North American Cougar Puma concolor couguar Family: Felidae Genus: Puma Conservation Status: Least Concern This feline stands out as one of the world's most versatile adaptors, thriving across diverse habitats in the Americas. Originally, multiple subspecies were designated due to this adaptability, but now only two remain valid: the North American and the larger South American variant.

Its fur displays variations based on habitat, becoming denser in colder regions and lighter in deserts or warmer zones. While not classified among the big cat species, it shares the closest kinship with the cheetah.

Long-finned Pilot Whale Globicephala melas melas Family: Delphinidae Genus: Globicephala Conservation Status: Least Concern This whale is not a whale but a large dolphin. Despite the minimal differences between the Short-finned Pilot Whale and this species, they are indeed two distinct species. If that is not perplexing enough, this dolphin also possesses one subspecies—actually two, although one became extinct long ago along the coasts of Japan. In fact, scientists aren't sure that was a subspecies but almost sure. Let's say %93,2 sure. You see, science is consistently regarded as an exact discipline. Consider joining the club here. More animals to come soon. South Central Balck Rhinoceros Among the contemporary rhino species, the Black Rhino is considered to be the best adapted to the new world. It stands out as one of the oldest, most stable, and most widely distributed among the modern rhinoceros species. Unfortunately, human actions have significantly threatened their previous success and led to a decline in their populations.

African Forest Elephant Loxodonta cyclotis Family: Elephantidae Genus: Loxodonta Subspecies: 00 Feed: Herbivorous Habitat: Monsoon Forest Status and Conservation: Endangered This unique elephant species is the smallest of the three (2.4 meters), it boasts a disproportionately impressive tusk. Adapted for forest life, it has a compact frame, less curved tusks for easy navigation, and probably the most captivating feature is its distinct yellow eyes common in many of these animals.

As you might already know, I am working on illustrating all the world's mammals, including subspecies. I've created over 200 realistic illustrations and counting. I've been exploring ways to promote my work, and as you're aware, I've established a club for this purpose. Among the options, I conceived the idea of an EAlbum to collect digital stickers featuring animal illustrations.

I want to be honest with you—while the EAlbum isn't exactly as I envisioned, it reflects the extent of my programming knowledge. In the future, I hope to implement the complete dynamics of a sticker album, allowing people to swap, buy, and sell stickers. For now, subscribing club members will receive four stickers each month to add to the album.

The album provides key animal information such as family, genus, and conservation status. The inaugural album focuses on the Perissodactyla order (Rhinos, Tapirs, and Horses), but as the project progresses, more albums featuring various animal families will follow. For the past two years, I've been illustrating every mammal on our planet. I've completed over 200 animals and now plan to create a book. In the book, I researched interesting facts about each animal, (Where they live, conservation status, evolutive paths, curiosities, etc). Pilot whales were originally associated with the theory that a leader of the pod was piloting them. There is also Pothead Whale, but the Melon-Headed Whale deserves better. The last male, named Sudan, passed away in 2018 due to age-related complications. With Sudan's death, this species is functionally extinct and now relies on various assisted reproductive techniques facilitated by humans.

Amur leopard This leopard inhabits cold environments, which necessitates denser and thicker fur, making it, in my opinion, the most beautiful of all eight subspecies of leopards. It is classified as critically endangered, and its population is estimated to be just over 100 individuals. Feed: Herbivorous Habitat: Subtropical Dry Forest Status and Conservation: Endangered The largest elephant species, it stands as the tallest terrestrial animal on Earth, reaching heights of up to 3.96 meters. Highly social and exceptionally intelligent, elephants exhibit remarkable traits.

Given their impressive size and strong social bonds, elephants are effectively free from predators. Although young elephants may occasionally fall prey to lions or hyenas, their overall vulnerability is minimal.

Regrettably, the sole threat to their existence is us, humans. Throughout history, we have hunted elephants for sustenance and weaponry. Przewalski's Horse Equus ferus przewalskii Family: Equidae Genus: Equus Subspecies: 03 Feed: Herbivorous Habitat: Temperate Steppe Status and Conservation: Critically Endangered This is the only remaining species of wild horse. The other two wild horse species have already become extinct. One of them is the Tarpan (which was mentioned in a previous post), and the other is the European Wild Horse, which went extinct during the Pleistocene era. The other horses that roam in the wild are considered feral, which means they were once domesticated horses that have reverted to a wild state.

