atsushi’s way of moving on being to scream out all his feelings of hatred because for so long he’s been unable to find a voice against the orphanage director. akutagawa’s way of moving on being no longer thinking of dazai but of atsushi instead and changing his reason for living (think can you give me a reason to live?). their journeys for healing are different but they directly contradict the reason they were trapped in abuse—atsushi’s fear vs akutagawa’s desire for acknowledgement. sskk u moved me

“I am nothing in my soul if not obsessive” defines me. Without obsession, I experience profound emptiness.
Francis Abernathy is such a fantastic character to me, because he’s not outwardly violent like Charles, nor increasingly cold and self-serving like Henry, yet he is just as shallow. I often see the sentiment that his ending is so tragic and how he was forced into that unhappy, het marriage. As he expresses in his suicide letter, Francis ultimately succumbs to his own lack of moral strength and failure to act (“Forgive me for the things I did but mostly the ones I did not.”) Obviously I will acknowledge that the marriage situation was unfair — no one deserves to be ousted from their family for their sexuality. However, it really was not his only choice. Just as Richard comes to realise (and is quite disgusted by), Francis would rather remain trapped than have to get a job, provide for himself, and make his own life. It reminds me a lot of Julian’s ending, and how Richard says he could at least respect it if Julian had turned them in, since it would show some strength of character, but his running away only exposed how weak-willed he was all along. Perhaps Francis has a better moral compass than Henry, but his failure to use it renders him just as at fault for everything that happened. As always, Francis values his comfort over his happiness. That’s his fatal flaw.

Something I just realized, Odysseus calls Telemachus by his name throughout Act I. Then when he get back to Ithaca, anytime he references Telemachus he calls him a familial title.
“… and hurt my boy”
“You plotted to kill my son”
“Son.”
“Oh my son look how much you’ve grown. Oh my boy, sweetest joy I’ve known.”
“My son I’m finally home!”
Then he calls his son by name while they embrace.
“Telemachus. I’m home.”
I just think it’s interesting. It’s like he’s reminding himself of what his son‘s name is throughout the Trojan War and his journey home.
When he gets back, he’s letting everyone know he’s claiming Telemachus, and reminding the suitors that Telemachus is his son, and he is Telemachus’ father.
Finally, the first time he calls Telemachus by his name, is after the two of them have rekindled their relationship. (I Can’t Help But Wonder is basically the two of them sharing how he views the other.)
