Toronto Off-Duty Officer and Brother Given Slap On The Wrist After Blinding Young Man
Ontario Superior Court Judge Joseph Di Luca delivered a verdict today in the case of an off-duty Toronto police officer and his brother, Const. Michael Theriault and Christian Theriault, who were accused of beating Dafonte Miller on December 28, 2016.
During the trial, Miller, 19 at the time of the incident, told the court that more than three years ago, in the early hours of the morning, he was walking with his friends in Whitby, Ontario when two men standing in a garage began questioning him. Miller said the two men started to chase him between homes before they eventually began beating him. He said Michael used a metal pipe, while Christian used his hands and feet.
According to Miller’s lawyers, his left eye was entirely dislodged and split into four, leading him to lose his ability to see out of this eye entirely and he also had trouble seeing out of his right eye. He also suffered injuries including a broken orbital bone, bruised ribs, broken nose and a fractured wrist.
.In a virtual court proceeding Friday morning, the judge found Michael Theriault guilty of assault, but not aggravated assault.
He was also found not guilty of attempting to obstruct justice in connection to the case. Christian Theriault, meanwhile, was found not guilty on both counts.

“Don’t you trust me?” Richie asked (y/n), bringing a small note titled ‘peace offering’ with him as he sat beside her in one of the classes they shared, “Like, at all?”
She just stared ahead at the board, and the teacher hadn’t even been in the class yet. Richie had been trying to grab (y/n)’s attention for quite a long time now, but all she did was ignore him. He looked down, defeated once again.
But he wouldn’t stop trying.
He saw her sitting in the library with one of her favourite books in hand. She was so immersed in reading that she never realised when Richie sat on the chair across her and cleared his throat, startling her.
Her eyes met his for a moment before looking away and he could bet that he saw her face turn a faint red as she blushed.
“Hey,” he smiled. She looked down in her book, not exchanging the greeting, “Have you ever been to the Arcade? It’s the best place in this shit town. Maybe I can take you there if you want?”
“Why are you trying so hard?” She finally asked in a dull voice, but Richie found it very sweet. He could listen to her voice all day, not that he would tell anyone that.
“What do you mean?”
(Y/n) sighed, searching for the right answer to give him, “Look, you’re a nice guy. But I don’t think you’ve heard the rumours that go around the school about me because if you did-”
“I’ve heard.” He confirmed, cutting her off in the process, “But like you said, they’re rumours, and I don’t believe them. You should just tell them to fuck off.”
Richie shrugged and in the first time, he saw her trying to conjure emotions. A smile. (Y/n) smiled at him softly, it was a hardly visible smile, but it was there, “Nobody cares about my opinions.”
“I care about you” Richie suggested and she blushed, smiling wider this time.
After that, (y/n) had agreed to go to the arcade with him, to the movies, to get ice-cream, sometimes even to the losers club’s meetings. And even though she was still getting used to all the attention, she loved spending time with Richie, and vice-versa.
And that is why his heart broke when he saw her crying her eyes out.
“Hey, what happened (y/n)?” He asked, sitting on his knees to reach a comforting hand to her shoulder. He waited for her to calm down. She just shook her head and laughed it off dryly.
“It’s nothing important.”
“It is, to me.”
Her eyes softened as she looked over at him and simply replied, “Just a bad day at school. People talking things behind my back is all.”
“(Y/n) I told you to tell them to fuck off, and if you won’t, then I will.” She gave him a weak smile and a shake of head
“I know I shouldn’t care about them, but I just can’t stop thinking that you will leave me one day because of-”
She were suddenly caught off guard by a soft sensation of his lips on hers, moving in synch as butterflies filled her stomach and her cheeks burned, but it felt so good
“I fell in love with you, not them.”
“Y-you love me?” She was very surprised you hear those words from him in such a short span of a few weeks. But she couldn’t wait for the day she returned them to him.
“I do.” He nodded and leaned in for another kiss.