The Przewalski Horse was also extinct in the wild at one point. However, thanks to various breeding programs and the efforts of different zoos, it has been successfully reintroduced to its natural habitat in Mongolia and China. Pygmy Killer Whale This one is interesting. It is not related to the Killer Whale and is not a whale but a dolphin. The only thing that is accurate about its name is that it is not very large. Perhaps it should be called just the "Pygmy". However, it is very similar to another dolphin called the Melon-headed whale (we will learn about that one soon).

Not much is known about this 'whale' (I'm not sure if I should call it a whale). It is not typically aggressive in the wild, although there have been reports of aggressive behavior in captivity. Maybe is trying to tell us something.

Love this one! More from the Felidae family. The turn now is for the biggest in America. Jaguar At first glance, Jaguars and Leopards are not so easy to differentiate. They are like two brothers. One's appearance, the leopard, looks more graceful and stylized. While the Jaguar has a more bulky body and its legs are shorter. One is agile while the other one is made to wrestle. However, the biggest difference is that the leopard lives in Africa, Asia, and Oceania, while the Jaguar is found in America. The last member of the Giraffe family and to my eyes the most beautiful! I must say that when I saw it at the zoo the first time, it didn't strike me as much as now when I draw it. Is clearly the head of a giraffe in the body of a prehistoric animal adorned with the stripes of a zebra running down its legs. If you think of it, is like coming from a fantasy book. Okapi It is a living fossil and contrary to its closest relative, the giraffe, which is mostly found in the savannas, the okapis live in the dense forests of the Congo. It is very elusive and timid making it a really hard specimen to study in the wild. Therefore little is known about it. Working on this one was challenging because there is only one picture from 1884 taken of this animal before its extinction. However, when I have to put inventive ways to create an animal as realistic as possible is when I enjoy the illustration more. 

Tarpan

Scientists have long grappled with the origins of the domestic horse, seeking to establish its ancestral roots. Initially, there were two distinct horse populations: the Prewalsky horse in Europe and the Tarpan in Asia. Regrettably, the Tarpan became extinct at the dawn of the 20th century, leaving no DNA samples behind. This absence of genetic evidence has posed a significant challenge in determining the true origins of the domestic horse. Nevertheless, studies analyzing the DNA of the Prewalski horse have provided compelling evidence of a close relationship between these horses and their domestic counterparts.

Numerous endeavors have been undertaken to revive the Tarpan breed. While the Heck Horse bears the closest resemblance in terms of appearance, their genetic makeup tells a different tale. Introducing an updated illustrated poster featuring all the tigers of the world! While it was once believed that there were nine subspecies of tigers, recent scientific research has shown that there are actually only two: those that live on the continent and those that reside on islands. However, within these two subspecies, there are various populations of tigers that were previously classified as distinct subspecies. Creating this poster was a labor of love that required a significant amount of time and effort. Some of the animals featured on the poster were particularly challenging to illustrate due to their extinction, which meant there was limited photographic evidence available to use as a reference. I am thrilled with the final product and hope that others will appreciate the attention to detail and care that went into each illustration. "Today, the last tiger subspecies and probably my favorite one: the Sumatran Tiger. While working on this animal, I discovered that it has several notable visual differences from other subspecies of tigers. One of the most striking is the length and density of its mane, which gives it an even more majestic appearance. Additionally, the tiger's stripes are thicker, creating a more vivid contrast in its coat.

I'm excited to share with you that I'll be releasing a poster featuring all the subspecies of tigers, including the Sumatran Tiger, very soon. Stay tuned for more updates!" Sumatran Tiger The Sumatran tiger is the smallest of all tiger subspecies and is currently listed as critically endangered with only about 400 individuals left in the wild. Unfortunately, the Javan and Bali tiger is now extinct. They were populations that belonged to this subspecies of tiger. Formerly considered a subspecies of the Common Dolphin, the short-beaked common dolphin has since been recognized as a distinct species with no subspecies identified thus far. Although they can be difficult to differentiate from their long-beaked counterparts, the short-beaked common dolphin can be identified by its notably smaller beak.

