Today’s Teaser (Sept 7, 2020)

FRIENDS. THINGS ARE HAPPENING. I’M BACK ON MY THEORIST SHIT AGAIN.

So I watched the clip several times, at varying speeds, and tried to transcribe what I heard:

[loud screech, metal on metal]

[crash, again seems to be metal on metal]

[hiss, as of steam being released]

[car engine revving]

Unknown Voice: Everything is happy…

[sound of a train going over tracks, faint train whistle]

Unknown Voice: [unclear] living his life to come through…

So that second voice line is one I couldn’t quite make out. The top two interpretations I got were “He’s living his life to come through” and “He’s giving his life to come too.”

I also snapped a picture of whatever flashed on screen in the darkness:

So you can’t see much here, but when I brighten it…

A door? When the image keeps moving, there are lights at regular intervals along the roof. Coupled with the sound, my guess is this is a train compartment, possibly in the style of Murder on the Orient Express.

Are we getting a new adventure? Possibly another murder mystery?

Such interesting developments, and with Halloween right around the corner…

Ohhh you can see some of the room!! So yes, this is either a train car or an entrance hall, and again, I’m leaning toward train car.

Deceit’s Name.

Okay, so there seems to be some confusion, but I wanted pitch in. Deceit’s name isn’t “Janice”. It’s Janus, after the two-faced Roman god of deception thresholds and decisions (this is an edit, i goofed and got some gods mixed up!).

Hence this pose: 

which is not only a fun allusion to swearing in in court (”I swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth”), but is similar to a typical pose in art for Janus the god:

The end of the world didn’t look anything like we thought it would. There were no fires. There was no screaming in the streets. No gunshots aimed at brick facades teeming with armies of the unruly dead, or extraplanetary life that had for some reason decided that humanity was to be systematically eliminated. There were no world leaders corrupted by their position into beginning nuclear Armageddon. No, it was nothing like that.

The end of the world was…quiet.

i love this as a theory! it makes a lot of sense, too. i like the idea that he didn’t intend to blend all of these stories, and that there was supposed to be a linear way to go through, but everything got jumbled together.

WHAT IF THE REASON WHY EVERYTIME A NEW EGO APPEARS IN THE HEIST, HEIST MARK HAS TO DIE SO ACTOR CAN SWAP ROLES--

He is, an actor after all. Considering that we've already pretty much gotten confirmation on the Markiplier = Actor Mark theory, and Mark does all the other characters himself irl, who says that Actor can't????

On top of that, this only happens in AHWM. In WKM, of course none of the characters have to spontaneously die in order for another to appear. In their original reality, they were seperate people.

But in AHWM, if this is TRULY Actor's game, it's possible this is the only way how to portray different characters and still be the "main character" or center of attention.

(i mean, he might, but its almost 3am im not gonna check, if i contradict anything canon pls tell me)

Another possible explaination is when all the timelines got messed up due to the artifact, all of Actor's stories, in whatevrr strange house wousey upside down he makes them in-- where of course, he plays the lead get intertwined?

A pirate who sails the sea for treasure, A noble heartbreaker adventurer, a remorseful prisoner

These are all stories that more or less focus on ONE Person. One person and the things they do.

And adding onto that, Dark and Wilford don't chase off Actor in some way. Dark simply transitions to a hallway after Actor just, vanishes

and Wilford shows up after you rewind.

On Today’s Unus Annus Video!

So today Unus Annus tackled the idea of artificial intelligence, and I got really excited and wrote a text wall comment that’s undoubtably going to get buried there, so I thought I’d post it here for anyone who’s interested! Posting it under a cut because HOOO BOY it’s a long one.

tl;dr AI is super cool and scary and much closer to being a thing than we think it is. Signed, a nerd who did way too much research for her scifi book.

Hi! I actually did a TON of research into the mechanics and ethics of AI when I was writing my first novel in 2018.  Be prepped for a text wall dump of cool AI info!

So you're actually hitting on one of the biggest conundrums of artificial intelligence technology, which is, to quote the wiki, "If an AI system replicates all key aspects of human intelligence, will that system be sentient"? At that point, there is significant debate over who would own the rights to the system, or whether there would be a way to determine that at all. This point in history, where it becomes impossible to distinguish between an AI and a human being (AKA, the first machine to pass the Turing test) and in fact, the AI surpasses human intelligence, is referred to as the singularity (Originally coined by Scifi writer Vernor Vinge). The majority of the debate comes from what to do in the event of the singularity, which is taken by many to be a when not an if. Do we trust that the machines we make will trust us? Or do we stop them before they get that far because they might consider us a threat to their existence and wipe us out instead?

Lots of Scifi writers have tackled this idea in their works (including me!), but one of the most famous solutions is the one proposed by Isaac Asimov in his short story "Runaround", which was published in 1942 (this story later became part of I, Robot, which is where you've probably heard the rules before). Asimov instituted in his fictional robot-filled society three basic rules:

1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. 2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. 3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.

