actually do you think kurogiri's bar has a "It's been [ ] days since Tomura decayed something on accident" sign? this would be a nice fic prompt actually. probably worth a coffee or two. ;) ;)

the blatant bribery of this... and the fact that it’s working... (also this is just way cute and i just got home from being around my nephew so i’m very in the mood for baby Tomura shenanigans)

It comes from one of the parenting books Kurogiri was forced to pick up. He never criticizes All for One out loud, but dumping a child on him and making said child’s wellbeing his sole responsibility when Kurogiri barely knows how to take care of himself and his own needs was... not a choice expected from a man who claims to be the greatest villain mastermind in history.

Tomura’s quirk is an additional problem. He’s not allowed to wear gloves that would keep him from touching things with all five fingers, because All for One says he shouldn’t have to ‘shackle’ his quirk. Kurogiri doesn’t agree, but keeps silent as always. Accidents happen a lot. Tomura gets upset in the beginning, and Kurogiri distracts him with sugary snacks and video games - a stroke of luck, discovering video games as a sure way to capture Tomura’s attention and make him forget about the world for a while. They’re useful in keeping him busy when Kurogiri has to run other errands, and he barely ever has to pause to scratch at his neck and face when he’s playing.

Then, eventually, as he grows older and less terrified and more demanding, he stops getting upset. He knows Kurogiri will just replace what he destroys and clean up the dust every time with no fail. Game controllers, books, playing cards, chess pieces, glasses, utensils, plates, shoes, clothes in general - once, he decays his toothbrush fully on purpose because he hates brushing his teeth before bed.

So Kurogiri comes up with a strategy.

Tomura blinks up at the board hanging up on the wall beside the bar, right next to the screen All for One uses to speak to them. “What’s this?” Kurogiri doesn’t bother answering that question. Tomura can read. He’s made sure the writing is very easily legible. ‘It has been [ ] days since Tomura decayed something on accident’ is what it says. The blank in the middle leaves more than enough room for what Kurogiri has planned. He reaches into his pocket and calmly places a single, sparkly star sticker into the empty field. “This stands for one day,” he explains. He’s fully aware that not that much of Tomura’s destruction is accidental anymore, otherwise this strategy probably wouldn’t work and only stress him out more, but if a reward system can be used to counter his growing carelessness, then that will only benefit him in the future.

Tomura cocks his head. Attentive. Kurogiri feels something like smug satisfaction, though muted as most of his emotions are. It’s easiest to get through to Tomura with praise. Kurogiri refuses to be just the mindless servant who cleans up after him and feeds him. No, he’ll have a part in raising the boy, too.

“What happens when I break something again?” he asks.

Kurogiri shrugs. “The sticker goes away. And you have to start over.”

Tomura rounds on him, glaring. It would be intimidating if he wasn’t so small. “That’s not fair!”

“If you can make it to ten stars,” Kurogiri continues, undeterred, “There is going to be a surprise for you.”

That makes Tomura reconsider. Children really are all the same, even if they are in unique situations. “... what kind of surprise?”

Kurogiri puts a juice box on the counter. “A good one. Something fun. Perhaps a new game you’ve been wanting. Or a night without a bedtime. Or a trip to someplace fun.” He has a list of ideas already, and Tomura’s eyes light up a little.

He still says: “I could make you do all that anyway.”

Kurogiri turns away, acting nonchalant. “You could, but then it wouldn’t be a surprise anymore, would it?”

Tomura is silent for a long moment. “... fine.”

He makes it fourteen days on the first try.

___

The board comes out again under the worst circumstances, Tomura thinks. Because he’s twenty years old and doesn’t need stickers anymore, thank you very much. Not that he doesn’t still decay things when he doesn’t mean to, sometimes. Mainly in the mornings or too late at night, or when he’s aggravated.

He still balks at the sight of it hanging in its old spot on the wall where it was taken down from when he was twelve or so.

