I've seen people remark on how awkward the 1967 scene is and that is so frustrating because, for me, it is one of the most emotionally resonant flashbacks in the entire series. It is so multifaceted and ripe with implication and that assertion is baffling. As though just because this conversation appears to be hard for them, it must mean that there has to be some sense of weirdness or awkwardness between them?

This scene feeds heavily into my theory that 1941 ended in some sort of aborted romantic moment between the two, most likely initiated by Crowley. Aziraphale can barely stand to look at Crowley because the very first moment he looks him in the face, he can't stop himself from giving him this hooded eyes, barely contained look of longing.

I've Seen People Remark On How Awkward The 1967 Scene Is And That Is So Frustrating Because, For Me,

The next thing we see is Aziraphale immediately launching into a statement about his fear for Crowley's existence that is as brutally sincere as it is heartrending. His eyes are wide, his voice is heavy with emotion, and it's clear that he is terrified beyond belief to lose Crowley. Even as he acquiesces and gives him the holy water, you can see that he wants to take it back and deny him it all over again.

Then, of course, Crowley asks if he can give him a lift, which is definitely something that they both know is a totally different question than what lies on the surface, given that they're mere feet from the bookshop and at first Crowley frowns so deeply that it's almost cartoonish but a moment after Aziraphale turns him down you get this glimpse of very real sadness:

I've Seen People Remark On How Awkward The 1967 Scene Is And That Is So Frustrating Because, For Me,

Aziraphale sees it for what it is and in an attempt to comfort him, without being able to do what currently seems impossible to him, shares a fanciful but resigned fantasy about spending time together unbothered and unrestrained, all to the tune of these tight little, loving smiles:

I've Seen People Remark On How Awkward The 1967 Scene Is And That Is So Frustrating Because, For Me,

When he asks again, you can just see Crowley's desperation for Aziraphale not to go. It's hard to say how long they'd been apart, but it's safe to say that for them, that previous interaction likely is very fresh in their minds.

I've Seen People Remark On How Awkward The 1967 Scene Is And That Is So Frustrating Because, For Me,

Aziraphale has always been more fearful than Crowley when it comes to their feeling for each other. You could even potentially look at the holy water as a metaphor for their relationship. In his expressions of concern about The Arrangement, Aziraphale has always been remarking on how Crowley could be destroyed, similarly to his words here. So when he's telling him, "You go too fast for me, Crowley," what he's really saying is, "I'm terribly afraid and I'm not ready to take that step if it means that I could lose you." And it's plain to see by the wistful look on his face that it pains him greatly to say it:

I've Seen People Remark On How Awkward The 1967 Scene Is And That Is So Frustrating Because, For Me,

The scene so quickly cuts to Crowley looking intensely at the holy water after Aziraphale has left the car (as if trying to convince you that that was the real point of the scene) that it's easy to miss this devastated expression on Crowley's face:

I've Seen People Remark On How Awkward The 1967 Scene Is And That Is So Frustrating Because, For Me,

There's no look of perceived rejection on his face. Just a somber look of resignation. There are so many barriers in front of them, and I think that Crowley was willing to risk it but understood that Aziraphale wasn't ready to.

This is the most honest and laid bare we ever see these two be when it comes to their emotions. There's so much being said without being said and even their actual words (i.e. Crowley remembering exactly the amount of time when the 'fraternizing' conversation happened) are so full of emotion that it might even be a bit hard for some people to watch.

It's not awkward. It's just that the scene is just so incredibly earnest and heavy with coded language that it's easy to be swept up by the fact that the two aren't engaged in their typical banter and bickering. What we truly have here is an incredibly difficult and loving conversation between two people who are stuck in a seemingly impossible situation.

Me: I wonder if Neil will give Aziraphale a line where he goes on about how handsome Crowley is

Me: However if he doesn’t, I believe in Michael Sheen

MAGGOTS. GO. SLEEP.

Can't believe I'm doing this again but I know a lot of your timezones and I know MANY OF YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE AN AWAKE PERSON RIGHT NOW.

AND A LOT OF YOU, IT MAY BE DAYTIME BUT YOU'RE SLEEP DEPRIVED. MMHM. YOU AS WELL.

Yes, you, reading the fanfic, we've all been there, close the tab. It's something to wake up to and read in the morning or after your nap.

You watching the David Tennant video on youtube, hush now, close it. I can assure you that he will still be there when you wake up, more gender than ever. So will Michael Sheen.

You authors writing the fic, we love you for your effort but we need you to be healthy and alive okay? Same for you artists, yes, it looks beautiful, put it aside. You'll see it better after sleep. All you editors, too.

All of you. The science students, the musicians, the retail workers, the dreamers, the weirdos, the nurses, the doctors, the lovers, the oozing slugs through life folks, the zombies, the adults, the retired, the teenagers, all of you. Get some sleep.

If you cannot now, take a hug, or a smile if that's more comfortable. When you can, go to sleep.

When you can, shut your eyes, and I promise we will be waiting on the other side.

Here's all my love for you *hands it over carefully* there, it'll keep you safe while you dream.

