hello for the love of god hi. if you have a chronically ill/disabled loved one who is constantly flaking on plans, unable to attend events due to illness, please please please keep inviting them to things anyway. being excluded from events due to illness or the assumption that we won't be able to attend is the worst feeling, even if the assumption is true. a cursory 'hey we are planning to do xyz, i know this thing isn't always easy for you but we'd love to see you there if at all possible' truly means the world. better yet, make plans with your chronically/ill disabled friend in mind and help them navigate the accessibility of it all or choose what you do together. failing that, if you haven't explicitly been told to stop inviting them to things, continue to include them in your plans because being deliberately excluded hurts like hell

Gods above, I love me some Empire kids 💜

digital fanart of Beauregard Lionett from Critical Role, standing in a dynamic pose, caught in the middle of swinging her bo staff. she is a brown-skinned woman with dark hair in a braided mohawk, wearing a dark blue sleeveless top that exposes her midriff, dark blue pants, a red sash around her hips, long fingerless gloves with wiry geometric bracers over them, and a light gray cloak that's whipping around her in the wind. she is lit by the light of the little red moon Ruidus; behind her there is a dark teal colored sky and clouds of a dust storm.
digital fanart of Caleb Widogast from Critical Role, depicting him in the middle of casting a spell with a wide gesture of his hands; it looks like fiery red strings of a cat's cradle. he is a light-skinned man with dark auburn and gray wavy hair, and is wearing a dark leather duster, open in the front and revealing a book under his right arm and a number of various pouches; there is a purple scarf with a geometric pattern around his neck. he is lit by the red glow from his spell, and has the same dark teal sky and dust storm behind him.

listen, i enjoy campaign 3 but i know who my favorite daddies are :) (click on the pictures to enlarge them for more details! 💜 they're supposed to be viewed side by side but they look really small on mobile)

i'd wanted to draw Beau and Caleb portraits ever since i'd watched the c3 episode they appeared in (which i did like two days after it aired) and i'd been hoping to finish them before the mighty nein one shot but hadn't been able to in time. however, i have now! i'm only halfway through the live show but i do know that these designs do not contradict the official stuff too much, so i thought i could post them. i was very happy to see the empire siblings appear in c3 when they did, and it was a lot of fun trying to convey the solstice spookiness that i liked so much about those two eps 👀🔮

Writing Character Accents in Fiction

Hey there, thanks for the question! I speak English as a second language; most English speakers I encounter aren’t native (yes, including fictional people); thus, this is a concern I’ve explored personally when I write.

I think the core principle regarding accent writing is this: it shouldn’t be distracting.

For the same reasons why Stephen King prescribes the basic dialogue tag “said” rather than fancier alternatives like “whispered”, “shouted” or “screeched”, dialogue must be first and foremost easy to read. It must flow like a real conversation – the pace and tone are a lot more important than how specific words are being pronounced by the character.

Focus on what effect the accent has:

Using adjectives to describe their voice in general. Different types of English (American, British, Australian, etc.) will give off a different vibe, also partly dependent on how your character speaks in general:

Lilting: Having a smooth rise and falling quality; sing-song like. Welsh accent is often described as singing.

Posh: from a high social class. This is the term generally used to describe the upper-class British accent.

Nasal: this happens when the sound goes through somebody’s nose when they’re speaking. North American accents are more nasal than, say, British pronunciations.

Brash: harsh, loud, indicative of sounding a little rude.

Slur: speaking indistinctly; words merging into one another.

Using metaphors.

Her voice was cotton and fluffy clouds.

When he spoke, the ‘r’s scratched the insides of his throat.

Mentioning their accent with a brief example(s).

“Would you like to drink some wine?” she said, though her Indian accent gave extra vibration to her ‘w’s and ‘r’s, making the words sound more like ‘vould you like to drrrink some vine’.

“I want some chocolate.” His syllables were choppy and ‘l’s rather flat, saying ‘cho-ko-lit’.

Some Tips:

Don’t phonically spell out everything. Perhaps give a few examples in the beginning, but stick to standard English spellings.

Pay attention to word choice, slang, and colloquialisms.

An Australian person would say “tram”, not “trolley; “runners” instead of “sneakers”

A Canadian may refer to a “fire hall” – what Americans call a firehouse or fire station

If your character comes from a non-Enligsh background:

Use vocabulary from other languages.

“What time was the exam, ah? Two o’clock? Jiayou!” → putting “ah” or “la” at the end of sentences + Jiayou means “break a leg” in Singlish.

“I can’t believe that 4-year-olds have their own SNS accounts now.” → “SNS” is short for “social networking service”, a term used to refer to social media in Korea. This would a subtle difference – even though it isn’t technically Korean at all!

Transpose grammar from different languages.

For example, in French, plural nouns take plural adjectives (whereas in English, you would speak of ‘white cars’, not ‘whites cars’).

*Sighs in writer*

you know you’re a writer when

you spend 30 minutes choosing the perfect synonym for “said” only to change it back to “said.”

you google “how long does it take to bleed out” at 3 a.m. and now the FBI is probably watching you.

you write one sentence, stare at it, rewrite it 14 times, and somehow end up back at the original version.

“this scene is so important” but you have no idea what the scene actually is or why it’s important.

you come up with the best story ideas
 in the shower
with no way to write them down.

your characters feel like real people but also you’re like “who are these guys and what do they want from me?”

your brain says “start writing!” but instead you reorganize your desk, reread your notes, and spend two hours naming a side character who shows up once.

you’ve cried over your WIP exactly 67 times and will do it again because the pain is the point.

you reread something you wrote and think, “wow, did i peak as a writer three months ago?”

every writing session begins with the sacred ritual of scrolling social media, opening unnecessary tabs, and procrastinating until panic sets in.

you have no idea how long a chapter should be, so you just
 vibe.

you can’t watch tv or movies without mentally critiquing the plot, dialogue, and pacing.

your writing playlist is 98% vibes, 2% songs you’ll actually listen to while writing.

you keep a “murder notebook” but swear it’s not suspicious because it’s for your novel (probably).

the phrase “just one more draft” is your eternal mantra, even though you’ve rewritten this thing more times than you can count.

YO WRITERS

Stop what you’re doing right now and go write 3 sentences of your story.

Every time you see this, write 3 lines.

Reblog so other writers will do the same, let’s finish these damn stories.

Gauging an interest check because I really love doing diamond art but if I'm just doing it for me, I don't really need a thousand keychains no matter how cute they are. (Please let me make the cute things.) An example is below:

Nerdvana Crafts

Hello and welcome to Nerdvana Crafts! Where you can find handmade gifts for the nerds in your life! My name is Sly and I am a neurodivergent fiber artist who crochets amigurumi from a variety of fandoms. Each item is made to order, and may take 2-4 weeks to make and ship. Each item is also made in the presence of a cat so if you have allergies, please message me and I will do everything in my power to prevent kitty contamination. All of my creations are intended as fan art, and because I use a variety of patterns, their sizes will vary as well!
