The Ultimate Guide To Potion Bases
The Ultimate Guide To Potion Bases

The Ultimate Guide to Potion Bases

We all spend so much time thinking about the correspondences of the actual ingredients that go into our potions that we often forget to think about what the potion base represents! (At least I do.) It would be nice to have a list of all the various liquids that can be used in place of water. Naturally, I can’t think of everything but I think this is a pretty good starting point! What else can be used? Eventually, at some point down the road, I will compile all these thoughts into a book on potion making and want to include this! Keep in mind that these are my own correspondences. Let me know if you disagree or if you’d change anything up! Let’s see how big we can make this list. Also, I should probably note that not all of these liquids can be ingested. (Obviously.)

The List

Vinegar: Used for cleansing and purification potions.  Lemon Juice: Used in hexing, cursing, or revenge potions.  Cranberry Juice: Used in love potions. Apple Juice: Used in healing, knowledge, and youth potions.  Ammonia: Used in banishing, cursing, purification, and protection  Red Wine: Love potions and potions dealing with death and the afterlife.  White Wine: Used in platonic love potions as well as success brews.  Rum: Used in potions involving spirit work.  Whisky: Another good base for potion work.  Vodka: A good base for work involving rapid banishing.  Laundry detergent: Good for cleansing potions.  Oils: Used to speed up a process.  Molasses: Used in potions intended to slow a situation down.  Rubbing Alcohol: Another good base for cleansing and purification. Hydrogen Peroxide: Used in healing potions.  Milk: Used in potions to promote sleep and peace.  Sour Milk: Used to cause nightmares or in potions designed to torment. Orange Juice: For potions of solar importance, healing, success.  Soda Water: Used in potions designed to encourage laughter and giddiness.  Ginger Ale: Used in health or healing potions.  Olive Juice: Used in peace potions.  Honey: Used in potions to sweeten up another’s disposition. Syrup: Used in abundance and prosperity potions.  Beer: Used in potions intended to induce slumber.  Clam Juice: Used in aphrodisiacs.  Cough Syrup: Used in healing potions and to make someone ‘cough it up.’ Soy Sauce: Used in protection potions. (Thanks Lexa Rosean for this one!) Pineapple Juice: Used in abundance potions and fidelity potions.  Coconut Milk: Used in spiritual and magical cleansing potions.  Ice: Solid first, then melted for transformation potions. Coffee: Really, a potion in and of itself in my book. Vanilla Extract: In small amounts, used in passion potions. Witch Hazel: Used in communication and cleansing potions.

What else can you all think of?

Witch Tip: Book of Shadows

Witch Tip: Book Of Shadows

In your book of shadows is where you record your spiritual journey. For the most part, “book of shadows” is a Wiccan term, but there are other magickal practitioners who use this term to name their journals.

Some call their journal a “grimoire” or even “book of twilight,” “book of days,” etc. It’s up to you if you want to give your journal a particular label.

You can enter anything you want into your BoS. Your thoughts, your beliefs, how you view a god and goddess or universal energies, the pantheon you might choose to work with, your magickal name, what elements you feel closest to, the visions you have while meditating, your experiences with astral travel, your experiences with your spirit guides, your celebrations and seasonal rituals, your herb correspondences, the changes in your beliefs as you grow. EVERYTHING magickal and spiritual is fair game.

It’s your book, you choose what you add.

You can also write the dates that you perform your rituals and spells in your BoS. You don’t have to write out all your spells here, but you might consider it a good idea to do so. Record what works for you and what doesn’t.

You might choose to write out spells or rituals in your journal and if you choose to memorize them, writing them out is a good way to do it.

You can even write out how you feel before and after performing spells and rituals.

Anything can be used as your book of shadows, or journal. Loose notebook papers, a diary, a binder, etc. Whatever you can get your hands on.

When I first had interests in magick, I found a journal at a local book store that was completely blank inside and it looked like an antique. I chose this as my first magickal journal. I filled it up rather quickly because I used it as a regular journal also. I’d enter thoughts of any kind, write about the places I travelled to, friends, boyfriends, song lyrics, etc.

