an interesting detail I noticed in twd 9x01 was that when they hung gregory it seemed like daryl was the executioner. its fairly brief but its implied that although maggie ordered the execution it was daryl that physically carried it out. ofc this turned into a long rambling post:

it got me thinking that from very early on he was the member of the group who was doing the dirty work. he gets called rick’s henchman by another character at least twice (carol in s2 and milton in s3) and for the first 9 seasons that’s objectively correct. in s2 when they were going to execute randall it was daryl that physically dragged him there even though rick was the one who planned to carry it out (he also took it upon himself to torture randall which likely feeds into the way he was perceived). he doesn’t make many of the difficult decisions but he does tend to undertake the more unsavory work that needs to be done.

it seems like part of this is that the other group members view him as a violent person who may have been doing similar things prior to the outbreak (not a totally unfair assumption based on some of the things he said and did in the first few seasons). despite ostensibly escaping the prejudices and assumptions the others have about him when he’s accepted into the group, it’s pretty clear that this perception lingers, especially with regard to group members who’ve known him since early on.

it’s interesting to me bc it’s not clear to what extent he fills this role because he’s the most willing to do it or because other people expect him to. did he volunteer to execute gregory or did maggie ask him to? was it just assumed that he’d do it? anyway I just think it’s fascinating that even though daryl developed immensely through the seasons to a certain extent he continued to play the same role (the violent enforcer to ricks leader) up until season 9 at least.

but who will brush the wings of the angelboys and trim the claws of the snakeboys and place on a hot stone the lizardboys and catch and release the fishboys and make terrariums for the bugboys and find caves for the dragonboys and pet the smooth skin of the sharkboys and feed raw fish to the mermaidboys and perform maintenance on the robotboys and find kindling for the fireboys and work leather for the horseboys and affix muzzles for the dogboys and provide ammunition to the weaponboys and blink lights at the planeboys, if not me?