Kurogiri raises his hands in an attempt to signal his innocence, though he seems far too amused.

“Look what we found, Tomura!” Toga grins and bounces on her heels, pointing at the board. “It’s so cute, with the stickers and all! Sparkly!”

“Yeah, it’s adorable,” Dabi drawls, for once present in the back of the bar, a shit-eating grin on his face.

Tomura wants to hide. Or kill all of them. “... why do we even still have that thing?”

Kurogiri makes a noncommittal noise, and Tomura scoffs.

“We’re making more of them!” Toga says, gesturing over to where Twice is sitting on the floor, working on a cardboard sign that says ‘It has been [ ] days since Dabi set someone on fire.’ Next to that one ‘It has been [ ] days since Spinner talked about Stain.’ and ‘It has been [ ] days since Mr. Compress called himself ‘old’.’

Tomura glances at Dabi. He’s entirely sure that particular sign will end up burned to ash within a night.

It doesn’t.

But it also never ends up collecting more than two stickers at most, and when he peels them off, Dabi always flicks them at Tomura over the bar.

It’s long after the bar is lost, and the signs with them that they all manage to reach ten days in their individual categories, and that’s only because Dabi’s been sick for a while and hasn’t left the quarry safehouse for two weeks.

So they get pizza, and they eat it in Dabi’s room, and he pretends to be grumpy about it, and Tomura pretends to be grumpy about having to spend time with them, but when they end up passing out all around the room and Tomura is still awake, he leans his back against the bed and thinks about Kurogiri. He’ll tell him about their progress when they see each other again.

A pack of good dogs

You know what, the recent chapters left me in the mood for some Hunting Dogs analysis.

A Pack Of Good Dogs

As others (see the great analysis by @hamliet,  @linkspooky and @blackandwhitemusician), they are introduced as a counterpart to the ADA on the opposite side of the spectrum from the Port Mafia: the servants of the government, representatives of a blind justice devoid of empathy or mercy, attacking whomever they are unleashed at without questioning it, putting law and orders above the people.

But doing a re-reading … the biggest proponent of this amongst the Dogs is Fukuchi. He is the one who declares openly that he doesn’t believe in the ADA’s guilt, but he still has to hunt them down until they die or surrender, even encouraging Fukuzawa to do the latter so the Agency can get a fair trial and the Dogs can switch to defend them.

But the point is, Fukuchi is the traitor, he is also the leader of the Decay of Angels, the very organization that committed the crimes that the ADA is framed for. That advice is not the genuine if misguided goodwill of someone that’s blindly devoted to the law, it’s a trap to worsen the position of the enemies, knowing full well that they won’t be able to defend themselves.

All of the other Hunting Dogs, even if in varying degrees, are a lot less devoted to this ideal of Law Above All.

Let’s start with Tachihara.

A Pack Of Good Dogs

He’s the one we have known for the longest time, because of his infiltration in the mafia. He presented himself as something of a thug, a rude hothead who nevertheless managed to be part of a very special division, so he had to have some talent. He was also depicted as a true mafioso, loyal to his criminal family. So, the reveal that he was actually a spy came as quite the surprise.

As a Hunting Dog, he showcases quite a different personality: he’s more serious, posed, his speech more polite and respectful. The one thing that stays is his loyalty, and this is what creates his main conflict.

Hunting Dogs or Mafia? His dilemma arises from the fact that he got accomplishments and social relationships in both groups. He considers himself as defined by the orders he receives, and by obeying them, he acquired a respect for both the leaders he served, Fukuchi and Mori. Morality has no place here: while trying to understand if he truly is a mafioso or a government agent, he thinks to the bonds he has within the groups, at the standing he managed to acquire; the fact that one association ostensibly protects people and the other hurts them is not something he worries about.

Or rather- conventional morality. His ultimate decision is partly due to the fact that while he gives intense loyalty, he expects the same loyalty in return. The fact that Fukuchi was revealed as the leader of the Decay of Angels was the tipping point, because he had betrayed the Hunting Dogs that looked up at him so much.

