Really powerful to me that truly Richard is closer to every Greek student besides Camilla despite his fixation on her—and in the end, the thing he has most in common with her is that they both were in love with Henry
behind every hot girl there is an unhealthy, slightly concerning, spiritual connection to a sad gay fictional character
I relate to Richard Papen only because I have an inauspicious need to be in-the-know about things it’d be better I didn’t understand and things that I’d otherwise have no desire to.
Unrelated,I also wasn’t included in things as a child.
“It's a very Greek idea, and a very profound one. Beauty is terror. Whatever we call beautiful, we quiver before it. And what could be more terrifying and beautiful, to souls like the Greeks or our own, than to lose control completely? To throw off the chains of being for an instant, to shatter the accident of our mortal selves? Euripides speaks of the Maenads: head thrown I back, throat to the stars, "more like deer than human being." To be absolutely free! One is quite capable, of course, of working out these destructive passions in more vulgar and less efficient ways. But how glorious to release them in a single burst! To sing, to scream, to dance barefoot in the woods in the dead of night, with no more awareness of mortality than an animal! These are powerful mysteries. The bellowing of bulls. Springs of honey bubbling from the ground. If we are strong enough in our souls we can rip away the veil and look that naked, terrible beauty right in the face; let God consume us, devour us, unstring our bones. Then spit us out reborn.” ― Donna Tartt, The Secret History
Richard Papen really started the book by saying he’s a compulsive liar and then just went “so anyway here’s what happened.”
Bunny Corcoran, an empath, sensing that they are not looking for new ferns.
Bunny Corcoran be like “I know a spot” and then scams you with a 300$ bill in an expensive restaurant
why is Richard sickly for like 95% of the book he's always complaining about being exhausted and faint and nauseous and riddled with headaches and his solution is LETS HAVE MORE PILLS AND ALCOHOL??

Life is short. Drink another coffee. Read another book. Listen to your favourite song again. Hug your mom. Laugh. Cry. Dance in the rain. Push your friend off a cliff because of a milkshake.

you can’t take these guys ANYWHERE !!!!!!!!
Richard in secret history is so funny being like “Judy poovey is such a shallow vapid stupid druggie for doing coke in a Burger King parking lot. Unlike me, I’m intellectual and deep and mysterious and also doing coke in a Burger King parking lot”
Reading tsh for the third time, I found this quote "and, since the Greek classes happened to meet in the afternoon, I took Greek so I could sleep late on Mondays." No fucking way this guy took a decision that changed his whole life and ended up being a murder accomplice because he hated so much to wake up early. And why is that so relatable?
Richard "Took a year of pre-med and still couldn't correctly identify his symptoms of pneumonia and hypothermia" Papen
Not too happy with this. However, I love them.

Am I the only one who thinks The Secret History would be way more interesting as a stage play than a movie? It could be put on in the same style as a Greek tragedy, taking inspiration from ancient performances. Or there could be constant rotating sets and backgrounds, but the mountains and the cliffs always being present onstage, reminding us that what no matter what Richard is telling us, and no matter how much Richard and the Greek class try to rationalize it, they will always be haunted by what they have done. THINK ABOUT HOW THE BACCHANAL COULD BE SHOWN
my theory for what henry whispered to camilla is "kitten, i'll be honest. daddy's about to kill himself"
“I am nothing in my soul if not obsessive” defines me. Without obsession, I experience profound emptiness.
my fav genre of books is called "what the FUCK richard"
benefits of learning latin
reading classical roman texts in original latin <3
it's so much easier to learn romance languages <3
be able to read latin inscriptions in medieval paintings <3
writing your journal entries in a dead language so no one will find out about the farmer you killed in the woods
understanding etymology and root words <3
I too react this way when the phone rings
"I'm gay" "I'm straight " ...okay? I'm nothing in my soul if not obsessive
