ALTERNATE VERSION ππ
In a way this could be a massive π to my months long art block (before it yknow hits me in the ass againl
i've been listening to "it's raining somewhere else" for the past two hours
funny how music works sometimes. at first, it was just another track in the game's soundtrack. pleasant. melancholic. the kind of thing you might hear in an elevator, if elevators played jazz that made you feel things you couldn't quite name.
but then you sit with it. you reaaally sit with it. and you start to realize it's telling you something.
the underground is a strange place when you think about it. what they have isn't really weatherβ it's more like... echoes of it. mechanical approximations. magical imitations. whatever you want to call it, it's not quite real. at least, to me, itβs not.Β
waterfall's got its eternal drips, probably just groundwater finding paths through stone the way it always has, i dunno. and snowdin... somehow frozen in a permanent winter that can't possibly be natural. magic, maybe. or something else entirely.Β
either way, it's all just a stand-in. a photograph of weather, caught in time and played on repeat. unchanging. nature turned into routine.Β
and maybe that's the whole point.
yes, the undergroundβs a prison. no point pretending it isn't. but you know what else it is? it's tomorrow, and the day after, and the day after that.
you wake up, and papyrus is out there somewhere, recalibrating his puzzles. the regulars at grillby's have worn their own shapes into their seats. even those echo flowers keep whispering the same conversations, like they're stuck in a loop they're too comfortable to break. itβs consistent. reliable.
the song plays at mtt resort, right when sans brings up the surface.
and then you get it. why it's called that.
because up there.. it's raining. really raining. maybe not right here, maybe not right now, but somewhere. it's always raining somewhere. and rain... rain means things change. rain means the open sky decides to rewrite your plans. rain means sometimes everything you built just... washes away. no warning. no apology. just change.
down here though? down here you've got what you need. friends who know your worst jokes. food that never surprises you. a small purpose, perhaps, but heyβ it's yours. a place where you belong, even if it's not exactly where you'd choose to be. it's limited, but at least you know the limits.
and i think that's what the song is trying to tell us. every soft note, every gentle melodyβ it's sans sitting there at that restaurant table, trying to warn you in the only way he knows how.
is it worth it? is it worth leaving the underground if itβs only to be greeted by nothing but rain? sometimes the cage you know is kinder than the freedom you don't.
it never truly rains in the underground. never has, never will. but somewhere else? somewhere above all this weight monsters call home?
it rains. it pours and it pours. and once you step into that rain, you can never really come back to being dry.
i think the concept of a software install wizard is so cuteβ¦ developers know the average person isnt comfortable running terminal commands so theyre like here!!! this wizard will do it for you <3 and weβre all like yay :) the wizard
