One day you think: I want to die. And then you think, very quietly, actually I want a coffee. I want a nap. A sandwich. A book. And I want to die turns day by day into I want to go home, I want to walk in the woods, I want to see my friends, I want to sit in the sun. I want a cleaner room, I want a better job, I want to live somewhere else, I want to live.

The relationship between Sang-Woo and Ali was for me a better story about class inequality than the whole Hunger Games Capitol style VIPs. Both are desperate for money, but Sang-Woo is white-collar poor, whereas Ali is ‘can’t afford noodles, will walk between cities’ immigrant worker poor. Then there’s the fact that Ali keeps calling Sang-Woo ‘sir’. Sang-Woo even berates him for being deferential when they’re both in the same position. But when the chips are down, Sang-Woo plays on Ali’s trust in him as the university-educated-office-guy-with-a-plan. He abuses the trust that Ali automatically places in a guy of his ‘class’ and education (despite the fact he’s an embezzler, oh Ali!) and as someone he thought had become his friend and ally. And Ali’s face when he realises is heartbreaking. Fucking not over this yet, as you can tell!!