This species is widely distributed throughout all the world's oceans, with a global population estimated to be around two million individuals. Despite their abundance, they face numerous threats such as entanglement in fishing gear, pollution, and habitat loss. The South African Giraffe is the last member of the giraffe family I've been studying, and it's been quite an adventure. While I still struggle to identify some of the subspecies, I feel confident in recognizing most of them.

South African Giraffe

The South African Giraffe, also known as the Cape Giraffe, is a fascinating subspecies with a population of approximately 37,000 individuals. Interestingly, it was once extinct in some of its native areas in Southern Africa, but thanks to reintroduction efforts, its population has seen an impressive 150% increase. This is certainly good news for this subspecies, which is now a common resident in zoos, private farms, and ranches around the world.

With its distinctive coat pattern of cream-colored patches with orange-brown edges, the South African Giraffe is a unique and beautiful animal. While habitat loss, poaching, and trophy hunting continue to threaten their populations, conservation efforts are helping to protect these magnificent creatures for future generations to enjoy.

Today we are going to start with a family that is loved by many. Is not my cup of tea but I have learned about them and they are indeed fascinating. The equines. Domestic Horse

The domestication of horses is believed to occurred around 4000 to 3500 BCE, possibly in what is today Kazakhstan. However, there is some debate among experts about the exact time and location of horse domestication, as evidence of early horse domestication is limited and sometimes difficult to interpret. It is generally agreed, however, that horses were first domesticated for their meat, milk, and hides, and that they were later used for transportation, agriculture, and warfare.

There are numerous breeds of domestic horses, which are classified into three categories: Hot Blood, Cold Blood, and Warm Blood. These majestic creatures have played a crucial role in human evolution. The horse was one of the first animals to be domesticated, and their partnership with humans has allowed us to travel greater distances, carry heavy loads, cultivate crops with greater efficiency, and conquer the world. In short, without the taming of horses, we would not have been able to achieve the level of progress and development that we have today. It is also a very recurrent animal in art as we have seen it in many paintings and sculptures throughout history. It is commonly connected with strength, power, speed, and freedom. I finished the tapir's family. I had contemplated including the Kabomani Tapir, supposedly a new species discovered a few years ago. However, after conducting extensive research, I found insufficient credible evidence to support its classification as a distinct species. Nevertheless, I did uncover information confirming the existence of four subspecies of Lowland Tapir. Some studies suggest that a black tapir photographed in Malaysia may represent a new species of tapir, yet most scientists contend that it is simply a melanistic variation of the Malayan Tapir. As these examples illustrate, animal classification is not always clear-cut. Therefore, I will continue to study this fascinating animal family and keep abreast of any new developments.

Southern White Rhinoceros

The name of the White Rhinoceros is attributed to a translation error. In Dutch, "white" is pronounced as "widj," which actually means "wide," referring to the rhino's mouth width. A more precise, albeit unused, name for this species is the square-lipped rhinoceros. The White Rhinoceros is a genus comprising two subspecies. This is one of them. Wallpaper is available here.

I made a mistake in my last post. I confused the Long-Beaked Common Dolphin species with its subspecies the Arabian Common Dolphin. They are so alike that I am actually surprised I was able to notice the difference. The Long Baked Common Dolphin's beak is notably shorter and its body is a little bit slimmer that the subspecies. Colorwise is not a good way to tell because the variations are plenty and both, species and subspecies can present these variations. As far as I know, the Arabian Common Dolphin can be elevated to a species. More studies need to be conducted but that is the indicator.

Long-Beaked Common Dolphin

The Long-Beaked Common Dolphin was once thought to be the same species as the Short-Beaked Dolphin, but recent research has confirmed that they are, in fact, distinct species. Unlike their short-beaked cousins, this species tends to stay closer to the coast.

While not as abundant as the Short-Beaked Dolphin (which is the most common dolphin species), the Long-Beaked Common Dolphin is not currently classified as threatened or endangered. Some scientists have suggested the existence of subspecies within this species, but only the Arabian Common Dolphin has been officially recognized.

I'm proud of this artwork. Despite the low quality of my reference picture, I was able to interpret shapes and details. The rarity of photographs of this majestic animal declared extinct in the mid-90s, I think makes this illustration all the more significant in preserving its memory. Javan Tiger This tiger was considered a plague. I think that says all. The characterization of the Javan Tiger as a plague is a sobering reminder of the destructive consequences of human activity on wildlife.
