Headcanon that Lil’ Rascal likes sleeping on Hunter’s head! He hated it at first, but now chuckles when it happens! Small gift for a friend
× Summer started in May. It is still Summer, even though it is already the end of October.
× The scorpions are hiding. They are the sand, the wall, the cement. Only the green glow of their bodies at night alow us to slay them.
× There isn't a cloud in sight. The vast blue stretches hopelessly for miles farther than you can see. There is no end to the sky. There never has been, never will be.
× It's only 100°F outside. You thank the sun for being merciful.
× The rain is coming. You can tell by the wall of dust that's rolling toward your town.
× Monsoons have filled the parks with ponds. People swim and kiak there, happy that the ground was too hard to be pelted away by the rain. We do not wish to see what is underneith.
× The sun is bright and for once the wind is cool and gentle. You close your eyes and for a moment you imagine it's a lovely summer day. But it's only the dellusions of an early November.
× The lizards are about.
× The Cooing Doves gather in droves. They are mindless, yet organized. You wonder where they come from.
× Don't go into the desert at night. The military appriciates your cooperation.
× It's lightning storm season. The tease of rain is in the air, but it will never come.
× It's raining, it's pouring, it's unyeilding and destroying.

Hunter and Luz are siblings. Hunter was taken in before Luz was born
him and Luz fight. A lot. As siblings should
For reasons, the Nocedas move to Bonesborough just before Luz starts high school. Hunter's adaptable he doesn't care
their first day at Hexside, they split since he's 2 years older, and soon Luz becomes fast friends with treehugger Willow and eventually mythology-obsessed Gus
Hunter reluctantly gets befriended by the Blight twins. They're friends now, there's no escape
Hunter got his left ear pierced when he was in middle school. The pain traumatized him so it's just the left. Doesn't get more until 2nd year high school. Can't stand the idea of piercing his right tho. Not sure why
Now a solid friendship, Willow feels comfortable enough to visit Luz's house
Was NOT aware the cute but intimidating new student from school lives here and thinks she's got the wrong house
she doesn't. He welcomes her in, explaining Luz went out for a minute but should be back soon.
They're both pretty shy at first. On Willow's end, they've never talked and this boy is older, not to mention he seems to be friends with Amity's older siblings. Not the best line up. For Hunter, he's only seen her in passing, only heard Luz brag about "my bestie, Willow" this and that. Neither of them have much to go on, but this is his sister's best friend, this is her best friend's brother, and they are gonna make an effort because they love and care about Luz, and they understand getting along is important for her.
So they talk. Small talk, but they talk, slow and a bit awkward as teenagers are. "Oh, what track are you in?" "Into any sports?" "Whats your favorite color?"
Hunter hates small talk and meeting new people is terrifying; it's not so bad bc he recognizes Willow and it's only her, but she notices he's getting more nervous. She opts out of the conversation first, giving him a reassuring smile, "Sorry if I'm keeping you. I'll just wait here till Luz gets back."
And he is NOT having it. How dare this v cute girl come into his house, under his roof and be all considerate and accommodating??? No. No he will not be bested like this.
He waves her off and returns her smile, continuing the conversation with renewed vigor.
Luz returns just as Willow's starts going more in depth about her more exotic plants (she mentioned she has her own little green house at home and Hunter has never been more intrigued). She is v much elated to find her bro and best friend are getting along. Sadly, they have to end the conversation there, and as they part, Hunter going up to his room and Luz tugging Willow to the next room, they exchange a "Nice meeting you!" "You too. See you around..." but it's actually nice and both look forward to the next time.
While they don't hang out at school, they start talking in the halls whenever they pass each other. The Blight twins say nothing when they notice Hunter taking the long route to their next class.
Willow frequents the Noceda household. A lot. In her defense Luz is needy and constantly needs love and affection, so she's invited everyday. But even Luz has a life outside the house, has other friends and school activities to attend to. So she ends up resting at the house like a pitstop, doing homework and stuff, waiting for the bus or for her dads' to pick her up (sometimes Hunter will keep her company)
Hunter falls first in every universe.

thats all, thank you for your attention
The sunsets sure are beautiful, they say. And they are. A celebration of the sun’s disappearance for the day; The sun rises are a sickly yellow-green, and only a warning of what is coming.
There are no clouds. The last time you’ve seen clouds feels like forever ago. You’re starting to wonder if they were even really there. The sky looks white anyway.
The sun is reflected in the sunglasses of strangers. They never come off; You can’t tell if they’re looking at you when they talk to you, or if they have eyes at all.
When did you get that tan? You’ve been inside as long as you can be, hiding from the bone-dry heat. Deep down you know it’s still going to find you. You close the curtains and turn the air conditioner up. Your tan gets darker.
It’s the middle of summer, and the sun has set. You look out your window. A large spider is splayed across the glass. You grimace and look away. When you look back there are more, pressed between the glass and the screen. One of them is something you’ve never seen before. You’re not sure it’s a spider. You close your curtains.
There’s a tarantula in your sink. You don’t know how it got there. “It’s illegal to kill them” you’ve heard someone say. You grapple with what to do for an hour. The tarantula never moves.
There’s a tiny snake in the kitchen. You can swear you’ve seen the same snake in your classroom, many years ago. You sweep it into some tubberware and put it back outside.
There’s a cricket somewhere. Only one. You can never find where it is, but you know it’s in your house. You know it’s watching you; It grows quiet when you move.
The Superstition Mountains have claimed someone else.
You only dare sit outside in the dare with friends. Together, in the light, on the porch, the roof, a trampoline. Anything that doesn’t touch the ground. The coyotes howl, and someone jokingly howls back. They stop when the coyotes sound closer, the next time.
The coyotes are miles away. One laughs, and the sound comes from right outside of your window. You tell yourself it’s in the distance, that sound carries. The laughter continues.
“It’s haunted, you know,” someone tells you. You’re not surprised. “It’s haunted, you know,” and this time it’s your voice. They’re not surprised.
There’s a Circle K on the corner. And the next corner. There’s two, across the street, facing one another. It doesn’t matter which one you go into. They’re the same one, after all.
The dust clings to everything. To the windows. To the cars. To the cacti. To your soul.
You pass by someone’s yard. There is grass, a bright emerald green. It is the only one like it on the street, still wet from the sprinkler. The heat makes it stand out more than it already did. You fight the urge to lay in it, for the umpteenth time. As you force yourself to walk away, you know that one day you will give into your urge. The heat will make you.
Tempe can say otherwise all it wants. It’s part of Phoenix. Mesa is part of Phoenix. Glendale is part of Phoenix. The entire Valley is Phoenix, no matter how loudly it is said otherwise. Only Tucson and Flagstaff are not part of Phoenix– They’re far enough to escape it. You are not.
