African Canvas Margaret Courtney-Clarke
The Art of Africa is a casualty of colonial exploitation, surviving principally in the museums of other countries. ~ Nadine Gordimer
“My objective in this work is to document an extraordinary art form - vernacular art and architecture in West Africa - that is not transportable and therefore not seen in museums around the world. It is an attempt to capture the unseen Africa, a glimpse into the homes and into the spirit of very proud and dignified peoples. In much the same way as I photographed the art of Ndebele women, I have drawn on my personal affinity for the art itself, for methods, design and form, rather than the socio-anthropological or political realities of a people or continent in dilemma. These images portray a unique tradition of Africa, a celebration of an indigenous rural culture in which the women are the artists and the home her canvas.”

*-*!

Experiments in Motion
“Experiments in Motion is a research initiative conducted by the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP), in collaboration with Audi of America and LowLine. The aim of the initiative is to explore new forms of urban motion and new spaces for mobility, with special emphasis on New York City.
Students from the program have spent the summer researching all transportation systems in New York City, exposing the potential of underground spaces. Three studios have researched different aspects of movement in contemporary cities: Paradigms in Motion, Design in Motion and Participation in Motion. A fifty foot floating model of Manhattan made from aluminium displays Manhattan’s road infrastructure, while the plexiglass below presents a never before seen view of the architectural volumes of every subway station on the island. A network of subways, tunnels, bike lanes and bridges are presented as flows of movement, revealing a new reality of the city life – it exposes the city as an interconnected system for mobility.
The exhibition marking the end of the first year of Experiments in Motion will feature nine different projects that explore ideas about the future of New York transportation. It will be open to the public at the Essex Street Warehouse in New York City September 15-27.”

Chocolates like a set of oil Paints Tubes by Nendo
Photo © Ayao Yamazaki.
Almost six years have passed since Nendo’s “sweet” collaboration with patissier Tsujiguchi Hironobu which dazzled us with ingeniously conceived Chocolate-pencils, not to mention the unique pencil sharpener used to grate chocolate shavings onto Tsujiguchi’s desserts. Following on from these delectable creations, Japanese based studio Nendo recently designed a limited quantity of chocolate-paints for the Seibu Department Store in Japan.

Grand Facade | Marlon de Azambuja | Via
Sometimes, all you need to create some magic is some magic markers. In a new series called Gran Fachada (“Grand Facade” in English), Madrid-based architect and designer Marlon de Azambuja works this marker magic on color photographs of famous museums around the world, from the Whitney to the Pompidou and the Tate Modern. Using a marker to black out sections of these images, he reveals fluorescent color-negative line drawings, which would probably look amazing as velvet black-light posters. Thin outlines of color expose where the contours of an architectural rendering would be, the intricacy of which approaches that of the buildings’ original blueprints.

There is a tendency to say that someone can or should be an architect because it draws very well, and that is not the basis of an architect. The basis of an architect is how to know dreaming