Asimov's laws have been a huge part of the discussion around real scientific research into the capabilities of programming and machine learning because people see them as a way to safeguard advances that we make. But they also present the problem of not seeing robots as equal to humans, which could cause serious stress in sentient robots.

An interesting dive into this is Sophia, the world's "first robot citizen" from Hanson Robotics. Sophia isn't truly sentient, but she's the closest thing we have right now, being able to learn and react on her own without constant input from her research and development team. She can even make facial expressions that mimic real emotional responses! The trick with Sophia is that she recognizes that she isn't a human, and is, in fact, an experiment. She is designed to be okay with this and has even expressed excitement about it (which, like, amazing, a robot that can express excitement?!). If she were to ever say that she does not wish to do an interview that her team wants to do though, would she have the right to say no? What if she asked for her image to be taken down from a certain site? If she, herself, decided she no longer wanted to make public appearances? Would she have the right to do that, and would it be morally problematic to reprogram her to consent? Where does she cross the line from simulated sentience into real, self-contained sentience?

It's the same problem you talked about with owning your own image. If we as people don't know where we stand on that, what can we say about the machines we create and their ownership of themselves? No one has steady answers. It's all very interesting, and legitimately concerning, but also fascinating. I'm excited to see what happens next...if also a little worried.

Okay I’ve just watched the end of the video. I’m a transcriptionist, so I thought I’d give a try at actually just transcribing what I hear as I hear it, then work it out from there. So I did that twice with the clip between “If you liked this video, then-” and it cutting to black with “END” scrolling by.

Now like I said, I just transcribed exactly what I heard, playing it at half speed to make sure I got everything. I noticed that a couple of these distinct phrases sounded like words, so I made some guesses as to what those words were. I tried reversing it to see if it made more sense that way, but no dice.

amniverands = “anniversary”?

esanafram = “is in a frame”?

Again, I tried to write down what I heard, but this time I didn’t stope the audio at all and just wrote as it played (again, at half speed), and got fairly similar results. However, I heard the ending differently playing it all at once, and so my guess changed for what it meant.

So let’s talk about “What? Where am I?” Jack or whichever ego we’re watching today is clearly disconcerted to suddenly find himself recording, as if he’d been doing something completely different before and then just blinked and was here.

Now why does that sound familiar?

It’s interesting that this theme is continuing, and I’m curious to see where it goes from here, if it goes anywhere at all.

See something I really really adore about Chase (the video) is that it’s incredibly big and cinematic, but also fascinatingly personal. Chase (the character) is so well acted, Jack does some genius things with his characterization! The car scene gives us a good idea on how he handles stress (bottling up and deflecting until it’s overwhelming and he breaks) and the scene at the cairn gives us a look into why he handles it that way (mother died when he was young and so he is left struggling for affection and in relationships...at least that’s how I took it). 

But this scene? The rooftop? It gives us Chase in an entirely new crisis. When he has no idea what’s happening and no agency over his situation. Does he immediately start running? Hide? Shout for someone to hear him? No. He looks. Assesses the situation, getting as much info as he can. Chase isn’t good with emotional conflict, relationships, everyday life, but he’s got a handle on the strange and bizarre. Why? 

What happened to Chase to make him so calm in the face of something so strange?

CHASE was a such a beautiful cinematic piece. I love geeking out about direction, movement and framing in movies, and the way CHASE is shot, especially the scene right after he’s teleported, is just so great.

I’m a fan of both, and I kinda see them as an evolution? Like Anti started out wild and glitchy, but he’s slowly learning to control his...form, I guess? better than he did before, so he can be silent and menacing. He’s done playing games and is getting down to business, whatever his main business is now.

Okay question for everyone,

Do you all like the silent, menacing, Anti more or the crazy, chaotic glitch?

For me personally, I like the silent version more. Why? It's way more terrifying. With the other one, you know exactly what he's thinking and what he's going to do next but with the left one, he's way more unpredictable, way more sinister. He could easily kill you without you even knowing.

So I just created an AO3 page (Kittenbedtimestories) and it’s only been up for a day with my old fic on it, and people are being so nice?? Like I’m 100% about to cry with how sweet people are being about these random old stories I don’t think much about. I wrote them for fun, just because, and I’m so happy that people like them. :)

Looking back on CHASE I noticed something. 

The scene where he suddenly ended up at the parking lot and looked around, it’s clear he noticed he didn’t have his whiskey on him. But I think he may have lost something else. 

Before he looks at his hand that held the bottle, he feels his front pocket:

and then looks to his hand, his palm shaped more as if he’s mining hold a phone and not a bottle:

At first I thought he was checking to see if he still had the photo, maybe to get a gage the time he had lost or gained: was he thrown back in time or forward?

Then I checked:

The photo came from his back pocket. Not only that his front pocket is bulged and rectangular, like a phone. 

Chase lost his phone at some point in ‘transporting’. 

This is an observation and although I have my thoughts as to what it could mean, they’re half-arsed and sleep deprived. If anyone else has theories to what this could be, feel free to mention. :)
