A Change of Perspective

I was not expecting so much attention on my latest Flatland artwork, as I´m writting my biggest post so far it´s about to hit 400 notes.

Thank you to everyone for sharing my artwork, following me and thanks to everybody leaving comments on them, I truly appreciate what you have to say about my work!

So, I wanted to write a little about my personal relationship with this novel. Although small, it did help me create a point of reference for my growth over these years.

I knew about this novel since 2016, after the 2016 Bill Q&A mentions Edwin A. Abott. Of course my curiosity got the best of me and I decided to figure out this world. I ended up falling on a 4th dimension theory and Mathematics rabbit hole.

Since a lot of conversations surrounding the book where around theories on the 4th dimension, rather than giving political comentary on the book. As it´s rediscovery was made in the year 1920´s, one could imagine why that was the case. For the most part, due to Einstein´s main interest being how Edwin A. was able to somehow predict the 4th dimension´s existence.

Thanks to this, I didn´t take Flatland´s themes into consideration, and just read a few chapters out of order.

July 2024, The Book of Bill releases. Once again, there´s a reference to the novel in one of the pages. And for old times sake I decided to revisit Flatland. Curiously it´s when I got recommended the 2007 Flatland movie to no end, I eventually, after a long weekend of College work, decided to watch it as I animated.

After that, I decided this time I would finally give myself the time to finish the novel. With an older and more open mind I was able to finish the book and understand it´s themes; critiquing bigotry and seeing the world through a whole new perspective. Makes me wish little me finished the book instead of taking its message for granted, could’ve helped get over some mayor denial I had back then.

I believe things happen a certain way for a reason, maybe it was for the better that I didn’t finish that book back then, at least it gave me the opportunity to better appreciate it :^]c

I hope this community keeps on growing. And I hope to see more people create more content for this interesting world!

The Arts of Being, rewritten

The Depths of a Bidimensional Existence, Unravelled (because subtitles in books are fun!)

hey! Remember that novel I wrote? And that I said I'd maybe rewrite sometime?

Well it's gonna happen for real this time. I'll give more detail as I get the time (and I don't have much time to write currently with a job/community service, another job, and school, and therapy, and finally getting that autism diagnosis! Yay!)

I'm a bit inspired by VAS: An Opera in Flatland, which I admittedly havent finished reading because I once again was disillusioned with the humanized flatlanders, the women-not-being-lines and non-bidimensional perspective and stuff.. but I find the visual style interesting - I might make a special edition with similar additions, but as of now the rewrite is simply text, possibly with the addition of the encrypted texts/3d dialogue like the original.

My goal with this is more bidimensionality (dwelling more into the 2d life and perspective and the jarring transition to 3d) maybe i'll try to tackle some theme throughout, and change details like Bill and Liam because 1. i dont like flat dreams at all 2. i dont like possibly getting sued.

My goal is to make something I'm even more proud of and that I can publish - my dad told me I could self-publish through amazon, I think (I may give out free digital copies to the OG flatlandblr crew if anyone wants to be my beta-readers?)

However running it through my dad would mean removing (or making very implicit..) a lot of the queer things of the book. The disability commentary will remain (even more now that I'm making changes to "Bill", if you've seen my recent reblogs), the relationship between Pol and The-Now-Unnamed-Equilateral will continue to be very deep, plus A. Shape will retain its pronouns, but I'm unsure and scared of what would happen with the other details.

The novel will possibly be a bit lengthier, obviously written with more thought and detail I hope - I can't promise the perfect work as I'm just some 17 year old kid.. but I have a lot of love for this flat world, as I hope you guys know, so I will try to do it justice in all its flat glory.

If you have any comments or questions, (or ideas on what to call Bill.. honestly, I might change all the names to non-human-sounding ones.. but I'm not sure?) I'm always open! You guys are the biggest reason I want to do this.

Really wish I didn't have to make any changes to the designs as I adore the movie, but I get really upset looking at the 2007 characters now :( so it was out of necessity for me.

I like to believe, as A.Square got older, he begun forgetting not only what he saw on the third dimension, but also how the Sphere looks like

symbolism explanation under the cut (this ones a doozy) :

Liz is depicted as per usual as the Sun, with Earth in her hands - a placeholder for Ruth. Atlas is supposed to depict the North Star, with the crescent Moon in his hands being Chief. Liz is coloured in a rough manner (to give a ‘fire’ effect), while Atlas is coloured much more cleanly (to give a polished gold and matte painted porcelain appearance) - both reflecting their personalities.

The gold components of Atlas’s body are much stronger than that of his fragile porcelain body, it is damaged and chipped compared to his unscarred limbs. His limbs are identical to his father’s, who held the same position as Atlas in his prime and is someone who Atlas looks up to. These are strong and have been handed down to him, but his body isn’t as sturdy. The white porcelain is painted yellow and spreads outwards, as if trying to blend into the tougher gold parts of him - trying to be something it’s not.

The Earth and Sun complement each other in a way that is somewhat similar to how the North Star and the Moon do. However, the former are much closer to one another than the latter are. The Earth symbol is closer to Liz’s hands than the Moon symbol is to Atlas’s hands, representing Liz and Ruth’s close relationship compared to Atlas and Chief’s continually distancing relationship. Liz is unfazed and shows no emotion in her eye, she knows where the Earth is and trusts it won’t leave her ‘orbit’. Meanwhile, Atlas stares longingly, yet tiredly, at the crescent Moon slowly daring to leave his hands.

Liz, as a star, is a light source onto whom no shadows cast, and her light casts onto both ‘Ruth’ and ‘Chief’. The Earth also blocks some of her light from the Moon, casting a small but intense shadow on it. However, Liz’s light doesn’t reach Atlas and it’s instead reflected off the Moon and back onto him - despite being a star who should also produce his own light. He no longer gets his light, i.e. comfort, from Liz anymore - but instead a skewed and watered down version of it from Chief, who is the one closest in proximity to him anymore.
