Remus Does Not Now How To Exist In Groups (before The Marauders At Least) And Ends Up Following Them

people who think rjl would have really good grades have never been chronically ill and had to miss school consistently because of it. I'm sure he was smart! I'm sure he did really well on tests! but there has never been a character I'm more sure struggled to achieve the academic success that he was capable of.

Just some food for thought because I too have been seeing lots of posts about Remus being mean/not being mean, and my main thought is that there's a big difference between snapping at your friends when you're angry or tired or upset, and being degrading and verbally abusive!! I think 100% Remus could and probably would be snappy or sometimes a little unintentionally mean/maybe even intentionally mean when he's super tired or in pain or hurting. And yes, sometimes I think he could very well be capable of causing harm to his friends! But I do think he would feel really bad immediately, and would either apologize or avoid the person he was rude to for a bit out of guilt. I do not think remus is the type to be degrading and horrible to his friends—or to his partners—and then use his pain/exhaustion as an excuse. If anything, I think he would internally feel that the wolf makes him angry or mean, and that would outwardly cause him fight tooth and nail to be in control/not lash out at people

what i love most about wolfstar is how absolutely gone they both are for each other—and neither of them realizes it. like, sirius looks at the world through a keyhole shaped like remus. he thinks remus is the most beautiful, the funniest, the smartest person on the planet, and he’s convinced that only he truly understands remus’ nature. to him, remus is distant, a little too reserved sometimes, and he has no idea that remus walks around every day with an arrow through his heart, staring at sirius and giggling into his pillow at night.

and remus? he looks at the world through a keyhole shaped like sirius. to him, sirius is this celestial being with an overwhelming, magnetic spirit that’s impossible to resist. he thinks sirius is too nonchalant, too effortlessly charming with everyone—not knowing that sirius, if you looked closely, literally has heart eyes and is trying every single day to impress remus and keep his attention

i mean. they’re both head over heels. they don’t care about anything else. and they’re both stupidly convinced it would take some kind of divine miracle for the other to notice them (all of their friends are banging their heads against the wall because these two idiots clearly only have eyes for each other but are also blind as bats).

You reblog so many defensive posts when you like all the mainstream characterizations and ships in the fandom lol nobody's attacking you just because they talk about not liking something or they critique how the fandom represents a feminine man or how American-centered Americans are even in their writing and headcanons.

something about the only two widely hc-ed black women in marauders era (mary and dorcas) being the sexiest hottest eye-candied women in hogwarts (casanovas of gryffindor and slytherin respectively) & desi james potter being accused of "taking regulus' innocence" who is just generally infantilized and shown to be pure & remus being a minority who is portrayed to be aggressive and harmful and downright violent living up to that and being overbearingly dominant and borderline abusive to his white smaller, emotionally vulnerable partner who won't leave them & evan being the only marauders era man hc-ed as black (though occasionally) being constantly shown as violent and creepy and um . i cant talk about anyone else because there's no one else to talk about ,, but like . something about them

House elf speech patterns and the ‘happy slave’ trope

The way house-elves speak with their exaggerated, broken syntax, subject verb disagreements, and deferential tone bears an uncomfortable resemblance to the way enslaved people have been depicted in film, particularly in movies that glorify the antebellum south.

Take Winky’s syntax :

“But I knows Dobby too, sir!” squeaked the elf. She was shielding her face, as though blinded by light, though the Top Box was not brightly lit. “My name is Winky, sir — and you, sir — ” Her dark brown eyes widened to the size of side plates as they rested upon Harry’s scar. “You is surely Harry Potter!”

Then there’s Dobby:

“Dobby has traveled the country for two whole years, sir, trying to find work!” Dobby squeaked. “But Dobby hasn’t found work, sir, because Dobby wants paying now!”

Even Kreacher, who has a slightly different speech pattern still broadly speaks in the similar affected way.

“Kreacher did not see Young Master,” he said, turning around and bowing to Fred. Still facing the carpet, he added, perfectly audibly, “Nasty little brat of a blood traitor it is.”

This linguistic pattern is not unfamiliar. Compare it to:

Mammy from Gone with the Wind: Miss Melly, this here's done broke her heart. But I didn't fetch you on Miss Scarlett's account. What that child got to stand, the good Lord give her strength to stand. It's Mr. Rhett I's worried about. He done lost his mind these last couple of days

Or Uncle Remus in Song of the South. “Oh, I knows. I knows. I’m just a worn-out ol’ man what don’t do nothin’ but tell stories. But they ain’t never done no harm to nobody.”

The same tropes are at play. Stilted, infantilising speech. These films, particularly Gone with the Wind and Song of the South, glorify the antebellum South by presenting enslaved characters as devoted, content, even protective of their oppressors.

This is where the argument that house-elves aren’t slaves but brownies falls down. If house-elves were truly just magical beings with their own culture, their speech wouldn’t so closely mimic the linguistic markers of servitude used in films that softened the horrors of slavery.

Also intended or not this is a racialised coding that was once used to uphold and justify the absolute abomination of slavery and we should be critical of it.