I think the religious satire in good omens is so clever like I could literally talk about it forever. Especially the contrast between Aziraphale and Crowley. My favourite way to explain it is that Aziraphale represents the top to bottom thinking whilst Crowley represents the bottom to top thinking when approaching religion. Top to bottom thinking is essentially starting with the answer and twisting the question to fit. This is really common in real life bible-bashers. Here, the answer is always God. God always knows what is good, what is right and why anything happens at all. Why must the world end after 6,000 years? Because God said it should. Why must an eleven year old boy be the vehicle for Armageddon? God. Why can't an angel and a demon be friends? God wouldn't want it that way. Aziraphale is so indoctrinated by this mentality that it seems obvious to him. It entirely baffles him when Crowley doesn't subscribe to this way of thinking as well. Bottom to top thinking is beginning with the question and then finding the answer - this way of thinking is why science always prevails over religion in a structured debate. Why is the world ending after 6,000 years? Because Heaven and Hell both think that it should. What can be done to stop an eleven year old boy from being the vehicle for Armageddon? Neutralise him. Why is Crowley, a demon, close friends with an angel like Aziraphale? Because he enjoys his company and companionship. Crowley is like a projection of Aziraphale's future. It's even more than that, too. Crowley is all the people who got out. Who grew up/lived in in a toxically religious environment who have moved on and become disillusioned with God and with religion. Aziraphale is all the people still trapped in that environment that know that's not where they belong, but stay because they don't know anything else. It's a genius allegory for toxic mindsets some Christians live by and I am honestly obsessed with it.

I hate how some people after season 2 are just putting hate on Aziraphale. I mean, he in fact, left the Crowley, but he had his own reasons as well, didn't he? Aziraphale have a very compliceted relationship with heaven but he is in fact an angel and he want to belong there OAAAAAHHHHH—

I Hate How Some People After Season 2 Are Just Putting Hate On Aziraphale. I Mean, He In Fact, Left The

Quick frame from animatic, u can find it on my instagram for example :) chestnut.racc (quick self advertisment haha)

Anyway, those kind of videos where people are insulting Aziraphale or smth like 'me after s2' and the video of taking of his face or covering them all on some kind of placats. I'm shittin myself. I know that thats grief after the ending but... Man his whole life or more like existance is not ONLY about Crowley in fact :/

Look how we get a chance to speculate why did he do that? What was his reasons? I think that the ending of Good Omens was (not only just marketing catch (that dramatic pause for a kiss and 'betrayal') but also a planned procedure? I love them both [Aziraphale and Crowley] equally so you shouldn't think this is a desperate attempt to protect your favorite (wha de duck I am saying, this series have a few months now so it is not a fresh topic... For me it is oh goddd ANYWAY)

Alr, here is another image so you won't go so quickly and read all that shit or not

I Hate How Some People After Season 2 Are Just Putting Hate On Aziraphale. I Mean, He In Fact, Left The

Hkhm... Let me give yall a wholeass essay in my second language.

Kidding! Not so extreme. Haha. Anyway. Those are the possibilities why Aziraphale decided that he should leave to heaven. Of course, there could be a few. Or everything. Or none. It's just my personal opinion :)

Again, assumptions, personal opinion, don't want to offend anyone. Thing up⬆️ that's the part where you can argue with me, debate maybe. Whatever. Thing down, I gues bunch of headcanonc? I don't know, they are theories? You can as well say what you think!!⬇️

Goosh, sorry for the mess. Lets start already. Yeah. Uh. Right. Right. Alright. Why Aziraphale chose heaven?

1. Aziraphale overall is an angel... Literally... So uhm he is naturally connected with God, wich he as well worships. He don't have to stand with heaven, but he still has a deep bond with good. Leaving the heaven would be, right, a great decision for his wellbeing. It's clear that he's not on their side. But he did not left his God. Saying 'no' to Megatron would be something that would make him feel terribly guilty and overall devasted, as he would disobey his own moral code and he would gave up a part of himself, I suppose.

2. For 6,000 fuckinf years he had been arguing with himself about feeling for Crowley, right now doesn't matter if platonic, romantic. He was renouncing Crowley so many times that he don't know him, he's not his friend. Yet he could not resist, but be with that redhead. Don't you think that he was having some, oh I don't know, moral crisis? Imagine choosing between two most importanr things? The creature you love and, for Azi, a literall purpose of creation - serving God? Oh man, he was in this state for over 6,000 years. If he would say 'no' then, would he ever get another chance like that to habilitate? He was working so hard, for so long, but he didn't had to chose through all those centuries. Now he had. I guess it's logical, that he choosed his creator.

3. Clear and logical! If Crowley would be back to heaven, he wouldn't have to choose between two thing he loves. Ah you clever one :). Nah. He literally said that he wants to work with Crowley. What can I say more.

4. Obvioulsy, he did not wanted to chose what we know of we SHOULD from serial. And pervious point... And previous previous. It felt like he had been lost or something in it all. I mean, he needed to choose if he wants to take Crowley, if he wants to go back. He was rhinking about the kiss, probably about heaven, what would they say, what would they do. To him, to Crowley. What he should say to Megatron. I suppose he was impetuous with that decision. Imagine lying (he is a damn angel whaaa) to yourself for thousands of years and then just having to confess. Nah, he would like better to stay silent and still lie 🙂 oh god why he is so stupid. Crowley is also stupid. They both are!!!

5. He was mad. Similisr to previous point. He felt like he did not belong with Crowley, as he was devasted. And also Crowley ignored him as well, as Azi ignored Crowley. But i want to focus on thing that he said that he NEEDS him and begged to not to leave him. Easy peasy. No communication between those doveys.

6. He was afraid of loving Crowley as - what would heaven say? What would god say? Will they be happy? Will they be safe? Is it really possible for them to be together? Demon and angel?

7. He considered himself as a failure for Crowley 👍 after he said yes, when Crowley was always saying no.

8. He was afraid of the consequences refusing heaven. Like, he literally was making out with devil, then went o heaven, hell's fire couldn't kill 'him' (ik it was crowley but not for heaven), he was hiding Gabriel, he did not cooperated with heaven. There were a few times when he sinned... A lot. Uhm. Well,I DO have a reason to suppose this could have been some kind of test or something... Because what the hell? From archangel, later no one, then back to the archangel?