You don’t have to be this extreme. I love writing out my thoughts now and then, so it was natural for me to fill my journal with so much information.

Take your time searching for the right book to use.

Your journal, or book of shadows, will probably be with you for many years to come.

But keeping a magickal journal is an option and not absolutely necessary.

You decide if it’s best for you.

Traditional Soul Cake Recipe

These cookies are a very old fashioned cookie. Soul Cakes are the started what we know today as trick of treating. They were handed to children/beggar’s in Europe on Halloween after they sang a little tune called “A soulin” they were also left out as offerings to the dead souls and past loved ones.

Recipe:

2 ½ cups of well sifted all purpose flour 2/3 cups (about 10 tbs) softened butter ¾ cup Castor/Super fine sugar or regular sugar. (I’ve use it and it’s just fine) ½ tsp nutmeg ½ tsp cinnamon 1 beaten egg 2 tsp vinegar Sultanas to decorate (u can also use raisins, or dried cranberries as a substitute. I recommend the cranberries 😊)

Sift flour to ensure no clumps. Add softened butter and rub the butter into the flour completely with your fingers till dough is a crumble like consistency. Add sugar and the spices and mix well with a spoon Add beaten egg. Mix with a spoon then hands to form the dough. For extra moister so the cookies don’t fall apart, add 2 tsp vinager. And knead dough again fully mixing the vinager. Form dough in a giant ball, set in a bowl and cover the top of the bowl with cling wrap and let the dough sit for 30 mins.

After the dough has sat, lightly coat your surface in flour. Roll out dough and cut into larger sized circles. (I didn’t have the right cutter so I use the top of a decent sized drinking glass) take a butter knife and cut cross like shape into the top of the cookies like what’s show above and decorate with the dried fruit you choose.

Bake on 350’ F for about 15-20 mins till bottoms of cookies are golden brown. 15 was perfect for my oven.

Enjoy! Leave out as offerings or drink with a hot glass of pumpkin tea or cider!!

Happy Halloween!!! 👻🍁🍂🍃🍫🍬🍭🎃

Foodie Friday: Tiramisu!

Foodie Friday: Tiramisu!

Image credit: Olive Garden (no, this won’t be the Olive Garden recipe…) Ingredients:

-6 eggs, separated -Fresh espresso -Mascarpone cheese -6 tbsp sugar -2 tbsp amaretto -Ladyfingers -Cocoa powder for dusting

1) In a bowl, use a hand mixer to whip three egg whites and 3 tbsp sugar into stiff peaks. In a second bowl, mix all egg yolks and remaining sugar until pale yellow and thick mixture.

2)Mix the mascarpone with the yolk mixture until incorporated. Then, carefully fold in the meringue 1/3 at a time.

3) Mix the amaretto with room temperature espresso, and soak the lady fingers in it for a few seconds. Layer them into a dish. Then, carefully add a layer of the mascarpone mixture.

4) Smooth out and refrigerate 4-6 hours until it sets (about 38° (Fahrenheit)).

5) Dust with cocoa powder and serve!

*Chef’s Note: If you are making this in the United States, it’s best to use room temperature eggs. Ensure that they are pasteurized and allow them to warm up before making this dish. Elsewhere in the world, where eggs can be safely kept at room temperature, this is less of an issue. Also, the fresher your espresso, the better. If you don’t have the equipment necessary to make fresh espresso, pick some up from a nearby coffee shop - it needs to cool, so the ride home is perfect for giving it the chance!

Magical Ingredient!

So when it comes to tiramisu, my coworkers and friends and family know that I go crazy for it. Before I started making some more conscientious decisions regarding my diet, I would buy a tiramisu to go with my lunch every single day. It got to the point where the servers didn’t even have to ask what I wanted for lunch, because I was ordering the same thing - soup, salad, and tiramisu. The only time that would change was if we were going through our autumn promotions (in which case, it was pumpkin cheesecake every day). Though it’s been some time since I’ve ordered it at work (nowadays, I’ll usually snack on dried fruits instead), my love of this decadent cake hasn’t waned. A delicious dessert with espresso-soaked ladyfinger cookie encased in a layer of set creamy custard, topped with a bittersweet cocoa powder, this dish was nothing short of enchanting.

