Спутник 1, 2 & Объект Д (3) by @robinwaaaaa
History changed on October 4, 1957, when the Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik 1, the world's first artificial satellite. It was around the size of a beach ball, weighed 83.6 kg (183.9 pounds), and took about 98 minutes to orbit Earth on its elliptical path. This ushered in a new age of political, military, technological, and scientific developments, and although the Sputnik launch was a single event, it marked the start of the space age and the U.S.-U.S.S.R space race.
Ever wanted to look back in time? This week, we’re launching a kind of time machine – a telescope so powerful it will help us see back some of the first stars and galaxies made after the Big Bang.
The James Webb Space Telescope is the largest and most advanced telescope we’ve ever put in space. With revolutionary technology, it will study 13.5 billion years of cosmic history and help humanity understand our place in the stars.
Tomorrow, Dec. 25, at 7:20 a.m. ET (12:20 UTC), the Webb Telescope is set to launch from French Guiana, beginning a 29-day journey to a spot a million miles away.

Once Webb launches, the journey has only just begun. The telescope will begin a 2-week-long process of unfolding itself in space before settling in to explore the universe in ways we’ve never seen before.

so i started designing spacecraft personifications with a historical twist
(galileo, wmap and jwst respectively)
mainly because i am a historical fashion bitch and mainly because the duchy of nasa is a hilarious concept
lowdown for each of them:
- galileo: retired mathematician from court of nasa, does hunting in his free time
- wmap: former miniature painter/metalworker, moved on to doing portraiture and shooting the shit with other older people
- jwst: currently employed at the court of nasa as painter for an ungodly sum of money
having ideas for new horizons being a mystic nun who sees new planets in her visions and observes the stars from her cell but haven’t designed that yet
Minotaur I/II rockets peel themselves like bananas during launch and if that ain't the most whimsical shit
the reason they do this is because the first stage is based on the Minuteman missile, which was designed to launch from a climate controlled missile silo. when your launch pad is out in the open in the hot, humid Virginia air, the rocket can actually get damaged by heat and condensation.
the people developing it into an orbital launch vehicle wanted to change as little as possible from the original missile to lower production costs, so instead of changing the structure of the booster or whatever, they just wrapped it in an insulating blanket. to save weight, the blanket gets peeled off by cables during launch. it's actually quite a clever solution!
they did not have to make that shit banana yellow though that ones definitely on purpose. looney tunes ass rocket.
