CONFIRMED MCLENNON SONGS BY JOHN LENNON AND PAUL MCCARTNEY
GOODNIGHT
I watched Help! For the first time recently, it was a lot of fun, but my feelings are kinda mixed on it, considering how they used Hinduism in the film, and played into a lot of racist tropes towards Indians :/
yeah. they didn't even attempt to hide it. old media (and current media if weâre being honest, but they've just gotten better at hiding it) mocked/insulted cultures/races so much. they wouldn't even hide it. it was in kids cartoons, commercials, everything. even the monkees show had bits against mexicans, asians, and indians too with racist stereotypes. racist stereotypes have been around forever and it just keeps carrying over to other generations. sigh.
itâs just ignorance on the film makers part. i don't think the beatles were really involved in the making of the plot (not that i know of, at least), and they were stoned for basically the whole movie so they didn't give a shit. and to be honest, even if they were involved and sober i still don't think they'd see anything wrong with the film at the time. because it wouldn't affect them or hurt them/their culture. because a lot of people are ignorant to these racist tropes that they've deemed normal because they've seen it/heard it all their lives from media and their peers.Â
help! is a decent movie (except ringoâs hair deserves jail time) and itâs a good laugh. itâs a fun movie. itâs okay to enjoy it but itâs important to understand the undertones it kind of had. and to acknowledge it.Â

couldnât figure out how to reblog with audio but this post just made me remember that one short part from the oh! darling anthology 3 ver. 𼺠PAUL: well, well darling⌠JOHN: darling⌠PAUL: please believe me. JOHN: please believe me. PAUL: iâll never, iâll never do you⌠JOHN: do you no harm! PAUL: iâll never do you no harm, darling. believe me when i tell you⌠JOHN: oh i do! PAUL: iâll never do youâŚno harm.
I've always wondered about the Key West incident. "We ended up crying â about, you know, how wonderful we were, and how much we loved each other, even though weâd never said anything". Does that we only refer to John and Paul or to the four Beatles ?
Actually, he has changed version quite a few times. But the official one is that it was just him and John, because this story comes from the song âHere Todayâ (song he wrote for John) and the line âWhat about the night we criedâ:
âWE WERE IN KEY WEST IN 1964. WE WERE DUE TO FLY INTO JACKSONVILLE, IN FLORIDA, AND DO A CONCERT THERE, BUT WEâD BEEN DIVERTED BECAUSE OF A HURRICANE. WE STAYED THERE FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS, NOT KNOWING WHAT TO DO EXCEPT, LIKE, DRINK. I REMEMBER DRINKING WAY TOO MUCH, AND HAVING ONE OF THOSE TALKING-TO-THE-TOILET BOWL EVENINGS. IT WAS DURING THAT NIGHT, WHEN WEâD ALL STAYED UP WAY TOO LATE, AND WE GOT SO PISSED THAT WE ENDED UP CRYING - ABOUT, YOU KNOW, HOW WONDERFUL WE WERE, AND HOW MUCH WE LOVED EACH OTHER, EVEN THOUGH WEâD NEVER SAID ANYTHING. IT WAS A GOOD ONE: YOU NEVER SAY ANYTHING LIKE THAT. ESPECIALLY IF YOUâRE A NORTHERN MAN.â
â Paul explaining the line âWhat about the night we cried?â from Here Today (Source: Guardian Unlimited, 2004)
This is from an interview on Daily Mail:
âTHAT WAS IN KEY WEST, WHEN A CONCERT HAD BEEN POSTPONED, BECAUSE OF A HURRICANE IN FLORIDA. AND SO WE HAD TO HIDE OUT FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS, AND ENDED UP IN THIS LITTLE HOTEL SUITE TOGETHER.âONE NIGHT, WE GOT PRETTY DRUNK AND ARGUED AND LAUGHED, AND IT ENDED UP US BOTH CRYING, BECAUSE IT WAS, YOU KNOW AT THE HEIGHT OF YOUR DRUNKENNESS, WHEN YOUâRE ALL, âHEY MAN, I LOVE YOU, MAN. NO, I LOVE YOU, MAN.âââTHAT WAS PROBABLY THE ONLY TIME WE JUST GOT THAT KIND OF INTIMATE WITH EACH OTHER"
This is from an interview in 2011 with Terry Gross:
MR. MCCARTNEY: I seem to remember we had some time off in Key West, Florida, and it was because there was a hurricane, and weâd been diverted, I think, from Jacksonville. So we had to spend a night or two in Key West, is where we ended up, anyway. And at that age, with that much time on our hands, we really didnât know what to do with it except get drunk. And so that was what we did. And we stayed up all night talking, talking, talking like it was going out of style. And at some point early in the morning, I think we must have touched on some points that were really emotional, and we ended up crying, which was very unusual for us, because we - members of a band and young guys, we didnât do that kind of thing. So I always remembered it as a sort of important emotional landmark.GROSS: Do you remember what you were talking about that led to that?MR. MCCARTNEY: Probably our mothers dying, because John and I shared that experience. My mother died when I was about 14, and his died shortly after - about a year or so after, I think. So this was a great bond John and I always had.We both knew the pain of it, and we both knew that we had to put on a brave face because we were sort of teenage guys, and you didnât talk about that kind of thing where we came from.
Once or maybe twice Iâve heard this story by Paul in which he has randomly added George or Ringo too. But Iâm 100% sure it was just him and John. Donât ask me why he does that, itâs the same âWe loved johnâ story (when Paul has to say he loves John he never says âIâ he always adds random people like George Harrison and says âWe all loved Johnâ)
He probably doesnât want the scene to be too intimate, dear god he has a serious problem with showing affection toward John in public.
letâs not glorify &/or stay silent about the beatlemaniacs in the 1960s that stalked the beatles, clawed at/got grabby with them when they walked by, physically harmed any of their wives out of petty jealousy, broke security rules to see/touch them, etc.
itâs not a testiment to how great the band was; itâs a testiment to how harmful fandom culture can be to celebrities. it doesnât matter how much they âlovedâ the beatles; itâs not an excuse to harass people.
December 8th, 1970: John adjudges his own accountability for the things he says or has said.
JOHN: We all say a lot of things that we donât know what weâre talking about. Iâm probably doing it now, I donât know what I said. See, everybody takes you up on the words you said in 19â Iâm just a guy who people ask what about things. I blab off, and some of it makes sense, some of itâs bullshit, some of itâs lies and some of itâs⌠God knows what Iâm saying, you know? I felt it, you see. So when I felt it, it was like I was crucified. So I know what theyâre talking about now.

your relationship doesnât have to be toxic to be a bad one. it can be unfulfilling, exhausting, loveless. and someone doesnât have to be terrible to you for you to leave them. if you arenât primarily happy in your relationship, you have a valid reason to not be in it. donât beat yourself up because your situation âcould be worse.â if it isnât what you want, you donât have to stay in it.
