Kou to himself in the red house

Hey so op these tags are absolutely diabolical /pos

Little insight of my absolute favourite official art ever made and the meaning behind it (imo).

Let's start with this: it did not come out of nowhere. It splits an important interaction in two, a fundamental turning point for their relationship: Kou deciding to open up to Nene after the Severance (and the aftermath of that).

When Kou methaphorically points at his and Nene's very similar apples to asks a very important question.

"What are you going to do.../ What do you want to do?"

Did you think of a solution?

Arc after arc, Kou and Nene were proven times and times again that you can't just wish for the supernatural you care about to stick by your side. Because something always happens. Because they'll find a way to always slip from your fingers. Because Nene and Kou have the exact same kind of apple in hand: a supernatural they can't be with, not by the rules of their world. Hanako is the apple, Mitsuba is the apple.

And Kou has made his decision already.

There is no time left for the perfect solution to be figured out. Kou can't wait anymore for things to get fixed the right way. Of course, Kou aspires and will always try to reach for Absolute Victory. Why settle for less? Why giving up when something can still be done?

But that has no importance if his future with Mitsuba isn't secured first.

The taste of honey of the forbidden garden at reach is what Nene and Kou have in common; their sinful desire of what is forbidden to know the flavor of. And Kou's stare is anything but doubtful when he comes closer to take the first bite.

He knows a way to reach the apple, now. He knows how to get Mitsuba, in the end. A road with no way back, finally (in fact, a bite is enough to get banished from Eden, you can't undo it, the same way someone who died can't turn back to a human, not by their world's rules, at least.)

Because she has to have thought about it as well, right? A solution to their desires. A way to secure their happiness, no matter what happens around them, to them. They are the same, after all, so she will understand.

And so he tells her.

The art is placed here, cutting in half a question from its response: Kou and Nene are back to back, and while he looks straight ahead... Nene looks doubtfully in our direction, the apple right to her face, ...no intention to eat it yet. And that's it.

He doesn't really give her a chance at all to properly respond. To decide. To understand.

She answers the question with another question, with doubts and concern, and Kou not only doesn't have an answer for her but expected something totally different; he expected her to be like him, to understand instantly, without further questions. Because he didn't need any of those.

The one time Kou opens up to her ends as quick as it started: Nene answers wrongly and so he closes her off again, because he wasn't looking for her actual opinion, he was looking for her comforting presence next to him while taking the bite that he had already choosen to take.

I think it isn't just a coincidence that Kou went and faced all of his rotten desires right after this, in the Red House. Maybe Adam and Eve discovered the feeling of shame after the first bite, but Kou is facing it as if, by willingness alone, he had already set his faults in stone and is already paying the consequences of his sin.

Tsumitsukou headcanons !

Kou deals with two chaotic people who have various levels of approach. The worst is when they tag team him, because a Mitsuba who is backed by Tsukasa of all people is a recipe for disaster.

Kou cooks, Tsukasa sings, Mitsuba sits there to eat Kou’s food and bawl dramatically at Tsukasa’s rendition of some super sad song he sings using the spatula as a microphone.

Mitsuba can’t go “someone did this—“ without Tsukasa offering to hurt them and Kou stress cooking.

Mitsuba and Tsukasa go out shopping to judge people’s poor fashion choices, Kou included.

Kou makes them their favorite food when they’re feeling down.

Tsukasa would have a pet gecko.

Mitsuba would have a pet snake or parrot

Kou canonically has a cat so I’ll give him that. He’s very wary at Tsukasa’s house because his second pet is a fucking spider.

Tsukasa climbs trees for fun, then gets stuck, and calls Kou to help who then calls Mitsuba who films the entire thing.

They sleep on rooftops. Like, the shingled roofs.

And last but not least, Kou likes rpg games, Mitsuba likes simulator games / farming ones, Tsukasa unironically gushes about romance games but will watch horror playthroughs at 2am in the morning while eating popcorn.

