Defining Pinkwashing: - Pinkwashing is the strateghy zionists use to justify the occupation of Palestine by using appeals to gay rights in an attempt to portray Israel as democratic and progressive, and Palestinians as backward and in need of "civilization". - This messaging relies on Islamophobic and orientalist tropes, as well as appeals to the "white man's burden" that serve to obfuscate the ongoing human rights violations of apartheid - It is a manifestation of "homonationalism" or the mobilization of LGBTQ+ constituencies and/or rhetoric to further nationalist aims.

Only in Israel" - a graphic showing a wlw kiss with the headline "In Israel it's OK to be gay" - A graphic headlined "Celebrate Pride in Israel" describing Israel as one of the most "gay friendly" areas in the mediterranean - A graphic showing an information table with a USA, 6-stripe rainbow, and Israeli flag next to a sign that says "Building LGBT connections with Israel" - A sign of a person carrying a 6-stripe rainbow flag and a printed sign that reads "we stand with Israel because Israel stands with us"
An image of a tweet that reads "All these gays defending hamas as if hamas wouldn't behead them just for existing" dated October 7 2023. The username has been edited out. An everyday example of pinkwashing which seeks to shift discussion away from criticism of the occupation's brutality and ongoing genocide, while similtaneously justifying the treatment of Palestinians by mobilizing racist, Islamophobic tropes of the 'Muslim terrorist' as a homophobic boogeyman to paint Palestinians as deserving of occupation in the interests of white gay Americans. This also ignores the demands of queer Palestinians for an end to the occupation.
Brand Israel - Brand Israel is an international zionist PR campaign launched in 2005 by Israel's foreign ministry in order to improve the image of the occupation - Brand Israel began developing a strategy targeted at LGBTQ+ people in 2009 - One early campaign happened in 2010 after a terrorist attack by a still unapprehended Israeli on an LGBT center in Tel Aviv that killed two people and injured at least a dozen more - Brand Israel responded by holding a month long "Out in Israel" festival in San Francisco in an attemp to do damage control for Israel's progressive image - Brand Israel organizes and sponsors queer tourism to Israel and works through numerous angles to highlight a specific vision of LGBTQ+ rights in Israel in order to bolster its image in the LGBTQ+ community
The Realities of Pinkwashing - Many of the rights Israel advertises LGBTQ+ people have in Israel are not actually realized - Same-sex marriage is not actually legal in Israel, the only register foreign same-sex marriages - The narrative of LGBTQ+ rights rests on the disavowal of LGBTQ+ Palestinians as entitled to any of the rights LGBTQ+ do have in Israel - Relies on racist tropes that depict Palestinians as homophobic terrorists, ignoring that homosexuality was legalized in the West Bank over 50 years before sodomy laws were overturned in the US - Portraying Israel as progressive on LGBTQ+ issues is a tool to justify the fact that the zionist occupation continues to operate with an apartheid system, denying basic human rights and citizenship to the people whose land it occupies
The Sexual Politics of Israel - Pinkwashing obscures the homophobic tactics of the occupation, such as Israel's blackmailing of queer Palestinians in attempts to turn them into informants - Pinkwashing also erases the homophobia LGBTQ+ people in Israel face, like hate crimes and discrimination - In fact, Israel ranks very low in public tolerance for LGBTQ+ people according to the European Social Survey - While Israel portrays itself as a 'sexually liberated' society, this branding obfuscates the constant sexual violence Palestinian women face by Israeli Occupation Forces and Israel's history of enforcing a eugenic sexuality, denying intermarriage rights between Israelis and Palestinians, administering contraceptives ot Ethiopian Jewish women against their will, and companies requiring migrant workers to sign contracts pledging not to have sex with Israelis
What does Pinkwashing Accomplish? - Economic Support - Seeks to portray Israel as a queer tourist destination pouring $90 million dollars in 2011 alone to begin branding it as such - Queer tourism was estimated in that same year to generate about $55 million annually for the occupation -Justification for the occupation - Through propaganda targeted at human rights organizations, Israel uses pinkwashing and its LGBTQ+ rights record to conceal its consistent denial of basic human rights and decency to Palestinians for the past 75 years - International allies of the occupation use appeals to LGBTQ+ rights to justify support for Israel's brutality - The portrayal of Palestinians as backwards seeks to brand the occupation as a civilizing venture through racist tropes
ombatting Pinkwashing - Pinkwashing has been a central strategy of justifying the occupation for years. It is imperative that we organize as queer pepole to dismantle it. We can begin to do this by: - Boycotting queer tourism to Israel - Protesting and disrupting the normalization of apartheid and genocide by LGBTQ+ organizations domestically - Highlighting the hypocrisy and falsities of pinkwashing tactics - Organizing within our commuinity to join the ongoing movement for ending all U.S. aid to Israel and demanding an end to the occupation
