- practical actions that can be taken to fight internalized misogyny

Why: Are you a girl? A girls’ night out. Going out with the girls. The cool girl speech. Do you like girls? This girl I just met… Why? Why do we call ourselves girls? Why do we refer to other women as girls? We are no longer children. We’re grown-ups, out of our parents’ houses, fending for ourselves, carving up a life and living our dreams and being depressed and sick, but also falling in love and walking in forests and meeting up for coffee. We’re full human beings. So why do we keep calling ourselves children? Who’s really afraid? Men? We’re no girls, we’re full-blooded women. Calling each other girls infantilises us, destroys our credibility, makes us feel like we’re not in control, like we shouldn’t be in control. Being a girl denies us agency, denies us power, makes us feel smaller than we actually are.

How: Start calling yourself what you are, a woman. At first it feels weird, a foreign word in your mouth, but bear with it. This feeling passes, it becomes easier, you settle into it. The women’s team. The women’s bathroom. Two women from downstairs came up the other day. I’m attracted to women. The woman I love. Keep saying it. You’re a woman. You’re a young woman. You’re an old woman. You’re a woman who’s eating chocolate. You’re a woman dancing. You’re a woman taking out the trash. You’re a woman with short hair. You’re a woman emptying your menstrual cup. You’re a woman staring at the night sky. You’re a woman curled up under your blankets. You’re a woman walking on fallen leaves. You’re a woman when it’s rainy; you’re a woman when the sun is out. You’re a woman, not a girl. So are they; they are women. 

if you’re butch in public you’re showing kids what kind of woman they can be. you’re a marvel and an open door. you are something they might have thought was impossible. you are the proof little butch girls need that they can exist grown up and happy and handsome without changing a single thing

NGC 2899

Astronomers at ESO’s VLT observatory have taken this stunning image of the planetary nebular NGC 2899. 

The nebula is the result of a star that collapsed and formed a White Dwarf, expelling the gas outwards, and now is illuminated by the remnants of that star, irradiating the gas and causing it to glow. 

Our sun will one day be a planetary nebula and a white dwarf.

a lot of detrans women seem to very quickly be bombarded with questions about what they're going to do to look more feminine again...seems kinda fucked up.

like a community of women isolated and alienated as a result of gender roles (among other issues but that's the key one here) and we're just gonna chuck a couple more gendered expectations at them?

people asking if detrans women will get reconstructive surgery or laser hair removal, offering them make-up tips or talking about reclaiming femininity...it really seems like the opposite of the unconditional acceptance detrans women need.

(i'm talking about this from the perspective that pushing femininity onto ANY woman is inherently harmful, rather than a detrans position. but another harm caused by this is of course that detrans narratives are being pushed into another box. no two detrans women have the same experiences, positive and/or negative, with transition; or relationships with their bodies. women can absolutely love their post-transition bodies, or have mixed feelings or feelings completely unrelated to transition or just feel completely neutral about their appearance. but whatever the needs and motivations of individual women, femininity is harmful to its core and shouldn't be encouraged as a "counter" to transition in any way.)

bottom line is, (de)trans women don't become more or less female at any step along their (de)transition. they are and were women all along because womanhood is not an identity, it's just female reality.
