Hello readers and writers alike, I would like to point out something that has been so glaringly annoying to me and other Deaf/HoH people so that we can end all these misconceptions. People who write for Deaf!Readers should know a few things before starting their imagines, fanfictions, blurbs - anything. It is not anyone’s fault for not knowing these things, most hearing people are not aware of the Deaf community or Deaf culture so here I am, a Deaf person who is majoring in Deaf Studies and Culture, coming here to tell you a few things to know when writing for a Deaf!Reader
(Remember this is my experience as a Deaf/HoH person and it may differ from person to person but this is what I learned/have slight annoyances within writing)
Deaf and Hard of Hearing is a culture. Yes, most people consider it a disability but IT IS NOT SOMETHING WE ARE ASHAMED OF! Please stop writing fics/imagines about Deaf!Reader being ashamed of not being able to hear or getting hearing aids to impress their SO. It’s completely wrong and just annoying. We are proud of our Deafness and we don’t want to be fixed.
DO NOT USE THE TERM ‘HEARING IMPAIRED’! This is basically a slur word. It was widely used in the ’90s but now it’s considered a derogatory term. Just use Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Or ‘deaf’ if the person is medically deaf and not culturally Deaf. (see next point)
Deaf and ‘deaf’ are different. Deaf is a cultural term for people who are born Deaf and raised in the community. The term ‘deaf’ is used in the medical field or used to describe someone who has hearing loss that does not associate with the Deaf Community. Usually, a hearing person who has become deaf later on.
Sign language is not a worldwide language. There are different types of language within sign language. ASL is for American and Canada. BSL is for Britain. So if you’re writing a story that takes place in a country that is not America or Canada, do not say ASL.
ASL does not = English. Same for every other language. ASL is its own language with grammar rules and semantics. It does not directly translate to English. So if you’re writing ASL most likely write in GLOSS or write it as you would write a hearing character. (Sentance: I want to go to the mall and buy a dress. GLOSS: I WANT WANT GO TO MALL I. ME BUY DRESS ME )
Deafness is on a spectrum. There is a legal threshold that someone must pass to be considered legally Deaf. Some Deaf people can hear more than others. I can hear high pitched noises sometimes. I know someone who can hear voices but can not hear what they are saying. Both of us are Deaf and we both cross that threshold. So when writing your Deaf!Character make sure to set a bar of what they can and can not hear.
Hearing Aids do not cure anyone’s deafness. It only helps hear some sounds and maybe hear if people are talking. Not what they are saying although it can help with that depending on how far they are on the Deaf scale.
Cochlear Implants are very controversial in the Deaf Community so if you’re going to write about them do your research!!! They are also not a cure for Deafness, just an aid.
Deaf people are not masters at lipreading! Even the best lip readers can only make sense of 30% of what is being said. I’ve been lip reading for years and I still only understand a little bit of what is being said. So no, your character is not going to miraculously know what’s going on from lip reading.
DO NOT have your characters yell at your Deaf characters. DOES NOT MATTER HOW LOUD YOU ARE! We can not hear you. Neither can your character. Have your other hearing characters speak normally. That’s the best way to lip read if they must.
Most Deaf people are born from hearing parents. It’s really rare for a whole entire family to be Deaf (Although I’ve met some and it’s super cool). But your character is probably born to hearing parents.
ALSO, the majority of hearing families with Deaf children do NOT learn ASL. It sucks but it’s true. Only about 30-40% of families learn sign for their Deaf family members. So keep it in mind,
So this is my list for now! I may add to it the more I think about things but this is basics I think everyone should know. If I forgot some then feel free to add! (as long as you are knowledgeable about the topic please). If you have questions please message me! Or if you need someone to proofread your Deaf!Imagines then I almost here for that. So happy writings everyone!

