ok there’s really not much else to say on this one, sooo snippet!!

i am absolutely not writing this one in chronological order so they are already together in this snippet but it is a getting together fic, they start out as strangers and everything.

also this is almost entirely unedited.

Remus attempts to pick up where he left off like everything is normal. Because it is. A minor accident, that’s all it was. Standard. Run-of-the-mill. Accidents happen.

His boyfriends seem to disagree.

They’re both standing from their stools, and James is already reaching out to take his hand. Their fingertips brush, and he yanks his own back as if the touch is what burned him.

“Moony, baby, come on, let me see,” James says softly.

“I’m fine! I need to finish your drinks,” he replies, a bit snappier than he intended. He’s just…embarrassed. And stressed.

i promise they’re happy he’s just being dramatic 😭😭

okay hello i am finally answering this! sorry it’s taken me so long, i posted the ask game and then my life immediately fell apart lmao. this ended up being really long so answers below the cut :)

3. What’s your favorite line of dialogue?

Rather predictably, it’s this one: “‘Your gender is about you, not what other people think.’” It’s just…something that I struggle with myself, and that I’ve seen a lot of other trans people talk about struggling with too. Transition is complicated but I think doing it for yourself is so important.

4. What’s your favorite line of narration?

This isn’t a single line (how do people pick out single lines??? Impossible) but! This one: “It’s that Sirius accepts, and loves, the parts of him that make him trans. It’s that he helps remind Remus that […] it’s a part of his identity, one that he’s allowed to be proud of. Sirius loved Remus as a girlfriend and loves him equally as a boyfriend; and he loves Remus now not just as his boyfriend, but as his trans boyfriend.” This sort of gets at the same concept as the one above—I have so many thoughts and feelings about concepts of transition and passing and stealth and they’re all such complicated, nuanced topics that are different for everyone, but something that’s a big deal for me is trans pride and nonconformity. I don’t want to assimilate into cis ideals; I don’t want to pass as cis. Part of this is probably since I’m nonbinary so there aren’t really cis ideals for me, but I know binary trans people who feel similarly.

11. What do you like best about this fic?

The truth is the trans rep. You know this since I talked to you about it but I was really, really nervous about the trans rep in this fic. It feels the most truthful to my own experience, but it doesn’t fit with the popular cookie cutter narrative, the narrative that’s most easily digestible and understandable to cis people. And of course there’s nothing wrong with that experience but it’s not the only one. And it’s been so lovely to get comments from other trans/non-cis people saying that they relate to the rep in this fic too.

Aside from that, because I feel like I’ve talked an awful lot about the trans rep in this post, it’s just the way they love each other. It’s so soft and gentle and it was lovely to write and fun to revisit to pick out my favorite lines.

i want to write a chronic illness remus fic so badly but every time i try it starts to feel like a diary entry and i have a stop

mutual pining simply never misses. the yearning. the stupidity. the desperation while also thinking themselves alone with it. the rattling relief at the revelation. the way it works in so many scenarios— friends to lovers? a banger every time. casual hook-ups/friends with benefits while they both want more? show-stopping, spectacular, incredible. enemies who are so deep in denial it just makes them madder at each other? utterly unmatched every single time. slow burn, fast burn, burning while already fucking. mutual pining really just is that girl like truly who does it like her

"I write for my own enjoyment"

And

"I'm happy when people interact with my writing"

Are two sentences that can coexist!

a lot of fic rec lists focus heavily on long fics but here’s a shoutout to short fics they give so much snack-size joy i hate how writing short form is sometimes looked down upon it has its own challenges and deserves so much more respect and love because a well executed short fic can ruin your life in 20 minutes

In my humble opinion, a young rjl's favorite 3 flirtation tactics are as follows:

Wincing and stretching out his shoulders until Sirius offers to give him a shoulder massage

Writing silently about Sirius in his journal (it's a diary) alone in the corner of the common room, stealing looks at Sirius until he looks back, and then looking away so quickly he gets whiplash

And finally—his boldest, and most effective tactic—looking up at Sirius and batting his big brown eyes at him
