"The way my baby daughter slept was so funny, and I had some time to spare while she was asleep," explains Fukuoka Instagrammer Eriko Ohga (@erichedelic). In Japan, a growing trend called “nezo art” (寝相アート) has been inspiring mothers like Eriko to take creative photos of their babies while they sleep. Literally meaning “sleep-posture art” in Japanese, this new style of documenting baby years allows moms to have some fun during their few hours of peace while the little one sleeps.
The “nezo art” that creative moms like Eriko share are especially elaborate, using costumes and household props like laundry to shape scenes that tell stories. “I try to form a rough idea of the scene I want to create and prepare the area where my daughter would lay down before she falls asleep,” reveals Eriko. She then places her daughter in the designated setup, and, once the baby is asleep, the rest of the parts are put together in stealthy movements. Eriko also shares her tips for shooting the finished image: “I climb up on a chair to capture the entire scene from above. I’m also extra careful not to wake the baby up with the sound of the iPhone camera.”
Very creative!

It began as a little exercise — a daily goal that might spring Tristan Kelley (@tristankelley), a graphic designer and drummer from Denver, out of a musical rut. Now, over 500 days later, Tristan’s pet project, #BeatADay, has turned him into a creative force and one of the Internet’s best music teachers.
His account has become a hub of musical conversation, thanks to the daily video lessons he posts, which show both his playing and the musical notes he’s thumping. “A lot of drummers have not read or are even scared of reading music,” he says. “So my thing was, what can I do to help people who are scared by that, to at least see visually what they’re doing?”
Tristan had been playing drums since middle school when he passed his marching band audition with flying colors. But he had become his own harshest critic over the years, leading to the sort of caution that had stripped all the fun and spontaneity out of what should be the most raucous and energizing instrument to play.
“I’m a pretty big perfectionist, and over the years I’ve had countless songs and projects that I haven’t finished; I’d work on them and work on them and get burnt out,” he says. “Once you label something as finished, then it’s open to critique and scrutiny. If I don’t say it’s finished, then no one can critique it. So, [at that point] I said that I have to make something every day; I want to work on it and make it good, but if I do it every day, I won’t have time to obsess and go down that rabbit hole.”
Tristan spent a full year writing and posting a new drum beat, and when he hit 365 days in a row, he posted a new beat every hour, as if to punctuate his newfound prolific output. Instead of just celebrating an impressive accomplishment, Tristan decided to share his knowledge by adding the musical notes that he plays in each beat. He comes up with about five different beats per hour in his home studio, and then spends time cutting and editing the clips.
“It’s been great practice for me in musical creativity,” he says. “So much of music, especially if you’re playing with someone new or recording a song, is ‘How fast can you come up with something that’s cool and unique?’”

Each winter, thousands flock to frigid Northeast China for the spectacular Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival (哈尔滨国际冰雪节).
The festival officially began on January 5 and lasts for one month, but construction on the massive snow and ice sculptures started months ago. The structures—which range in form from animals to full-scale buildings—are just as impressive after dark as they are during the day thanks to colorful lighting embedded within the ice.
Festival spectators face temperatures as low as -35º Celsius (-31º Fahrenheit), but people from around world can explore the striking sculptures through photos and videos shared to Instagram.

Top Shot: Shrimp Encounter
Top Shot features the photo with the most votes from the previous day’s Daily Dozen, 12 photos chosen by the Your Shot editors from thousands of recent uploads. Our community votes for their favorite photo from the selection, and the Top Shot is showcased on the @natgeoyourshot Instagram account.
“This is one of my favorite photos of my favorite critter,” writes Your Shot photographer Adam Silverman. “Shot with a +25 magnifier, it really brings out the detail in this otherwise very small skeleton shrimp. Its face is clear, its reddish eyes are visible, and the way it faces my camera with it’s arms wide makes it almost symmetrical. It’s clear color matches the hydra that it is living on. Plus the colors in the background really make this an interesting and beautiful photo.” Photograph by Adam Silverman

Off the beaten path in Oaxaca, Mexico, two soaring cliffs resemble frozen waterfalls. Their name, Hierve el Agua (“the water boils”), stems from the warm mineral springs on the clifftops. As runoff from the pools flows over the cliffs, excess calcium carbonate in the water sculpts the rock. Ages of this process have resulted in the cliffs’ distinct appearance. Instagrammers visiting the cliffs have explored the bubbling turquoise pools and captured the view of the lush valley below.
Perfeito!
