Mr. Showtime and Ms. Nothingness!!!
This Mafuyu commission is slowly becoming my favourite Mafuyu commission so far, and honestly it’s well deserved. I have so many thoughts of her commissions’ progression.
For a long time it felt like [the themes] was getting lighter with every commission. Jackpot Sad Girl felt like the song was written for a marionette show, just like how Mafuyu was her mother’s marionette. Reborn is like a small reprieve, a balming essence to the soul, a cry for help perhaps. Bug was her finally realising. Engeki is her taking charge and trying to escape for her own survival. Empurple is her hope of reconciliation.
Yet, the new song felt like her heart has been broken, choked. She is relapsing into trying to please her mother and yet that is hurting her more, like the thorns and barbed wires she set up around her heart to protect it only to get hurt instead. The road to recovery is a long way to go, and it isn’t always easy, but I hope Mafuyu’s story will come to a happy end!!!
The song made me feel a lot of things. It is definitely in the same veins of Unpoison, and definitely feels like a song OWN, not Yuki, would write and compose. A choking sense yet it is her deepest and rawest emotions. It also somehow reminds me of Maretu’s and Kikuo’s songs and I love it.
I also love the 2D MV so much!!! I love the detail of for the first 2/3rds-ish of the MV it shows only Mafuyu and her being alone. Surrounding her are balloons of her different masks and her test papers. Someone pointed it out but at the end with the full group Mizuki is also the only one to be looking up, the only one to have her peace for now because her secret has been told.
Somehow she’s still “I could get beheaded if I ask something of them”
This is how everyone is about maomao and I love it
I have a headcanon that as a child, Tsukasa would be that one kid that all the neighbours compare their kids to. He probably have pretty good grades so as not to add extra stress for his parents and is shown to be quite independent, and he wins some ‘small’ piano competitions as well (I still have zero idea if it’s actually small or not considering Harumichi’s respect for him, apparently) and he seems to be that bright kid who greets everyone and is very enthusiastic and optimistic.
One day, when Sega has finally (involuntarily) finished with making Tsukasa nothing more than comic relief we’ll get to see more Tenma-Aoyagi interactions. Touya got to go to Kamikou bc he heard Tsukasa was going there, the admiration he has for Tenmama has to be ASTRONOMICAL because Tsukasa is part of weirdo wombo combo for a reason. How many piano competitions did he win as a child because goddamn 🙏
I probably should go to sleep now but I just realised something, was Sua ever scared that Mizi would find out? Sua dedicated her entire life to protecting Mizi’s innocence and followed that to the end of her life. Mizi’s pureness and optimism was what gave her an escape, thus becoming her obsession (as stated in the art book) and it is through her own selfishness that Mizi collapsed when faced with her first encounter with loss. She took the easy exit so that she doesn’t have to face the reality where she no longer has the escapism she found in Mizi’s innocence, so was she ever anxious that Mizi would lose the innocence before due? What if Mizi encountered such a loss before Sua was ready, thus taking away her obsession, her reason to live?
I feel like in a universe where that happened, Mizi would still collapse from the long time she was protected, but would adjust better and therefore making her stronger mentally, though how she’d react after knowing the truth of the stage I can’t say. However, I think in such a universe perhaps Sua wouldn’t throw her life away so easily, and would actually try to win.
Still, Sua’s obsession really does leave room for such interpretations. Since Sua is, y’know, dead, we really don’t ever get to see her perspective of things. Of course, there’s the “where else would I find such a heavenly garden” comic and that comic of Ivan calling Sua out, but an obsession is much more complex than that. It’s not just love, but selfishness and hatred and every emotion imaginable.
I need to see more discussion of Luka and Sua parallels. Both are two-faced, both considers themselves as ‘protectors’ and both are angelic themed. There’s a lot to be said about how similar both of them are, and that in some ways affects their relationship to their respective loves too.
I don’t think Till is dead, at least not narratively.
He is very much dead in canon imo. Even if he could theoretically survive the shots from Blink Gone, Wiege made a point in Mizi’s grief and her crying is a big indicator he’s probably not breathing anymore. I do see some people trying to rationalize why he’s not dead yet using real world sciences, but honestly it’s a reach. It unrealistic to expect works of art to portray real world science 100% accurately (as in we artists does do our research, but can’t research to the extent of such fans reverse engineering and selecting very niche things to prove something).