Tachihara ended up acting on his personal feelings and values, not because of a blind obedience to the law.

Then, let’s take into consideration Jouno.

A Pack Of Good Dogs

… where do I even start with him?!

Right from the beginning, he is introduced as rude, ruthless in his pursuit of criminals, downright sadistic in psychologically breaking people, even just suspects, to extort a confession out of them. He looks like the ideal image of a merciless legal system that only cares about locking up criminals under the pretense of absolute justice … except for a couple things.

First, Jouno is the first to acknowledge that se ne sbatte altamente il cazzo he has little care for justice, and nobody cares that he does, either: he just enjoys seeing people terrified, and as long as they’re even vaguely suspected, the public opinion will claim that he’s doing the right thing, the necessary thing for everyone’s safety, and hail him as a hero. Nice middle finger at the concept of torture and ignoring the human rights of people involved in crimes from the authors, here.

Then, the second part. Fukuchi sees this, has likely seen Jouno behave like that for quite a long time now, and decides he would be an ideal new member for the Decay of Angels, now that, with Gogol and Sigma dead as far as he knows and Fyodor in a jail all the way in Europe, the organization is dwindling down in members. After all, Jouno doesn’t care about justice, right? He’s also a former criminal to boot, he joined the Hunting Dogs just to escape jail (like Tachihara, by the way). As long as he’s given the chance to torment people, he should jump on any wagon, right?

No. Jouno briefly pretends to agree, to get him to lower his guard and try a surprise attack. Why?

Because, while he genuinely is a sadist and doesn’t care about justice, he likes saving people. Just that: while in the Hunting Dogs, he found out that the serotonin release he got from seeing people saved was greater than the one he got from hurting them. It’s a pretty selfish motivation and Jouno doesn’t try to pretend otherwise; still, it’s a very far cry from the idea of a blind justice that ruthlessly pursues the criminals, it’s something much more human.

Now, onto Tecchou!

A Pack Of Good Dogs

He ends up partnered with Jouno in chasing the Agency, and he presents himself as a diametral opposite. Where Jouno has a no-nonsense attitude, he has a lot of quirks. Where Jouno is rude, he is always polite. Where Jouno is sadistic, he doesn’t enjoy violence one bit. Everything he does, is for the service of justice. He seems like a good candidate for the role of ‘law-obsessed antagonist’ … except he isn’t, either.

It’s the most evident when he and Jouno interrogate the cafe owner. The latter tries his usual psychological warfare tactics, figuring out that his employee Lucy is an ally of the ADA and he himself is an accomplice; he was about to make him confess by making him crumble, but Tecchou stopped him. His motivation? He admired the loyalty of Lucy and the cafe owners, saying that he wanted to see such noble characteristics rewarded. Those were good moral principles, and he wouldn’t have acted against those who displayed them; Lucy would have received no punishment.

If he had really put law and justice above everything, he would have thrown Lucy and the cafe owners in jail in an heartbeat, or possibly even killed them; instead, he goes by his own, personal principles.

Last but not least, we have Teruko.

A Pack Of Good Dogs

Well, what to say about her? She’s basically the crossover between Jouno and Tecchou from hell.

She’s violent and sadistic, alright. She has a lot of enthusiasm both in physically fighting Sigma and in deconstructing his view of himself and the world in general. But she’s also very careful not to hurt civilians (something that isn’t exactly a top priority for Jouno) and has quite interesting ideals behind this attention.

She talks about people ‘built for violence’ - herself included - as beings that, without the existence of law and order, would dominate other people, and comments that this would just suck; thus, by becoming an Hunting Dog and placing herself at the service of the government, she becomes an embodiment of this order, of this principle of protecting those weaker; and this is the reason behind all of her actions.

So uh, we found her! We found the person for whom Fukuchi’s statement could be true! Still, she has a very interesting reasoning for her ‘sticking to law’; and the time we see her put this worldview into practice, it’s to protect people who aren’t directly involved.

