The life of a mixed media artist is always intense.
My part of a Secret Satan gift exchange. Finished suuuuper late because SOMEONE decided to sit their fat, furry cat butthole on my painting while the paint was wet.

In case it hasn’t been evident, I’ll take this moment to make it clear: I am not here for white supremacists/nationalists, racists, misogynists, homophobes, antisemites, antiziganists, xenophobes, TERFs, SWERFs, or any manifestation of fascism or social darwinism.

So I wanted to do some comix on my thoughts/experiences since I've been on testosterone for over a year now and pretty consistently get "read" as a cisgender guy.
But I was like "Ugh, do I really want to do ANOTHER autobio comic? I'm bored of drawing myself."
And then I remembered that I'm an artist and I can actually CREATE CHARACTERS AND MAKE THEM SAY STUFF. So here are some doodles of the various trans dudes that will be in the comic. It'll be like that Bob Dylan movie where a bunch of different people play Bob Dylan.
...except a comic book.
...and I'm not famous.
...and none of these people look like me.

Some little OOTD-doodles
My dad once said I dress like a “Norwegian fisherman who’s let himself go” and I’m okay with that.

My ongoing wall collage, pages from "Emergence," and a weaving I did. I'm interested in doing more fabric art in the future...
I'm calling this one done, aside from getting some varnish for it. I really need to get better light bulbs. Natural light makes such a difference.

I didn’t feel comfortable talking about the awesome time I had at @shortrunseattle without mentioning what happened after...
That said, I had a great time and met a lot of really amazing people and if I haven’t responded to you yet, it’s because I’m having a bit of a rough time being a functioning human in light of the election. I promise I will get back to you.
Doodled in my sketchbook with pen and markers

grad school has helped me level up my procrastination skills
while avoiding reading and homework, I taught myself how to use Sculptris and created a bust of a character for a huge sprawling comic that may never actually happen!
I’m pretty pleased, what with this being my first sculpt and all.
It’s here!
“Emet,” my 12 page, full color comic will debut at @shortrunseattle on November 5th!
It’ll be available on my etsy store after Short Run.
(and before anyone goes “Women don’t wear tefillin!”, the gendered usage of tefillin varies based on the form of Judaism. The majority of Orthodox Jews feel that women should not/do not need to don tefillin, most Conservative Jews hold this view as well, although there is a growing movement of Conservative Jewish women who don tefillin. Opinions among Reform Jews vary from “Women don’t need to/should not don tefillin,” to “If that’s how you practice your faith, that’s great!” to “Why are you asking me? I don’t care.”)

mrrrl said: whoa! the first panel looks almost embossed
Thanks! I’m trying to imitate the look of risograph prints (like the ones I got done for my illustration zine) so I've done the line work in ink and then I'm doing pencil shading on separate sheets of tracing paper. My plan is to scan the pages, color in the clothes/characters/objects with one color, overlay the pencil shading in a second color, and then lay the line work over that in a third color!
I mean... I could have done the whole thing straight digital... but I like to make my life more difficult.
Sneak peek at a new technique I'm using for a comic that will debut at the @shortrunseattle
This scribbly ghostly mess will ultimately be a full-color twelve page comic book.
Trying to finish work for that while also moving!

am about to read preacher: is there any heads up yall want to give me before i dive in? i tried searching online and didnt see any post related to my Q so hope am not being annoying
If you sent me a question about Preacher, I haven’t received it. Maybe tumblr ate the message? So, not knowing what your question is specifically, general content warnings for Preacher that I would give are lots and lots of explicit violence, drug and alcohol abuse, rape, domestic violence, child abuse, referenced/off-screen bestiality and pedophilia, use of racial slurs, religiously motivated child abuse, basically all characters that experience same-gender attraction are in some way evil, and there is a huge lack of people of color in any capacity. Oh, and lots of blasphemy, if that’s a problem for you.
You mentioned in your commentary that you read some articles comparing the Simpsons and Family Guy. Would you mind recommending your favorites?
Sorry it’s taken me so long to respond! Here are some links to some criticism that I feel is well-written and relevant.

i'm def not here to defend any of the absolute garbage content in preacher but speaking as someone who is a gay dude, and who has spoken about this with other gay dudes, the entire work absolutely reeked of cassidy having an incredibly intense thing for jesse. what i can't figure out is how intentional this was. it feels absolutely blatant to me and some others i've talked to, but since you didn't mention it yourself i'm wondering what your take was regarding this in particular. thank you!!
Oh, I totally agree! Jesse and Cassidy spend so much time bonding and hanging out and confessing “I’ve told you things I’ve never told anyone else…” and there’s so much emotional connection and tension between them… and then the arc with Tulip and Cassidy happens.
Out of fucking nowhere!
Was there ever any hint that Cassidy felt so strongly about Tulip? Did my anger about the comic’s homophobia cloud my vision with such a thick red haze that I MISSED A MAJOR PLOT/CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT? Like, even though it would have turned Cassidy into another queer villain, that whole arc would have made more sense if it involved Cassidy and Jesse, rather than Cassidy and Tulip.
Aaah! My first risograph printed collection of portraits!

Queer Code -- hard copy $5!
So... this was originally gonna be a few pages explaining “queer coding” but the further I got in it, the more I had to say, so I chopped up the first few panels I made, rearranged them and added like 6 more pages.
When I heard they were making a tv version of “Preacher,” I decided to give the comics a read. I’d read some of Garth Ennis’ other stuff back in high school and I always heard him put up there with Neil Gaiman and Alan Moore.
By the end of the first arc in “Preacher,” I basically had to will-power my way through the rest of the comic because I wanted to know how it ended. Despite having read the whole damn thing only a few months ago, I can barely remember any of it, except for how utterly aggravated the whole thing made me. The most POSITIVE depiction of a queer character in the whole series is of a self-loathing gay cop who can only have sex with other men when they’re beating and humiliating him. THAT’S THE MOST POSITIVE DEPICTION OF A QUEER CHARACTER.
And then I recently read some contemporary manga
“Soil” -- One canon queer character. A gay man who is a serial child molester.
“One Punch-Man” -- One canon queer character. A gay man who is basically a walking prison rape joke.
“I Am a Hero” -- One canon queer character. A transgender man who is repeatedly misgendered and insulted and ultimately dies. But he’s not a rapist or a murderer, so yay representation?
I’ll admit, this comic is coming from a place of anger and disappointment. That the Big Names in Serious Graphic Novels (some of which I really enjoy and really influenced me) still have so much homophobic/transphobic content. That a lot of contemporary comics haven’t progressed much further. I don’t expect every queer character to be a hero, but when you have a mere handful of queer characters and the majority of them die or are villains, it’s a problem. I’d rather see a body horror metaphor for queerness than see another shitty canon queer trope.
Shout out to my fellow queer comic book makers. Even if you’re just xeroxing comics in the campus computer lab and giving them to friends, you are doing good work.
And if Garth Ennis wants to argue that “Preacher” isn’t homophobic, I am ready to throw down in the alley behind my apartment. And by “throw down,” I mean “debate.”

I’m working on drawings for several zines that I hope to get riosgraph printed. I thought a neat way to get some interest for these future projects would be to show my work.
Watch me draw and listen to me ramble!
The face I’m drawing comes from a photo in “Artist’s Models 8: Practical Poses for the Working Artist.”
...aaaand here’s what I’m aiming for the final pieces to look like.
Also, I should have more copies of my “R. J. Hill: Therapist” comic for sale later in the week.