However, Till’s story has not reached any sort of climax or have a satisfactory ending yet. So far, Sua’s, Ivan’s and Hyuna’s stories can be tied up in a neat little bow, but Till’s is still lacking. So far there are 3 main points/stories we know about him, being his backstory (MamaTill (i forgot her name) and her love for him being a catalyst for his love of humanity/other things seeing as he’s the only other member of Alnst’s cast to have actual human blood family), his admiration for Mizi (being his inspiration for many things) and his complicated relationship with Ivan. I think it’s pretty clear their relationship is not unrequited and Till does consider him and Ivan somewhat close, but I interpret their relationship as being not very communicative and that leads to the tragedy of Ivan’s story. That being said, I don’t believe we’ve quite have a clear perspective of Till’s side on their relationship. Cure is very focused on Ivan’s perspective of things, and while Blink Gone does show some imagery of Ivan, it is more of his reaction to Ivan’s death rather than his relationship to Ivan and to Ivan himself. (I’m not gonna analyze their relationship and Cure and Black Sorrow many others have made threads about that)
How is Vivimeng going to continue his story? I have no idea. But my best guess is that Till is probably going to be given a solo song and/or an MV like the Mizisua one.
I find it fascinating how half of the cast needs the death of their respective duo/ship to be pushed to the next point of their stories lmao. In the same vein it’ll probably be a while before Luka’s or Mizi’s stories end. Mizi is now on her ‘discovering the corruption the world carries’ story after being protected for so long and Luka has his ‘Live with love’ story, either being a redemption arc or his story will end soon with his love, Hyuna.
I think Ena might be a better fit to be Mafuyu’s savior compared to Kanade.
Kanamafu is actually toxic, what with Kanade’s savior complex making her neglect her own needs and Kanade focusing too much on saving Mafuyu with her music giving her tunnel vision. Though it’s not a permanent solution, Mafuyu running away is actually good for her because it gives her the breather she needs. Kanade was not the one to suggest her running away, instead it was Mizuki. Kanade’s character, to me, feels like she sees Mafuyu as this helpless damsel in distress, controlled by her mother, and that she must be this shining knight to come save her.
Kanade and Mafumom carries a lot of parallels, more than this fandom would like to admit. Both of them thinking they’re ‘helping’ Mafuyu, wanting the best for her. Despite their intentions, their actions are obviously not the best for Mafuyu. The thing about this is that both Kanade and Mafuyu need to get better before they can truly have a healthy relationship.
Why do I believe Ena is the best option for Mafuyu getting saved?
First of all, I don’t think Kanade should be the one to ‘save’ Mafuyu at all. Validating her savior complex and letting her think she was able to ‘save’ Mafuyu would lead to her finding other characters and trying to save them as well, that she was able to ‘save’ Mafuyu so why couldn’t she ‘save’ others?
Second of all, Ena’s whole theme of ‘art’ and being able to capture the inner beauty makes her the perfect candidate to being the one to lure out Mafuyu’s “true feelings”. It would be a great converging points for two characters who, so far, have been portrayed as opposites. One having talent and no passion, one having passion and no talent. One being unable to understand their own feelings to the point of not being able to feel, one feeling everything so fully with their entire beings.
This is my own personal opinion and I might be biased, might’ve also gotten a few things wrong bc I haven’t gotten to reread all of Kanade’s stories, but this is generally what I feel about Kanamafu as a whole.
Proseka should do a Tsukasa and Mizuki fashion mix event. I’m pretty sure it’s canon that WxS’s oufits are designed and sewn by both Tsukasa and Mizuki, and I need an event of them bonding over sewing techniques and exchanging ideas.
One thing I’ve noticed is that they both favour bright colours, patterns to highlight certain parts and both seem love ruffles. It’d be amazing to see them to just send pics and updates of their latest fashion projects to each other since they have tastes that are quite adjacent to each other (as someone who is into both of their styles) (that being lolita and more formal academia-ish outfits)
I think it’s funny how Tsukasa can dress like either a mom of 5 or he’s about to recite shakespeare to you unironically. It’s quite the contrast to Mizuki whose style is much more consistent.
