The reason for the season: Internship applications Apply now

Who are you looking for?

The person reading this, hopefully. We’re looking for smart, fun, humble people. In general, you need to be enrolled in college and have completed three semesters of coursework. But maybe you took your own path—tell us about it!

What’s the internship?

There’s a bunch. Go here for the full list: Engineering, Marketing, Data science, Business, Design, etc. If you don’t see something for you, keep checking. We’ll be adding more over the next couple months. And yeah they’re all paid—it’s serious work.

Where is it?

Mostly New York, the city of dreams. But also LA, the city of Angelenos.

When?

At least eight weeks. June-ish to August-ish—whatever your school schedule allows.

Why?

Seems like a weird question to ask.

How do I apply?

Go here 👈  Find an internship. Click apply. You’ll need a resume and cover letter so now would be a good time to meet your school’s career counselor.

<3 See you here!

Fuck Work

Economists believe in full employment. Americans think that work builds character. But what if jobs aren’t working anymore?

Fuck Work

James Livingston |  25 November, 2016

Work means everything to us Americans. For centuries – since, say, 1650 – we’ve believed that it builds character (punctuality, initiative, honesty, self-discipline, and so forth). We’ve also believed that the market in labour, where we go to find work, has been relatively efficient in allocating opportunities and incomes. And we’ve believed that, even if it sucks, a job gives meaning, purpose and structure to our everyday lives – at any rate, we’re pretty sure that it gets us out of bed, pays the bills, makes us feel responsible, and keeps us away from daytime TV.

These beliefs are no longer plausible. In fact, they’ve become ridiculous, because there’s not enough work to go around, and what there is of it won’t pay the bills – unless of course you’ve landed a job as a drug dealer or a Wall Street banker, becoming a gangster either way.

These days, everybody from Left to Right – from the economist Dean Baker to the social scientist Arthur C Brooks, from Bernie Sanders to Donald Trump – addresses this breakdown of the labour market by advocating ‘full employment’, as if having a job is self-evidently a good thing, no matter how dangerous, demanding or demeaning it is. But ‘full employment’ is not the way to restore our faith in hard work, or in playing by the rules, or in whatever else sounds good. The official unemployment rate in the United States is already below 6 per cent, which is pretty close to what economists used to call ‘full employment’, but income inequality hasn’t changed a bit. Shitty jobs for everyone won’t solve any social problems we now face.

No one is prepared for an era when editing DNA is as easy as editing a Microsoft Word document.

In April 2015, a paper by Chinese scientists about their attempts to edit the DNA of a human embryo rocked the scientific world and set off a furious debate. Leading scientists warned that altering the human germ line without studying the consequences could have horrific consequences. Geneticists with good intentions could mistakenly engineer changes in DNA that generate dangerous mutations and cause painful deaths. Scientists — and countries — with less noble intentions could again try to build a race of superhumans.

Lobbying, to most people, looks like bribery — the lobbyist who refuses to contribute to the reelection campaign isn’t going to get a meeting, much less an ally.

No member of congress wants to feel bought. What they want to feel is convinced. It’s the lobbyist’s job to make the members of congress ‘feel’ like they’re making the right decision, not just the decision they were paid to make.

Lobbying, persuasion, or interest representation is the act of attempting to influence the actions, policies, or decisions of officials in their daily life, most often legislators or members of regulatory agencies. Lobbying is done by many types of people, associations and organized groups, including individuals in the private sector, corporations, fellow legislators or government officials, or advocacy groups (interest groups). Lobbyists may be among a legislator’s constituencies, meaning a voter or bloc of voters within their electoral district, or not; they may engage in lobbying as a business, or not. Professional lobbyists are people whose business is trying to influence legislation, regulation, or other government decisions, actions, or policies on behalf of a group or individual who hires them. Individuals and nonprofit organizations can also lobby as an act of volunteering or as a small part of their normal job (for instance, a CEO meeting with a representative about a project important to their company, or an activist meeting with their legislator in an unpaid capacity). Governments often define and regulate organized group lobbying that has become influential.

Why You Can’t Trust Anything You See on the News (or on any screen anywhere!)

While this video creates the impression that this technology is new, intelligence and Hollywood have been using technology far-advanced to this for many years; possibly decades.

This is what a small team of computer scientists came up with – using facial capture and facial reenactment software, students in college are able to, in real-time, create facial expressions and even insert audio, to make you believe that people like world leaders are doing and saying things that are not happening - so imagine what’s available for use by the CIA, NSA, MOSSAD (etc.), and all of their mainstream media propaganda arms.

See this article, When Seeing and Hearing Isn’t Believing, from 1999 (nearly 20 years ago!), which details technology which can, in near real time, clone speech patterns and develop an accurate facsimile. All by taking just a 10-minute digital recording of someone’s voice.