A little timeline of Kou's traffic safety charm earring cause I noticed this recently and I think it's neat

He's had that traffic safety charm for a while, all the way back since he was 5, only back then he wore it hanging around his neck

Jumping to first day of middle school, he still hasn't worn it as an earring yet

The earliest point in time I can find of him with the earring is from the new tl, where he's shown to have already had it by fall of second year

So he must've pierced his ear somewhere between the first day of middle school and fall of second year

My personal hc is he pierced it when he turned 13 as a singular act of teenage rebellion borne from being neglected by his dad

That or it's just yet another questionable fashion choice made by a 13-14 y/o lol

Picking Apart Kou’s Character (Analysis)

Through Nene’s pov he’s introduced as a very sweet guy and stuff but the problem here is that Nene’s is an unreliable narrator since she romantices life + Kou speficially treats her a lot nicer.

He is also heavily morally righteous and tries to hear Hanako out even after knowing he murdered someone, saving him from Teru.

Kou also ends up trying to shoulder other people’s problems, and many of his actions are seen as “heroic” or “selfless” BUT sometimes this due to a more ugly part of his character the fandom seems to discard often.

^ To elaborate, I want to bring up this scene since it’s iconic asf

On the surface it’s like: omg wow so brave of him to kill himself for his bf !! However, in the red house arc (which for context shows him his biggest desires) we can see that he just wants mitsuba to rely on him to the point of extreme measures.

This is rooted from his inferiority complex due to being outshined by his older + younger siblings; AND to add on, Hanako straight up tells Kou twice hes unable to do anything. Then to push it further, Teru’s like ur weak lil bro go back to the kitchen during the no.6 fight. Mitsuba dying infront of him 6 times doesn’t help either..

When Mitsuba asks if Kou is okay and needs to talk about his problems, (I forgot which specific chapter..), Kou automatically assumes that Mitsubas just worried about Kou’s reliability because he has such a low self esteem and is used to given up on.

His inability to actually make stuff happen and ppl telling him he can’t do shit make him very eager to try and shoulder other ppls problem in an attempt to have someone depend on him.

So when Mitsuba comes in with nobody (besides tsukasa but he does more harm than help so wtv) who can help him, Kou.. heh.. ig u could say.. JUMPS at this opportunity.

Anyway, in the Nightlife arc Mitsuba is like “hey can u kill me I’ve given up on being human”, and Kou finally lashes out. Mitsuba is indirectly telling Kou that he gave up on him trying to make his wish come true; AND THEN to make it worse, Mitsuba brings Tsukasa right after up..

Kou gets desperate and forces Mitsuba to stay alive even if he doesn’t want to because both

1) if mitsuba leaves nobody will depend on him and

2) he’s gay for him + misses him after watching him die + can’t bring himself to kill Mitsuba

Yes, he cares a lot for Mitsuba as a person and making his wish come true, but he also just wants to be depended on after being told he’s a let down over and over again.

As I mentioned before, Kou has a trend with diverting his problems from other people and keeping his real feelings in. Nobody expect for nene knows about Mitsubas and Kous relationship, and it literally took Kou like 70 chapters or smthn to give her the basics.

He’s speechless when Akane asks if Mitsuba and him are close because Kou never mentions Mitsuba at all. Teru doesn’t know what’s up with him, and just assumes he “has a goal in mind”. Even when having his big speech defeating Habuko Kou just refers to Mitsuba as “him”.

Okay anyways the point Im trying to get is Kous character is a lot more complex than the fandom passes off !! Yes he can be very sweet and all but there’s other parts to his personality that aren’t so black and white.

Different blog, same Aoi and Kou besties agenda

Aoi and Kou both growing up with heteronormative upbringings and they support each other whilst trying to break from those beliefs, Kou teaching Aoi self defense (yeah it could be Teru but shh) and Aoi giving Kou pointers on a skincare routine.

