Suzuki's off-road career started in 1968, when they bought the Hope Motor Company, and with it, the rights to the vehicle line known as HopeStar ON360. Suzuki continued by throwing out Hope's Mitsubishi engine, replacing it with an air-cooled 359 cc two-stroke. The Light Jeep 10 (LJ10) was followed by the liquid-cooled LJ20 in 1972, and three years later, it was time for the the export-focused LJ50, which had a 539 cc inline-three. Still a two-stroke.

Stanguellini’s first contact with the world of record-breaking dated back to 1959 when he took on the task of a general transformation of the Nibbio IV, a voiturette originally constructed in 1956 along the lines of the car promoted by Giovanni Lurani in the 1930s. It was built around a Formula 3 Volpini chassis, powered by a 350 cc single-cylinder Moto Guzzi engine and was bodied by Ghia. These photos show the car at Monza where it broke five medium and long distance records in the hands of Angelo Poggio and Pietro Campanella. Commendatore Stanguellini’s face shows his great satisfaction at the outcome. This experience was to lead to the creation of the Colibri’.
