Well, I read it in 6 hours, give or take!
It was really gripping, the characters were all really distinct and relatable in some way. Some of them were really surprising and there were some neat parallels to other Games and characters in them.
So much bird, flower and snake imagery, it was a bit much at times.
Haymitch’s Reaping ceremony was brutal, not at all what I expected, but very fitting for his character.
All the nods to other characters throughout the series was fun, though maybe a little overdone.
I liked the full-circle aspect of the plot and the character connections.
The mentor situation played out in the opposite way that I thought it would, and I thought it was a bit unlikely/unrealistic, but maybe it was just because it was a Quarter Quell that it happened like it did.
It was interesting to see the evolution of the Games since TBOSAS, and I felt some of the events from that were mirrored/echoed in this book.
I will elaborate more once more people have finished it and don’t want to avoid spoilers.
But overall, it was a great read and I think it will make a fantastic film.
There’s a channel here that often does marathons of SVU with some sort of theme, and today is Carisi! The tagline is something like “Here’s a nice guy who never finishes last” and I think it’s actually called the “Be careful Carisi” marathon! 😂😭🫶
That sounds like a fun watch! I am currently on Seadon 20 of SVU and think Carisi is fantastic! He’s a great brother, a good friend ( going to the Knicks game with Fin, that shows how close they are and how well they get on) and apologising to Peter Stone when he makes a comment about wishing his sisters would disappear.
His friendship with Amanda is precious, he’s good at getting her to talk about her feelings/be vulnerable , and he is so respectful of his superiors ( always calling them by their grade) and follows instructions to the letter. ‘I love how much he loved his family, wants to protect and take care of victims and gets angry with suspects/criminals, but without ever being abusive/crossing the line. Can’t wait to meet his mother, she definitely had played a big part in shaping his character.
Do we know what Carisi Sr’s job is? And it seems like they haven’t always had the closest relationship, but maybe it’s because Carisi Sr was often at work, so a bit like Stabler, who clearly loved his children but was almost always working and didn’t always understand them.
rewatching old criminal minds and suddenly I wanted a 1940s noir AU
Just rewatching the Season 2 finale, and am shocked that Gideon knows nothing about flowers, his descriptions ( kind of like a dandelion, with yellow floofy petals and a black dot in the middle, but not a weed) are dreadful, and Hotch has to talk him through his purchase ( chrysanthemums are not a good flower to buy for a date, Gideon!) and thank goodness that Gideon didn’t buy Garcia flowers when he had to be prompted to get her a gift when he invaded her office and really annoyed her in Season 1! It just makes my heart happy that Hotch knows about flowers, I can see him being really clued up about all the meanings ( yellow roses for friendship) as he was, canonically, a bit of a nerd growing up, with his coin collecting.
It’s also really poignant to see the first victim on the list, I got total Haley parallels/foreshadowing.
Gideon and Garcia actually getting on and him listening to her, explaining things to her in a non-patronising way and appreciating her input just warmed my heart. I like to think they got closer after the Tobias Henkel episodes, as they have a sweet moment when watching the video where he puts his hand on her shoulder and she reaches her hand up to squeeze his, so they are drawing comfort and reassurance from eachother because of their mutual affection for the person onscreen.
Bernie, Randall & Elliot all being at the hospital before Eli is great, even though he does have a good reason.
And another Grandson for Elliot but as yet unnamed. There's a little jeopardy with the baby being premature and Elliot mentioning that it's not ideal.
But we can't have nice things on this show and just as we have this nice moment of the family coming together and enjoying the new addition, we have Bernie mistaking Elliot for his Dad and the pain of that hitting Elliot.
Give this guy a break, please!
Hotch and Garcia’s friendship is so underrated. They appreciate and understand one another so well.
He makes sure she understands that he, under no circumstances, would ever want her to change. He’s aware of her cutting edges and hacking into places she shouldn’t and takes up for her every time she gets in trouble for it. When she gets shot, he doesn’t stay the hospital like the others, he’s out there busting his ass to find out who hurt her.
She understands he’s a little more guarded than the others and doesn’t appreciate the full brunt of her humor but they both give and take. She keeps track of his birthday and while she takes the time to remember it, she also doesn’t bring it up in front of the team. Knowing he wouldn’t like that kind of attention. She stays with him after his surgery. She makes him cookies when he’s hurt and keeps a level head during the bombing so that he can’t get proper help.
It’s easy to recognize that Reid is baby and Hotch let’s him get away with everything but Garcia is very much baby as well. How many times has he had to pull her out of whatever trouble she’s wiggled her way into? Then reassure her that he’s neither mad nor disappointed.
Hotch and Garcia are underrated characters so we miss so much of the subtle brilliance between them.

How do you feel about Carisi calling Liv “Lou”? Personally, I love it and think it’s so sweet! It feels (to me) like a very Carisi way of showing respect. I don’t think anyone else calls her that (?), which feels right. It’s like mustache Carisi, he’s gonna do his own thing. 😂🫶
I haven’t noticed him calling her that, but it’s sweet, even though Lou is not a logical nickname for Olivia. Ah, perhaps it’s short for Lieutenant! He’s very big on calling people by their proper rank, which is another thing I love about him. It is very Carisi, it’s sweet and I am sure it comes from a place of love.