Also both are horrid at being straightforward with their feelings so they're both each other's wingmen and pats each other in the back whenever they manage to compliment their respective crushes (let's just say Akane and Mitsuba in this case) without imploding

(Also also they both crushed on Nene at some point, the Nene fan club over here lmao)

One of my biggest personal hc is Aoi and Kou are both bi with a ratio of like 1-2 HUGE opposite gender crush with the rest being same gender

Also both are most likely raised with heteronormative beliefs and are low-key annoyed they're not the kind of bi that can easily pass as straight for their families due to their heavy preference for the same gender

They're besties, Aoi gets a male friend who's never had feelings for her (and more emotionally available than Teru (sorry Teru)) and Kou gets a female friend he's never had feelings for and whenever Aoi visits the Minamoto house and Teru and Akane are off somewhere else talking they bond and talk about their crushes like the bi disasters they are DO YOU SEE MY VISION

The contrast between Kaito's dynamics with Shinichi and Hakuba respectively is so important to me you don't understand

Shinichi/Conan doesn't know who KID is under the mask. I doubt he even knows who Kaito Kuroba is outside of him being Toichi Kuroba's son and maybe some childhood interactions. To him, KID is just a criminal, more honor-bound and considerably less deadly compared to the ones he usually catches, but still a criminal at the end of the day. But maybe the thought that Shinichi doesn't know Kaito Kuroba (that even if he drops the KID act, if he starts to act more like his civilian persona around him, he wouldn't know any better), gives him a false sense of security. Maybe it makes him feel more free to be careless around him.

(Deep down, however, he knows he's given out enough that if Shinichi ever does meet Kaito Kuroba, his secret identity would disintegrate almost immediately.

Sometimes he thinks that might not be so bad.)

Hakuba, meanwhile, does know who KID is under the mask. He sees his civilian self almost everyday in class. He's seen him as the prankster magician who annoys the rest of the class with his antics. He knows he's childhood friends with the daughter of the inspector in charge of putting him behind bars. Hakuba knows him as Kaito Kuroba. But he also knows him as KID. Hakuba, while he doesn't have evidence, already knows his secret identity. And that is exactly what makes him a threat. Which is why he can't let his guard down around him. The least he can give himself is plausible deniability and if he slips up in his act, either as KID or as Kaito, that plausible deniability would be gone.

(Deep down, though, he recognizes how Hakuba is still so civil with him despite it all, that, even with his determination to capture him, Hakuba still cares about him as a fellow classmate (as a friend).

And if that makes him slip up sometimes, well, who could say?)

These scenes being a cinematic parallel is so funny to me because the Hanako and Nene scene is like: "Let's be together in the real world!! <3" and then the Mitsuba and Kou scene is "do you want me to KILL MYSELF for you? :D"

To the Minamotos and Kou enjoyers, do you sometimes think about the fact that Kou and Teru took on the roles of “Mother figure” and “Father figure” respectively of the household?

Do you sometimes think if Teru were to die, the family would lose their oldest son, their protector and the “father figure” of the household, but they would still have their actual father, an absent one, but one that still exist?

Do you sometimes think about the fact, that if Kou were to die, they would lose ALL the “motherly figures” that they have left in their household?

Do you sometimes think about the fact that the only “motherly figure” Tiara knows is Kou?

When she is asked who is the one in her house that does all the “motherly stuff”?

The one that cooks.

The one that cleans.

That make sure everyone is doing well, eating well, well rested and takes care of them while they’re sick.

The one that makes sure everyone gets up in the morning and gets ready to go to school. She thinks of Kou.

Do you sometimes think about the fact that Tiara didn’t met her mother?

Do you sometimes think about the fact that when Tiara is asked about who is the one that does all the “mom stuff” around her house, she thinks of Kou?

Do you sometimes think about the fact that probably when Tiara is older, and thinks about her mother, the only one that comes to mind unconsciously is Kou?

Do you sometimes think that maybe, JUST MAYBE, sometimes when Teru thinks or remembers his mom, he unconsciously thinks of Kou too? (Maybe similar to Sokka from Avatar)

Damn it’ll would be crazy to think that isn’t it? 🥲🫠 to think that they would lose their “Mother figure” AGAIN. Crazy, right?