Mizuki should be given the privilege of giving the entirety of his closet a makeover, as well as the entirety of the cast’s closets.
Jon definitely was the type to look at others’ faces without looking at their eyes when making conversation. It’s close to their eyes but never quite directly at their eyes (that trick where you stare at others’ foreheads instead of their eyes to creep them out) so no one ever explicitly calls him out on it. He isn’t even aware he’s doing that.
My favorite character interpretation for both Jonathan Sims and pre distortion Michael Shelley is that they’re a little odd in general even without all the fear entity stuff.
Jon stares just a little too long when makes conversation. Michael moves in a sudden jerky way that would remind most people of a spider moving its legs. Jon always looks a little too…stiff. Like he’s a porcelain doll sat against the chair instead of a man. Michael never walks flat on feet, he noticeably puts his weight on either on his heels or his toes.
Jon’s eye, hair, and clothing colors always look a bit dull somehow. Like someone drew him and then turned the contrast down. Michael’s fingers and toes are noticeably long and quite a few people have told him that he has the longest fingers/toes they’ve ever seen.
I could pretend this headcanon is profound commentary on their humanity, but honestly I’m just very fond of viewing Jon and Michael as cryptid adjacent.
I need the proseka writers to actually be serious for once and explore Tsukasa’s character beyond being comic relief. These past events of his is just a cycle of him Running into a challenge —> Training to overcome said challenge —> Partially overcomes it or not overcome it entirely with nothing more than “Oh you need to train harder!”.
Tsukasa’s character is so much more than that and it gets ignored. A huge part of his character is him not just being a silly ™️ guy but also a very responsible leader and someone you can trust that’ll lend an ear. He’s someone who is very emotionally intelligent in my opinion (even if he doesn’t realise that) and is someone who can get through to others.
His role as an older brother is also extremely important to his character yet I feel that it is also so very unexplored. There are a lot of instances where it bleeds through to Saki’s and sometimes Toya’s stories, and yes you do have to read Saki’s story to understand Tsukasa, but I wish that it would take the spotlight more in his own events.
I know the “Mafukasa parallels” are very overdone in the fandom but you can’t deny that there are some pretty similar themes in their stories. I think the main difference between them is that Mafuyu’s are inflicted upon by others while Tsukasa is inflicted upon by himself. Why do so many characters that are shown to have struggled during their middle school years have that experience to be explored whilst Tsukasa isn’t??? I don’t think that his experience of when Saki is in the hospital and her illness is so bad she can’t go to school at all wouldn’t leave a lasting effect on him???
I wish he would have more interactions with other characters outside of the people usually associated with him. The mixed events are especially important for a character like Tsukasa due to how much his character rely on other characters. Make him interact with other members of the cast!!!
I think it’d be very interesting to explore in depth his relationship with Leo/need outside the context of Saki, after all, with them being childhood friends with Saki and their falling out in middle school he definitely has to have some sort of opinion on them.
He should interact with characters like Kanade and Ena as well, especially Kanade. Her goal of ‘saving people with music’ is VERY very similar to his goal of ‘bringing smiles with shows’ and I think that should be explored. Ena’s character of her struggles with art could pair well with his story of struggles with acting as well, both being deemed as ‘not having the natural talent’.
And finally some more interactions with Mafuyu, someone who struggles to smile genuinely and someone who wishes to bring others smiles would make for a very compelling dynamic me thinks, even if he doesn’t play an active role in her recovery. I think he’d be a breath of fresh air, a new perspective for Mafuyu, while she brings more understanding to a person’s psyche for Tsukasa.
His childhood should be explored more as well. I don’t think the piano would play much of a role in his character considering it’s not as important to his story like Toya’s is, but you can’t tell me that kid, who was mostly alone in the house due to Saki’s hospital visits, didn’t have any leftover effects, if anything I think that’s the reason for him being able to be naturally independent. I’m pretty sure it’s canon his SEKAI formed very early like Mafuyu too, somewhere in his childhood if I remember correctly. If it’s true it would also be a great opportunity to get to know him more through the perspectives of Miku (& KAITO) when he was younger as well as get some world building on the concept of SEKAIs.
