I just saw Infinity War!

Posts containing spoilers (which will probably be posted starting tomorrow) will be tagged with “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Infinity War spoilers,” and “spoilers.” They will also be placed under a cut.

(Probably no one actually cares about spoilers at this point, but I’d rather not risk it.)

I didn’t think about it that way, but you’re right! That sort of indoctrination is clearly starting to have an effect on the vulnerable children at my school. My social circle has MULTIPLE so-called relationships that involve one boy and one girl, and this sort of propaganda is why they think it’s okay to label themselves like that. You would think that they would have learned after our group’s last one-boy-one girl “relationship” broke up that this lifestyle will only ever end in unhappiness, but then they look at our school curriculum and it confuses them. Honestly, controversial topics like heterosexuality ought to be left out of the school environment altogether. When we bring things like this into the school situation, it just sets up our children for unhealthy relationships.

omfg so today I saw a man and a woman holding hands in public, i mean i don’t have anything against heterosexuality but don’t flaunt it in front of me, think of the kids omfg

imagine: remus lupin, after the events of prisoner of azkaban, silently going up to dumbledore’s office, and throwing a frickin tantrum. “you told me not to pursue it! you told me he was guilty!”

“i did not know,” answers dumbledore, “no more than you did, remus.”

“I - DID - KNOW! I TOLD YOU! I TOLD YOU HE WAS INNOCENT AND YOU TOLD ME TO LET IT GO! you - i - TWELVE YEARS HE ROTTED IN THAT CELL! TWELVE YEARS, AND YOU DID NOTHING! you - you………”

he draws himself up, stops shaking, and takes a deep breath.

“i quit,” he says bluntly, then turns and walks away.

As a history student, the most ridiculous thing that tumblr social justice warriors ever made up is “cultural appropriation”. If you only had mild historical knowledge of any cultural exchange that took place before colonialism (the ultimate times of evil oppression besides the third Reich) you’d realize that what you consider your culture is probably just a mashup out of thousands ancient cultural aspects from many different cultures. “Culture” itself is an umbrella term for basically anything that might be associated with a certain group of people - and it is both fluid and highly subjective. Your political system has been culturally appropriated from somewhere once, and so has your educational system, your economical system, your religion and your language. If you want to get mad about cultural appropriation, how about you start with those monumental cultural appropriations before complaining about white girls wearing dreads?

You can't really say for all of American students how much homework they get, I'd also rephrase that bc it sounds like you're saying they're at fault for doing what kids do which is explore their world and learn through social interactions. Today it includes social media and Netflix and it may not be the best use of their time but most teens can't function the same way as adults.

Right, that’s why I tried to qualify it by saying “at most schools.” My school is known for giving a lot of homework, and that’s largely what I’m basing my observations off of since I don’t spend that much time with people at other schools. (Other American high school students are welcome to chime in here! I don’t claim to speak for everyone.)

You may be right that it sounds like I’m blaming them. If you have suggestions for rephrasing feel free to send me them.

Watching a movie without subtitles: Gosh. These people sure are saying words. Should I rewind to try and catch that sentence? Nah, I just did that and also I can guess from context what they said.

Watching a movie with subtitles: whY ARE THEY TALKING SO SLOWLY. I’ve finished reading the dialogue? and yet there is not more dialogue? This is ridiculous.

so a lot of fantasy settings do the thing where there’s one or two or maybe three human societies, all based on European cultures unless they’re bad guys, and then the non-human cultures are all based on non-European cultures, like orcs will be loosely based on Mongols and there’ll be an animal race with superficial Native American trappings.  And for many reasons this can get really annoying.

But what if we turn it around?  There’s an awful lot to explore if we stick a different angle on it.  I want to see a thing where the human kingdoms are based on, say, imperial Mali around the time of Mansa Musa and the Mughal empire, and then maybe the orcs are based on pre-Roman Gaul, and the marauding beastfolk raiders look like Polish winged hussars, and your secretive-and-xenophobic but wise-and-spiritual elves or whatever are based on all the most alien and unfamiliar bits of medieval Catholicism.