All in all, despite having been their commander for likely years, Fukuchi doesn’t seem to really know his subordinates. Even of Jouno, of whom he noticed the actual disinterest for the law, he didn’t realize the better inclination until he was betrayed by him.  That thing he went telling Fukuzawa was essentially a bluff to get him to surrender, and his subordinates have shown, time and time again, that they’re not the blind attack dogs everyone believes them to be: they’re people with their own minds and value, and I think that when push will come to shove, even the survivors, Tecchou and Teruko, will side with the Agency, the side that saves people, against Fukuchi and his tricks.

Thanks to anyone who bothered to read my ramblings!

►FIGHT PKMN ITEM RUN

---

Pokémon crossovers are never NOT fun, so I tried my own hand at some Dangan-Poké trainers!

The original angular designs are classic, but I have to admit I love the looser styles coming out of the newest games and anime. What I didn't anticipate is how hard it is to get those perfectly calculated 'cute' proportions right, pokémon artists have the ratios down to a SCIENCE. I planned to get this out around my birthday, but missed it by a week! XD

Since my main goal here was translating the danganronpa designs into bona fide pokémon trainer types; I'll admit I didn't think too hard about their pokémon partners. I only actually played the first few games so my expertise is kinda relegated to the original 151/251, with my knowledge of more recent generations lacking, so my bro helped me out with a few suggestions.

but for what it's worth - here's my logic:

Kyoko Initially this one was mostly aesthetics, but Absol does have uncanny observational skills coupled with a solitary nature. Makoto Lucky egg boy gets the lucky egg pokémon, but I also wanted the supposed 'pushover' to have a powerhouse, and Tyranitar needs a lot of attention to evolve. (geeze Makoto, how come you get to have 2 pokémon?) Taka What can I say, it's everyone's fave '''legendary''' police dog! (I'll come clean, I totally cribbed this from Chasml after reading 'My Real Test'; I cannot imagine Taka without an Arcanine) Mondo My bro calls Pangoro 'delinquent bear' so it fits Mondo well, but the idea Pancham refuses to evolve cos he knows Mondo loves the cute pre-evolutions is hilarious to me. Sayaka Primarina is an all singing, all dancing diva, just like the idol herself. Leon Zebstrika . . .zebSTRIKA . . .zebSTRIKA . . . STRIKE like in BASEBALL GEDDIT??? But also - ill tempered, physically talented with a punky aesthetic? Sounds like Leon. Celeste A stocky, grey, spoiled feline? That's not Purugly, that's Grand Bois Chéri Ludenberg Hifumi When I saw the similarities between Blissey and Princess Piggles I couldn't unsee it. Hina Cute, bubbly and an excellent swimmer? Describes Marill to a T. Sakura Whilst she definitely has fighter type pokémon on her team - Alolan Ninetales' style, grace and calm demeanour just reminded me of Sakura. Toko Although insect/bug types would suit her well; I think a lot of them are still too 'cute' - 'unpleasant' pokémon like Grimer or Trubbish mirror her extreme self-image issues. Byakuya I know Ditto suits TWOgami better, but a bit of meta here - a foreign language Ditto is the best way to breed Shinys which seems right up Byakuya's alley; with the obligatory 'Rich Guy Persian' for good measure. Chihiro What self-respecting computer whizz wouldn't dream of a constant portable power supply? Helps that Charjabug is also adorable. Hiro Unpredictably psychic, undefinable intelligence and contentious usefulness, am I talking about Hiro or the Psyduck? Junko Gothorita is called both "the Manipulate pokémon" and "The Witch of Punishment" in its pokédex entries . . . (plus, clearly a fashion icon to boot) Mukuro Pawniard will follow a Bisharp's orders with no mind to its own wellbeing, a perfect pawn if you will.

What Will You Do?

(and my favourite still continues to be this stupid fat rat, so there's no accounting for taste)
