one of the funniest things about percy exploring the mythic world is that unlike other children’s fantasy stories, there is absolutely no starry-eyed wonder, instead percy’s just going “ah fuck” at the tenth vaguely greek looking structure or yet another unexplainable magical occurrence. more than excitement at discovering this new world, he is just so tired of all the bullshit surrounding him 24/7 and i think it’s just so valid.
after watching several povs, there's something so striking about the way mumbo died.
he dies at home, first of all, which is notable in its own right because so much of his time was spent running about, usually in pursuit of kills. he dies with grian, too— to a thing grian created, no less, but it isn't actually grian's fault for once.
mumbo dies in that tall tower and when lightning strikes, from all across the server, everyone looks. their eyes land on that tower, and everyone is watching. even in grian's perspective, you can see everyone at renwood mound, lined up and staring. those at the bamlands looked on too.
they didn't see mumbo die, but they saw grian's grief. grian, who, throughout this season, has seemed cruel and untouchable to those outside of his circle due to his involvement with and knowledge of the wild cards. they watch grian immediately crumble under the weight of mumbo's death; several of them even explicitly comment, "look at grian, he's grieving, he's in mourning."
i like to think that, until that moment, grian was almost god-like in their minds; now, though, he's the quintessential concept of humanity. grief can be religious if you do it right, after all. even beyond the grian aspect though, isn't this just the most despairing omen of what's to come?
i mean, there's something about this image of a man fallen from grace, crying out as he holds the mangled corpse of his friend in the home they made together, high in the sky, on display for all the world to bear witness to. and the world did bear witness, be it with pity, horror, joy... it doesn't matter, because they saw.
the canary curse has been broken, but this was a fittingly foreboding, tone-setting image that did a stunning job filling its shoes
Really loving the imagery of Grian doing everything in his power to get Mumbo and Skizz back but it not going right and them coming back wrong, them insulting him, Mumbo betraying and killing him. Like they're out of his jurisdiction now, like his power was never that important to begin with. Like the Watchers are taunting him.
grian didn't have a power.
he could mimic other peoples powers, yes, but he didn't have his own power. he didn't have a power made for him. he only had the ability to copy powers made for other people.
grian didn't have his own power because was never meant to be there.
he was never meant to be a player.
he was only meant to watch.
DID YOU GUYS HEAR THE GROWL IN GRIAN'S VOICE WHEN HE CALLED MUMBO AND SKIZZ A TRAITOR AND KILL THEM AGAIN???? AND THE MANIACAL LAUGH???? AND THE VIOLENT WAY HE SAID HE'LL SLAUGHTER EVERYONE?????
33:10 in Grian's video btw
i can't get over this guy actually. shakes him.
just lineart below the cut because I'm very proud of it
anyway I love breezetho and superpowers and the newest wildlife episode one shot killed me goodnight
There were so many powerful villain Grian sound bites in this episode. I can only pray the animators make use of them. My man was crashing out, it was terrifying but hilarious.
Oli's inclusions in Wild Life are so fun because it means that you can headcanon him as a Watcher but only if he's silly. All-powerful god-like figure but he only sends down snails and robots and superpowers plus cool music playing alongside them
not that alone!
What's wrong? You look like you've seen a ghost!
i know grian said he didn't know who got what powers (other than his own), but either he was lying about that or whoever did assign them knew exactly what they were doing because they feel like they've been made FOR them.
some of them are really obvious, like bdubs controlling time (both through speed and by sleeping), cleo getting to raise the dead (and grian getting to see skizz and mumbo again as a result), pearl getting to fly (arent her goggles and wings so moth-like? they are to me) and lizzie being a literal Shadow Lady. joel, bigb and scar all got powers that connect to their characters this season, like joel's affinity to parkour and bigb's whole creaking deal and scar really wanting to punch people far (and he's making a rollercoaster. what do you do with rollercoasters? you ride them...). etho "did that make you jump" slab gets to (literally) jumpscare everyone on the server and of course theatre kid rendog gets to pretend to be other people (he's also one of the few people who subbed in for another player during a prior season).
martyn's fits his lore as listener so well, grian's got the most watcher-like abilities of them all, and gem getting being able to see traps and communicate with the dead (one of whom is only there because he tried too hard to kill her) is brilliant with how she plays the game like she's got more control than anyone else (hello watcher/listener...?). finding connections with scott and impulse's powers might be more of a reach but to me they fit well because scott generally comes across as harmless and peaceful but he's also almost literally become a sacrificial lamb, and impulse switching places with other people makes me think of third life and his double crossing playing both sides schemes.
tango's might be my favourite because the frostwalker ability is so decked out deepfrost citadel to me, and he also gets to flee with extra flee (my personal favourite catchphrase of his). also (not to overanalyse) jimmy's power fits so well into his overall narrative as a canary who's broken his curse: he's never made it to a final episode, he's been grian's guardian angel (always watching, never seen) and with the canary gone from the mines there's nothing to warn the others so they're dead before they realise they're in danger.
// Wild life spoilers // Blow the candles!

What if Will could see death auras as part of his healing abilities as a son of Apollo? What if the first time he met Nico he saw his aura as a child of Hades and thought he was like actively dying? Will, of course freaked out, trying to make Nico sit down, to tell him what happened, "how are you even standing up right now?!" and Nico's just standing there all confused because for once Nico's not actually injured and he doesn't really understand why this pretty boy is panicking over him.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THAT BITCH WHO BLEW UP THE ST. LOUIS ARC!!!
Percy: Nico is at that very special age where a kid only has one thing on their mind.
Jason: Boys?
Nico: Homicide.
Bring him back