But, the restaurant I work in has a lot of Americanized foods. As much as I enjoyed the tiramisu there, it was nothing compared to homemade traditional versions made in true Italian style. By this, I mean that the signature of Italian food is making the most of very few ingredients. And when done right, this dish has only six or seven ingredients in total, and tastes so much better than what you can get in your local American “Italian” joint.

As anyone would say, the espresso is key in making a good tiramisu. But there’s another ingredient that many leave out (and in America, you’ll find so many variations that leave it out and use vanilla extract instead). Amaretto is a sweet liqueur that truly shines in this dish, as a natural pairing with both coffee and chocolate. And while I’ve talked before about the use of alcohol in witchcraft, amaretto deserves a little moment in the spotlight.

Where many drinks are fermented from fruit, hops, or even straight up sugar (like rum), amaretto is made with a base that includes almonds, peach pits, or apricot pits. This gives it a sweet flavor with a slight bitterness from which its name is derived (amaretto is a diminutive of the Italian “amaro,” meaning bitter, making the name translate as something similar to “a little bitter”).

The drink’s name is unmistakably Italian, and indeed the liqueur originates in Saronno, Italy. According to legend, a church here in the 1500′s commissioned artist Bernardino Luini to paint its sanctuary with frescoes. In need of a model to help him depict the Madonna, he turned to a beautiful young innkeeper. A relationship blossomed between the two, and as she was touched by his affection and thoughts regarding her beauty, she wished to give him a gift. Due to her simple means, she chose to steep apricot pits in brandy and presented the resulting beverage to Luini, creating the first amaretto.

In cooking, we see amaretto used either by itself or as an additive, where its flavor adds an almond sweetness and compliments both coffee and chocolate. Meanwhile, it can also be used in savory meat dishes or as an adition to almondine sauce for fish and vegetables. In addition, it is sometimes added to whipped creams to give its signature flavor and sweetness. As a beverage, it is often consumed by itself or in a variety of cocktails, including the French Connection and the Godfather, where it is a main feature to the drink.

In witchcraft, amaretto can be used by itself as an offering, but its use doesn’t stop there. The legend regarding its creation is one of love, beauty, and art. Thus it can be incorporated into spells for inspiration, love, and glamour. Its sweetness lends itself well to sweetening spells, and spells for joy.

It goes without saying that the ingredients used to make it have a role to play in its magic, as well. Almonds are frequently used to attract abundance and prosperity, giving amaretto a role to play in money and prosperity spells. In addition, apricots are often associated with love, adding to amaretto’s perfect use in such spells. And peaches are frequently associated with love, longevity, and fertility. Thus, amaretto works well for these spells, as well!

As I’d mentioned before, amaretto can also be used as an offering - goddesses and gods linked with its properties may enjoy this sweet drink - but another use includes feeding spells. Give bags and jars a little extra “umph” by adding a sprinkle of amaretto to extend the life of your spells and to further empower them over time!

What other uses might you have for amaretto in your practice? Feel free to let me know via reblogs (if you’re reading this on Tumblr) or in the comments down below (if you’re reading this via The Witches’ Circle or The Crone’s Table on Facebook)!

Pumpkin Bread/Muffin Recipe for Samhain

I’ve already made these twice and it’s not even October yet, but they’re just too delicious not to make! Ingredients: Dry - •1 1/3 cups all purpose flour •1 ½ cups white sugar •3/4 tsp salt •1 tsp baking soda •1 ½ tsp ground cinnamon •1/2 tsp ground nutmeg •1/2 tsp allspice •1/2 tsp ground cloves Wet - •15 oz canned pumpkin •1/3 cup of water •2 eggs •1 tsp vanilla extract •1/4 cup vegetable oil

Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees, grease two loaf pans, or two muffin pans (I normally make mini muffins, for larger ones you may only need one pan) 2. Stir flour, sugar, salt, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves together in a large bowl 3. Whisk together pumpkin, water, eggs, vanilla, and vegetable oil together in separate bowl 4. Gradually pour wet mixture into dry while whisking until everything is well mixed (orange batter) 5. Divide batter between loaf pans or scoop into muffin pans and bake in preheated oven until top is golden and springs back when lightly pressed, in loaf pans about 50-60 minutes (according to original recipe, I would put in for about 30-40 and check), in muffin pans about 15-20 minutes and then check

Recipe: Josh’s “Feel Good” Tea

We’ve all had those days when we’re so sick we don’t want to do much. Between fits of rather painful coughing, sniffling, achiness, and difficulty breathing, I knew that I needed a good strong tea to help kick this flu in the rear. And that’s how I came to create my “Feel Good” blend - a nice, strong tea that makes you feel calm and relaxed before promptly knocking you out for a good nap.

Ingredients: -1 tbsp peppermint tea -1 tsp chamomile -1.5 tsp rosemary -1 tsp lavender -Honey (raw recommended) -pinch ground cinnamon -Boiling Water

Combine all of your herbs in a sachet and steep in the water for anywhere between 3 and 10 minutes for a strong tea. Add honey to taste and sprinkle a little cinnamon on top. Enjoy!

Witchy Notes: Peppermint is great for pain relief from coughing due to the menthol, chamomile helps to relax and encourages sleep. Rosemary is a great cough suppressant and also helps to ease aches and pain. Lavender helps to induce calm, allowing you to breathe easier. Honey and cinnamon both have antibacterial properties and are excellent health ingredients. Enchant your ingredients ahead of time as you see fit, so that your tea will have a bit of magic all to its own!

Honey Lavender Bread

submitted by @materiamystica

Honey Lavender Bread

½ cup Greek yoghurt ½ cup plain flour 1tsp baking powder Ÿ tsp salt 1 tbsp dried lavender 1 tbsp honey 1 egg, beaten

The intent is to increase mental clarity and connection. To clear your spiritual and mental brain fog so that you can think and see more clearly again. To improve clarity of vision and connection to your heart’s desire. Lavender is employed to stimulate clarity and connection, cleansing, memory, passion, peace of mind, healing, love, passion and retention. With the honey for added sweetness and stickiness to make visions all the more sweet, and memories stick more permanently. Harvesting your own lavender can also be intended to honour Lammas, too!

1. Mix everything in a bowl and preheat the oven at 350 F. 2. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead adding more flour until it’s no longer sticky and has formed a nice stretchy bread dough. 3. Put into a floured loaf tin. 4. Brush top with egg wash. 5. Bake in the oven for 20-30 minutes until a golden crust has formed and a skewer comes out clean. 6. Slice and enjoy!

Witch Tip: Samhain

Witch Tip: Samhain

This sabbat is held on October 31st.

This celebration is to honour the  dead, and for speaking to people who have passed over. Divination is heightened  on this night.

The veil between the worlds on this night is at is weakest, which is  why it is held in honour of the dead, or some say ancestors.

Now is the best time to speak to the dead. The first half of the year is about the outer world and the second half is about the spiritual realm.

Any spells for making a long-distance romantic relationship stronger? All the ones I can find seem to be for close-distance lovers :c

Before doing any spells, I suggest that you keep doing every day things in order to make your relationship stronger. Do what you can to talk regularly, schedule Skype dates where you can talk or watch movies online together. Maybe play some online games together, if that’s what you’re in to.

These were all found on my blog. Please be sure that you are thoroughly searching my blog and tagging system before asking for any spells or resources.

Annoyances

I'm starting to notice that a great amount of "goth" blogs turn out to be Satanic blood covered kinky porn who listen to Soundcloud rappers😒. my thoughts: Wtf!? where the hell are my brethren who are real Goth and want to talk about horror movies and books, share and describe Post-Punk/Goth rock/Darkwave/Deathrock albums, complement makeup and discuss clothing while our excitement of Halloween builds over the aroma of teas and literature
