Ooo now I can briefly introduce something! So, the Earth isn’t expanding and infinitely large. Flatness, for the universe, means that parallel lines remain parallel, the angles of a triangle add up to 180, etc etc.

Cosmologists also came up with cosmic inflation, to explain that any curvature was smoothed out through exponential growth. For the universe to be as flat as it is now, it would have to have been even FLATTER in the past! Think about a spinning top… if there is an imperfection in the setup, it will fall over. Since we don’t observe deviations in the flatness of the universe, it follows that like the top must have been incredibly perfectly set up, the extremely early universe must have been incredibly flat!

Note that a period of inflation helps solve some other problems, but that’s beyond the scope of this post (see the “relic problem,” “horizon problem,” and “structure problem”).
