Every time I have ever found God it has been from a group of outsiders.

Every picture of God that has ever looks like him has been made by people who never saw a Jesus that looked like themselves

I have never felt more at home than when listening to a gay person talk about God. I have never understood someone better than the lesbian Catholics who love to veil, or the transgender episcoples who see their transition as an opportunity to share in God's creation, or anyone who found God and then carved their own way to him.

When I sit in chapel, and the worship music feels like noise, I know there is a hymn being sung with a shaking voice that sounds just like Christ calling out for his father. When I see lessons written in script, I know there are sheets of construction paper printed in stock fonts on a family's kitchen table sent home from Sunday school teaching the same. When I get a hand out with Bible verses bought from Amazon, I know that someone has written the same verse in craft glue and collage and their blood.

I think God is present the most when the process of finding him is distinctly human; because I think he knows us, and makes the way he finds us human.

Judas gave into despair judas gave into despair judas gave into despair. Peter denied and repented. The prodigal came home. The prostitute fell at His feet. The publican was justified. At the 11th hour the thief confessed His kingship. Fall get up fall get up. It’s ok it’s ok. It can be ok.

At the Last Judgment I shall not asked whether I was successful in my ascetic exercises, nor how many bows and prostrations I made. Instead I shall be asked did I feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the sick and the prisoners. That is all I shall be asked.

Living traditions constantly interpret their canonical texts. That is what makes fundamentalism — text without interpretation — an act of violence against tradition. In fact, fundamentalists and today’s atheists share the same approach to texts. They read them directly and literally, ignoring the single most important fact about a sacred text, namely that its meaning is not self-evident. It has a history and an authority of its own. Every religion must guard against a literal reading of its hard texts if it is not to betray God’s deeper purposes.

God loves your body. Your intersex body, your transsexual body, your nonbinary body, your transgender body, your genderqueer body, your androgynous body. Whatever body you have, God loves it dearly.

there's always a lot of talk about how being gay or trans is a "sin." and a lot of people have reclaimed this, have joked about their "sin," have held it up yourself so it can't be held against you.

but to all of the religious queers, the ones trying to find or create a home in themselves where their identity and their religion don't contradict... i see you. i've been you, i am you, i love you.

your orientation is not a sin.

your gender is not a sin.

you are not sinful or wrong or bad just for being who you are.

your identity does not contradict your religion.

you are beautifully and wonderfully made, just as you are.

you are loved by your creator, just as you are.

nobody can take any of that away from you.

[ please do not tag or censor my use of the word queer. do not derail this post by talking about how much religion sucks. ]

The worst part of Christian fragility is when individual Christians try to defend their faith from accusations of anti-Semitism by throwing another denomination under the bus, like … people, please, you’ve all been hideous over the centuries.

And, no, I’m not saying that there’s no difference between a member of the Westboro Baptist Church and a Quaker but like …

1.) There was no pure, non-anti-Semitic version of Christianity that existed before “the bad Christians” ruined it. There are anti-Semitic verses in the New Testament (and YES they are actually anti-Semitic I don’t care about whatever convoluted explanation your pastor told you to justify them). Christians have enacted violence on Jews in multiple sects from multiple countries throughout history. Christians still engage in cultural appropriation and see us as targets for conversion. Any work against anti-Semitism a church does is an active dismantling of that violent history. It’s not a default factory setting your faith had before the heretics ruined it.

2.) Whenever you’re like “No, that’s not us, that’s the Catholics/Protestants/Evangelicals!” – you’re not saying this because you care about Jews. You’re saying this because you want to get another shot in the ongoing beef with Denomination X and you’re using us to do it and trust us, we resent it and do. not. care. And half the time you’re wrong about your sect being innocent, anyway. (Looking at you, Lutherans who have never read Martin Luther’s writings on Jewish people.)

I’m not saying this because I hate all Christians – a huge chunk of my family is Catholic, including my husband – or I want to make my Christian friends feel bad, but this drives me nuts whenever I see it and I know it’s never going to end because so many Christians are going to be eternally stuck in this mode.

u kno. lgbt ppl who, despite abuse from religious family members or the church themselves, feel a strong connection to their faith and choose to be active within it are legitimately and genuinely incredibly brave

Recently I realized how easy it was to worship God. Prayer isn't always a woman in her knees, arms lifted into the sky and crying out her love. It can be that, yes, but it doesn't have to be that. Going hiking. A parent kissing their child. Staring at the ocean. A hug from a friend. Watching lighting strike during a thunderstorm. Baking bread. God makes miracles, yes, but you can also find Them just as often in the mundane.

“They say Jesus was a friend of sinners, but he didn’t describe himself that way. His motto wasn’t “eating and drinking with prostitutes and tax collectors.” Those were the labels used by the religious community, by the disapproving onlookers. What’s amazing about Jesus is that when he hung out with sinners, he didn’t act like they were sinners. They weren’t a “project,” a “mission field.” They were his friends. People with names. Defined as beloved children of the Creator, not defined by their sins. Icons of God’s image. His brothers and sisters.”

— Micah J Murray,  Why I Can’t Say ‘Love the Sinner/Hate the Sin’ Anymore