Me:
This is one amazing movie. Everything was done right, the animation was used to full advatage, the music, the characters, the plot and the storytelling - everything was great, if not completly original, but done in a fresh, dynamic and sincere way.
Once again it gets proven that the main character doesn’t have to be ordinary to be relatable or interesting. Miles Morales is not another plain, socially awkward guy. No, quite the opposite, he is cool, carefree and confident, has friends, good grades and always a smart joke to offer. He has some quarrels with his parents - but nothing extreme, they love each other very much - just that natural little disparaty between parents pushing thier child to make something of himself and the child just trying to find who he wants to be. It’s relatable to youngsters, but not so overdone yet to be preachy.
The movie makes an intersting point by showing how parents don’t have to be absent or outright extreme abusers to still make for an engaging influence for their children and how even the best intensions and love don’t make relationships without conflict or strain. Miles’s parents have an actual role in the movie and actually have some meanigful and moving moments.
The characters are plastic, likeable and well-written, acting logical and with understandable motives, flaws and charisma. Mainly Miles is a smart kid doing his best, coming off free and easy, trying to find his way.
There is uncle Aaron, who without the immediate concern and responsibily of a parent takes the role of a relaxing, charismatic and casual confidant to Miles and later gets and interesing shady plot twist.
Then we have Peter B. Parker an older version of the typical Spiderman, with a future that took a surprisingly realistic bleak turn. But don’t be fooled, despite the rugged and a bit neglected appearence, he is still the capable hero we know, with experience and abilities you can count on. His start as a teacher is a bit ruff, but he learns step by step, not only winning the sympathy of the audience but also a rewarding development of his student.
Next we have Gwen, a pretty action girl, taking her superhero role with style and spark. This is not a love story by any stretch, but her presence is powerful and makes for a nice dynamic with Miles.
All Spidermans have their own distinguished tone and make for a solid, funny and powerful group. Their protectivness towards Miles as the latest Spidey, who still has lots to learn, without derogating his importance is sweet. Their respective fashion, fighting style, personalities and quirks prove great attention to detail and make the ride that much more lively.
It’s also a great origin story for our main hero, since he has the abilities and the brains, but still needs to belive in himself. This doesn’t sound as a very original conflict, but it’s conveyed very emotionally. Miles faces his challanges with realistic fear and beginner’s incompetence, but still comes off as a strong, determined and moral boy. He struggles, he falls, but he cares and learns - this process is portrayed masterfully in the movie and the final, where Miles accepts all the lessons and finds his inner balance and belief in himself, is that much more satisfying.
Miles is an incredibly well written character. It’s gratifying to see him not being a meek weakling just to have a bigger contrast for his growth at the end. Miles is cheeky and smart, obviously talented and intelligent with a loving family, but still has enough room to grow, enough obstacles to overcome and enough of the world’s and society’s as well as personal problems to face. Yet he manages to be very approachable, representing modern teenagers and circumstances in a playful and compellig way, making the movie a fantastic experience.

Marinette: um-what–

Joshua is playing this role so FUCKING well. Every time he looks at Gina he’s so in awe of her and slowly falling for her but can’t believe it. Because he has only really liked one girl in his entire life. Since they were literal children, the only girl he’s ever paid attention to was Nini. Now, all of the sudden, he sees Gina. I mean, really sees her. Wants to be around her, misses her, wants to celebrate achievements with her, wants to open up to her. But he can’t bring himself to understand how he could like more than one girl. Or better yet, how he could stop liking the one girl he’s liked his whole life and start falling for another.
Ricky has outright said what the writers are not so subtly throwing at us in regards to Rini’s relationship paralleling Ricky’s parents relationship. Nini being his mother and Ricky being his father. Ricky and Nini have pretty much been together their entire lives. He has been raised by two people who have been together for HIS entire life. Ricky has to slowly comes to terms with the fact that not everything lasts, people move on, they grow apart, they grow. But if he accepts his separation with Nini, he’d have to accept his parents separation. So he wants to be with her but he’s conflicted because part of him exudes his just a bit of his mothers behavior. She’s spending time with another guy - Ricky is spending time with Gina. If he accepts his mother can find a place in her heart for another love, he has accept that his heart has room for another love? That he is ready to move forward. Ricky clearly doesn’t want to accept that. Joshua is playing this so lovestruck but also blindsided by his quick admiration and liking of Gina. IT’S AMAZING TO WATCH.
I’m not gonna sit here and pretend that Ricky never loved Nini and that’s why he didn’t say it back. I’m sure he did and probably still does which is why I do think they will get back together and he’ll finally work up the nerve to say I loveD you. “I love you. I am so sorry I couldn’t say I love you months ago. I don’t know where we would be in our relationship if I had. Maybe I would have still grown out of that love, as you have. And that’s okay. Maybe us realizing that now hurts less than it would have before or maybe this hurts more.” Ricky and Nini will both fall out of love with each other, they’ll stay single for a while and learn that they can remain best friends. They’ve known each other since they were children like cmon, they are BEST FRIENDS.
Ricky and Gina though, wheeeeeeew child. Them are some SOULMATES. People have said it over and over again but to me, it would really wild to not put together the two people who you have SHOWN being friends with each other. The building of the friendship between Ricky and Gina. Something that we didn’t get to see with Nini and Ricky. Much like we didn’t get to see Ricky’s parents relationship, his mom was gone FROM THE PILOT. From the jump, my guy! There’s nothing for me to yearn for when it comes to rini. I don’t know what they had??? I know what Ricky and Gina have and they can slow burn this out and give me so much more and tbh I’m ready.
Here it it! The first chapter! I’m really excited to start sharing this story, it’s been in my head for so long and with the movie finally being out and consuming my soul and my money, this seems like a perfect solution.
Let me know what you think!
If there are any spelling mistakes please let me know because *John Mulaney voice* that’s the thing I’m sensitive about
