almost lost you.”
“Wanna bet?”
“Don’t you ever do that again!”
“Kiss me.”
“It could be worse.”
“Looks like we’ll be trapped for a while…”
“You need to wake up because I can’t do this without you.”
“I’ve seen the way you look at me when you think I don’t notice.”
“Just once.”
“I think I’m in love with you and I’m terrified.”
“If you keep looking at me like that we won’t make it to a bed.”
“You heard me. Take. It. Off.”
“Wanna dance?”
“You fainted…straight into my arms. You know, if you wanted my attention you didn’t have to go to such extremes.”
“You did all of this for me?”
“I swear it was an accident.”
“YOU DID WHAT?!”
“If you die, I’m gonna kill you.”
“I fucking hate you”
“He’s dead, again.”
“It’s hard to get used to…” “what is?” “Being someone that someone cares for…”
“The first time you smiled it felt like the universe aligned.”
“It hurts…” “what?” “Loving someone who doesn’t love you…”
“Let me do this, please.”
you’re not as funny as you think you are
i’m just getting comfy
just because you can doesn’t mean you should
how don’t you know the difference between your left and right?
thank you for being in my life
text me when you’re home
you are such a nerd
why are you so cold?
stop laughing at me
you were put on this earth to give me a headache
you’re ticklish
can we go home yet?
you are a terrible influence
one of us is clearly smarter than the other
you need some sleep
how have you survived this long by yourself?
are you just quoting song lyrics?
i’m only here for the dog
sleep is for the weak
that was you?
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“What? I have never-”
“I do not have an answer for you.”
“In my defense, I really wanted to.”
“At least I didn’t break any laws.”
“What did you do this time?”
“How do we get out?”
“I don’t hate you.”
“Don’t call me that.”
“Just marry me already.”
“Did I stutter?”
“Did I just say that out loud?”
“H-How long have you been standing there?”
“I’ve never felt this way before and I’m terrified to be honest.”
“Is that what you call an apology?”
“Is there anything you want to tell me?”
“Somebody’s in love!”
“Can I hold your hand?”
“There is no way this much stupid can fit inside one person.”
“I’m never leaving…I promise.”
“Uh, am I interrupting?”
“I like you, like like you like you.”
“Be my Valentine?”
“Can I kiss you?”
“God, I love you.”
“You’re so fucking cute.”
“Stop being a fucking prick.”
“Do you want me to stay?”
“You’re my everything.”
“I love seeing you smile.”
“i’ve been thinking about you all day.”
“ i can’t get enough of you.”
“i like being close to you. you’re warm.”
“i’m not wearing any underwear. thought you’d like to know.”
“is this okay?”
“this is a one time thing.”
“you know where to find me.”
“you’re really good at that.”
“here’s my hotel room number.”
“don’t be shy now, sit on my face.”
“Wanna join?”
“Stop doing that”
“YOU SENT ME PICTURES OF YOU NAKED WHILE I WAS IN A WORK MEETING!”
“If I ask you to kiss me in front of all these people, will you do it?”
“Don’t go on that date.” “Why?” “You know why.” “Say it.”
“ i think i might be in some kind of love with you.”
“say you want me, and i’m yours.”
“you need a place to stay for the night”
“i want to taste you”
“i love it when you talk dirty
“if you interrupt me one more time— so help me god”
“if we weren’t in public right now i’d have my head between your legs”
“i don’t know what to do” “then let me teach you”
“i forgot my towel”
“this feels dirty” “that’s because it is”
“don’t cover you’re face, i want to see you”
“are you sure about this?”
“ive never wanted to fuck someone as badly as i want to fuck you rn”
“do you want help with that?”
“im going to fuck you until you forget that assholes name”
“bend over the desk love”
“is that my shirt?”
“my mother adores you.”
“is that a drawing of me?”
“i didn’t mean to say that but yeah, i love you.”
“i’ve never seen anyone look so cute and ridiculous at the same time.”
“stop looking at me like that!”
“i didn’t know you could sing.”
“you weren’t supposed to hear that!”
“you wrote me a song?”
“i’m not scared but if you are, you can hold my hand.”
“this isn’t adrenaline, i want to spend my life with you.”
“do you think of me when you touch yourself?”
“Take my jacket, it’s cold”
“My friends get annoyed by how much I talk about you sometimes”
“I’m not going anywhere”
“fuck you.” - “when?”
“no one’s ever made me feel like this.”
“here, let me help you.”
“we’re quite literally fugitives of the state.” - “so no pizza?”
“you’re insane.” - “people keep telling me that.”
“you’re pretty.” - “you’re drunk.”
“i told you i’d come home to you.”
“i’ll keep you safe.”
“i’ll spend a thousand lifetimes coming back to you.”
“i didn’t think it was possible to love someone this much.”
“please never stop smiling.”
“Touch yourself for me.”
“Shut up and take your pants off.”
“Wanna see what I’m wearing underneath all this?”
“Do you know how beautiful you are? It’s truly distracting.”
“How are you this perfect?”
“I’ve waited so long for this.”
“Would you just shut up and kiss me already?”
“Tell me what you want.”
“Could he make you feel as good as i do?”
“Are you trying to turn me on or are you really just that oblivious?”
“Just let me finish this/this level and I swear ill go down on you until you cum at least three times.”
“I haven’t even touched you and you’re already this wet.”
“Were you just masturbating?” “U-uh..no, I was just..” “Want some help?”
“Tell me again.”
“I really want to kiss you right now.” “Then do it.”
“I don’t care what you do just fuck me.”
“Stop distracting me.”
The fact that Microsoft Word has to be a subscription is upsetting. I already paid for it why do I have to pay again
If there was a way to run SUPER MEGA AD BLOCKER on this website I fucking would
Btw much as I love to make fun of twitter and reddit's business decisions, I have 0% trust in tumblr's management to not go a similar route so this is your gentle reminder that you should regularly go to your blog settings to export your blog. That's a fancy way of saying you can download a backup of your blog so if everything goes down you'll still have a backup of your posts & convos.
Rules: Send me two (2) tropes from this list + a ship and I’ll describe how I’d combine them in the same story.

I WANT FOR AO3 TO HAVE A FILTER TO TAKE OUT ALL THE FICS I'VE ALREADY READ CUS MAN I'VE READ A LOT
On May 3rd, Google released 8 new top-level domains (TLDs) -- these are new values like .com, .org, .biz, domain names. These new TLDs were made available for public registration via any domain registrar on May 10th.
Usually, this should be a cool info, move on with your life and largely ignore it moment.
Except a couple of these new domain names are common file type extensions: ".zip" and ".mov".
This means typing out a file name could resolve into a link that takes you to one of these new URLs, whether it's in an email, on your tumblr blog post, a tweet, or in file explorer on your desktop.
What was previously plain text could now resolve as link and go to a malicious website where people are expecting to go to a file and therefore download malware without realizing it.
Folk monitoring these new domain registrations are already seeing some clearly malicious actors registering and setting this up. Some are squatting the domain names trying to point out what a bad idea this was. Some already trying to steal your login in credentials and personal info.
This is what we're seeing only 12 days into the domains being available. Only 5 days being publicly available.
What can you do? For now, be very careful where you type in .zip or .mov, watch what website URLs you're on, don't enable automatic downloads, be very careful when visiting any site on these new domains, and do not type in file names without spaces or other interrupters.
I'm seeing security officers for companies talking about wholesale blocking .zip and .mov domains from within the company's internet, and that's probably wise.
Be cautious out there.
